Potty Trained 3.5 Year Old Having Many Accidents

My son has been potty trained since last July. Within the last 2-3 weeks, he has been having numerous accidents. He stood in front of his daycare provider and urinated on himself. He will answer that he does not need to go, then 2 minutes later he's wet. Or, he's holding himself jumping around and hollaring that he has to go. He has also been pooping in his underwear. Its gross! I don't understand it - there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when he does it. When asked, he says he waits too long. Any ideas ladies? How do I get him to go earlier? Both myself and my daycare provider (very understanding at home daycare) are stumped!

What can I do next?

Does he have constipation issues? My daughter was 5 and still had accidents. She also had constipation. When I took her to the dr the xray showed her bowels were pressing on her baldder so when she felt the need to go she couldn't hold it. Just a thought.

We had this issue. It could be multiple things. If he is truly waiting too long, maybe the daycare provider could remind him. But if she has to remind him, he has to go no questions. Or they could go on a regular schedule instead of waiting until he says he has to go. They just don't want to take the time to go. We also found my son was having accidents for the attention. Lots of positive reinforcement when he does go and when he stays dry.

You should definitly check with your Doctor. Our 5 year old started having a similar problem out of the blue also, and had been having no accidents previously for a long time. Like the poster below it was a constipation issue and he literally couldn't control/feel when he needed to go. Some over the counter medication and a set schedule of trying to go during the day for several months was the outcome. Best of luck.

See if you can think of anything that might have happened in the past few weeks that might have changed how he views going to the potty. My little brother developed a "fear" of going poop in the toilet when he was 4 because the toilet stopped up and overflowed once when he used too much toilet paper. Or maybe it could be he gets a lot of "attention" when he goes in his pants. Sometimes children will look at a negative reaction and scolding as "attention" if they feel ignored. Talk to your day care provider about anything she might have noticed. And of course, be patient...sometimes children go through things that just take time to work out.

You could try giving him a watch or a timer that's set for every 2 hours. It's a new "toy" that reminds him to go all by himself. If there is any defiance wrapped in there of not wanting to cooperate with the adult who reminds him, this gets around that issue. PT is a LONG process. Regression is common, so I've read. Have there been any major changes at home or at daycare? That could be a cause, too. Good luck!

Is he on allergy medicine? My son who is 3 had a few accidents at night when we first started him on allergy medicine (large dose) a few weeks ago. He also seems to be trying to hold it a bit longer during the day so that he just makes it to the potty or sometimes gets just a bit in his underpants.
