How Do We Explain Putting Our Dog to Sleep?

We have an elderly dog that we know within the next few months will likely have to put to sleep. How do we hande this situation with our 2 1/2 year old son? We also have a 14 month old who I don't think will notice one way or the other, but our 2 1/2 year old is definitely old enough now to realize when his doggy is gone. My Dog Is Dying.

Took my 7 year old german shepherd to the vet last week because she has been acting different and stopped eating. Found out she has lymphoma, and has to be put down. We scheduled the appointment for this upcoming Wednesday. I cry several times a day. I really can't break down though, I have three kids and am 6 months pregnant with my fourth. Son Knocks over Dog's Waterbowl

Anyone with suggestions on how to keep my 11 month old son from tipping over the dog's water bowl while still giving access to the dog??? It is driving me crazy - he gets all wet and cries and makes a huge mess. If I put it in a place where he can't get to it, then the poor, little, 11 year old dog can't drink her her water. I have tried to move it in another area int he laundry room so it is not in his path and out of plain sight, but he still finds it. He does not trip on it, more like play with it which includes dumping the water out....
