Skipping a Grade

My son is in second grade, and he is advanced in math and reading at a 5th grade level. We are having conversations with his teacher and principal about moving him to third grade. I'm fairly opposed to this because I think it can be tough socially. Do you have any experiences or advice?

Am I Asking Too Much from My Daughter's Grades??

Hello. My daughter is 12 and going into 7th grade(she has a late birthday, but going from private to public school they couldnt hold her back). Her grades are mostly A's with 2 or 3 B's. When her grades drop from A's to B's I confront her. Yes, I admit to yelling and scolding sometimes. She isn't that fragile, a very strong child when it comes to emotions, but most of the time she says I'm "so hard on her about one B" that she cries and locks herself in her room. Am I being to hard on her about her grades? I know she can do better, she used...

Afterschool Activities Overwhelming

I have three kids ages 6,4 and 1. Right now my 4 and 6 year old each do an activity one night during the school week, and we are usually out a third night for example for doctor appt or such. My husband travels and can't help out. I feel really overwhelmed trying to complete homework, get them out the door, go through a drive through, eat late etc. Next year, I'd like to have no activities during the school week and push them to the weekend when my husband can help. Does this sound possible?? Everyone I talk to says "good luck with that". ...

Seeking Recommendation for Afterschool Program near West Plano

I'm looking for a new afterschool program for my daughter who is in Kinder. We live in the Plano and attend Rose Mary Haggar. I was wondering if anyone has recommendation for a good afterschool program. Also if you are currently using one that you like please do share. The one we are currently using picks my daughter up late and the ratio of teacher student is just out of control in my opinion. I would like to find a place that is reliable and the ratio is somewhat decent. I would like to find an warm and inviting enviroment where its...

Is Your Kid a Bully?

It seems like everyone thinks there kid(s) are not bullies. I know we'd all like to believe we all have raised children that would never bully another child. But, logically, clearly, some people have. Someone HAS to be the bully. How do you know for sure if your child is or is not a bully? Can we ever be sure? Catwalk--I think that qualifies him for "hero", not "bully"! And I think we all know that "assertive" does not equal "bully".

Need New Infant Seat

Hello, I am writing because our current infant seat is too old, it is now seven years old now. It is still in great condition, but when our 2yr old was born the nurses were concerned that it had only one position for the straps. (I have also heard that you shouldn't use any car seat older than 5yrs.)It's part of an Evenflo stroller set and we would love to get one that would "snap" on to the stroller we have if possible. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was also wondering what to do with the old one. Do we just throw it away? ...

Having Friends Over?

So basically my question is this: Will we ever get to a point where I feel comfortable having my children's friends over? A little background: I am a SAHM to five children. My SO and I met just over 4 years ago. I already had a son (now6) he had three girls (now 5,8,9), together we had one girl (now 3). Well, now four of the five are in elementary school and have lots of friends. I'm wondering how many other families just don't really do the friend thing. Part of my problem is our house is never company ready, as you can imagine...

Who Pays for College...?

Are we as parents obligated/responsible for paying for our kids college? In a perfect world we would all have started a college fund when they were babies and at college age it would be enough to put any of them through the school of their choice.... but I digress. Let's put anyone's financial stability aside for now. I don't think it is our obligation to pay for college, should we help if we can sure, will some loans be incurred, sure. But as far as a yes/no answer, I say no. What say you... My son DOES have scholarships already to...

Seeking a GOOD Elementary School!

Hello, Does anyone have any insight on any of the Elementary Schools in the Plano area? My son will be starting K for the 2009-2010 school year - yes I know it's a little early but it's my baby and of you course you know what it's like to want the best:) According to the PISD website, he should go to Rasor. Any input on that school. It's a little out of the way for us. Thanks! J.

1St Grade Field Trip. Am I CRAZY?

ok so my 6 year old brings home a field trip permission slip for the Milwaukee Zoo. I looked at it like... what?! First of all, that is in another state and over an hour away... which already has me giving it a big "no thanks". I immediately wasn't comfortable with the distance of the bus ride. I just don't think a large group of 6 year olds need to be that far away in such a huge place without their parents. My daughter wasn't really wanting to go if I couldn't go as a chaperone, which I cannot really do because I have a 6 month old...

High School Daughter

My daughter is a high school freshman. She started out loving school, but i noticed she is not as enthusiastic lately due to the fact that some boys make fun of her weight and ask her things like when is she expecting and how many necks do you have. They are really cruel and I know it hurts her feelings. Sometimes she doesn't know how to respond...We have called the principal and she submitted a report of the name calling. I still sometimes don't know what to tell her...I faced similar situations in school. Sometimes I want to just put...

What to Do About the Homework?

I may have posted on here about this issue before but now I think my kids are getting too much homework. I don't want to be the only mom in my sons' 1st grade and pre-school class complaining about homework. It seems no one else is and most of the moms I talk with are happy with the homework situation. A few who have complained in the past have been sort of branded as a lazy mom who does not care about their child's education and why in the world would anyone object to homework. Maybe some of the moms don't work fulltime outside the...

Middle Child - Middle School Syndrome

I have 3 wonderful children, but I am affraid that my middle child is falling behind. She use to be a VERY bright student, but since she hit her teens...she seems to care less and less about her grades in school. This is her last year of middle school and she may be failing. I don't know what is happening. I am affraid she feels neglected because she is a middle child and may need more attention then I have been able to give. I am affraid that she has fallen into peer pressure from her friends and has decided that school is not...

Online School / Home School Advice

Hi, I live in Oregon and have a 4.5 and 3.5 year old, and we are having our 3rd baby this November. Right now I am working full time so my kids go to preschool/daycare, but I'm interested in home schooling my children. Do any of you have experience with home school or online school - for multiple young children? I have found this site: www.k12.com that offers a free online school. I've also looked at www.connectionsacademy.com/home.aspx. Have any of you used either of these programs? Or any other programs that you would recommend? Thank...

Enrolling for Public School

Hi Moms! I'm wondering how I can find out when enrollment takes place for our local public school. My son is going to be five in June and will therefore be on target to start Kindergarden in Fall. He currently attends a private Pre-K, but we plan to move him to our local public school at the appropriate time. How do I know when and where to enroll him? Where does one go for this information? It may very well be something easily found, but seeing as I'm due for a family addition in April, I want to be sure I plan ahead! Thanks in...

I guess my question is am I setting an antisocial example for them? I have moved 3 times in the past 9 years, all different states. But now that my daughter is in school I feel a little awkward about not having a social circle.
