If you're just going to the ceremony in the day time either is fine - wear a light cheerful color on top to brighten the black or gray bottom and you'll be fine!
My husband and I are attending a wedding tomorrow where we are going to the ceremony at noon but are not staying for the reception. The wedding will be indoors at an upscale restaurant in a local coastal town. We will not be staying long or working the room and do not want to stand out in any way, just blend in. I typically wear a dress to a wedding, but my dresses that currently fit are all for summer (and at 60 degrees in September that would be out of season) or more suited to an evening event (colors like red or black, dressy fabrics and designs). So that leaves me with skirts or pants.
Option a) charcoal gray pencil skirt with matching gray sheer tights and gray/black pumps, a dressy top (I have a bunch of shells in different colors) and either a black or pink cardigan.
Option b) same top combination (dressy shell with cardigan) and black or gray dress pants with pumps.
Is either option above too casual? What would you wear? I'm thinking that I'll go with the pink (it's a fall pink, not a spring one) sweater so that I don't look like I'm going to a funeral in all black and gray, right? Or should I go suck it up and buy a dress?
Thanks for your input!
Thanks everyone - gray skirt and pink sweater it is! Phew! I really didn't want to have to go shopping tonight...

I would wear the option A with the fall pink sweater. Sounds pretty! And no dont go out buying a whole new outfit for a wedding that you aren't staying long at, dont plan to socialize much, and aren't even going to the reception.
Stick with what you got, I'm sure you will look great! :)
What you suggest sounds fine to me. This is in a restaurant, not a church, and it sounds less formal because of that setting. I take it that your concern is that a cardigan to top everything might be too casual? I think it's fine if the cardigan is a feminine, pretty, dressy one and not worn.
I think a classy skirt and dress blouse are just as dressy as a dress. And this is daytime to boot, so a skirt and top are fine. I bet others will be there in workplace clothes like work suits or skirts so you'll be fine.
Option A sounds perfect :)
I would go with option A and wear more of a nude type hose instead of the grey tights.
I'd go with the skirt option. It feels more dressed up to me but not necessarily fancy
Either sone sounds good but I'm kind of partial to the pink....
Have a great time
May I mention one other option? If you have a jacket that pairs with the pants, that's a good option too. Otherwise, I like the idea of your wear the pencil skirt, blouse, and sweater!
Wear option A. It's an afternoon function so you should be fine. Find a nice color top and sweater and have a great time.
