You girls know how important manners are so I want to make sure I'm being polite here. This weekend we have 5 Christmas parties to go to over 4 days. (We're getting them all done this weekend!) Would it be OK before we head off to these parties to eat a small salad, some fruit or yogurt? I'm trying to stay healthy this year and not act as the "clean up crew" for the food at the end of the night. Is this OK to do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the overwhelming response! I hadn't thought about buffet versus sit down...but luckily all of these are buffett style! In fact, during two of them, I could just grab some wassail or water and mingle, without getting near the table! Thanks again Mamas!

IF you are strong enough to do that then it's fine!! I am not...I suck. I eat a small meal before I go....I am full....then I get to the party and there I am noshing on everything in sight!!! For me, it's so not worth it...but then, I really like to eat!

I would advise everyone to always eat before going to a feast, otherwise you end up bloated and miserable. It's much nicer to have a small plate of food, eat it slowly while everyone else is going for seconds. You will feel trim and awake and watch everyone else start belching, tooting and dropping like flies :)

Of course! No one will know you ate something before arriving if you don't tell them. Remember the beginning of "Gone With the Wind"? Mammy scolds Scarlett into eating a tray of food before the BBQ so, "You won't be so hungry you eat like a field hand!" Ladies have used this trick for quite some time to appear more "dainty." These days we're (luckily) not so conditioned to only eat a few bites, but it is helpful for the waist line not to be the clean-up crew! Have fun!

Of COURSE it's okay to eat (even a very full meal) before going to a party. The only party I don't eat before is Thanksgiving. It just means you nibble and nosh at the party. Even dinner parties, I eat beforehand at least a bit, so I'm not stuffing myself like a glutton in someone else's home.

I don't TELL people "Sorry, I already ate"... I just eat a great deal less than I otw would have.

I always try to eat a bite of something beforehand. Especially if you don't know what is being served there. If these are "parties" I doubt there is a sit down meal planned. You'd be smart to eat a little protein before you head out to nibble/sip the evening away.

This is what is typically recommend every single year when I read articles about holiday parties and food. It is always mentioned to eat lightly before attending so you don't go crazy on all the goodies and junk that surrounds us at the holiday time.

Of course...it isn't like you are going to go in and ANNOUNCE that you ate before you came to the party...they can just think you are a person with a small appetite!! I personally think it is a GREAT idea...I always shudder when going to holiday parties...the food is SO good and SO fattening and unhealthy!!!
Don't worry about it...congratulate yourself for being smart and thinking ahead!!
Merry Christmas!!!

Of course. You are just being smart (and polite)

We NEVER go to a party at someone's home, etc hungry. Just a handful of almonds or something like that and water works wonders.

Honestly, if someone is watching to see how much you ate, they have TOO much time on their hands.

I'd also take a small hostess gift.

I don't think there's anything impolite about it. What *would* be impolite would be to talk at the party about what you've done. You want to eat just enough to please your hostess; if it's a buffet you can seriously pick and choose, and if it's a sit-down meal you'll have to pick and choose a little more discreetly. If your tummy is full before you arrive, so much the easier. Happy partying!

Of course!!

I think it's more important to attend if you RSVP, bring a little something for the hostess and be a gracious guest. I sincerely doubt anyone will be counting how many hor'dourves (sp?) you've eaten! lol Have fun :o)

I think that is a terrific idea and you should definitely do that! I don't think that it is rude at all to take care of yourself. I'm sure the hostess may even appreciate having a few left overs for themselves so that the next day, they don't have to worry about what to make for lunch/dinner.
