So What Happened?

1growingupfast : I totally agree with you. The whole thing it outrageous. Ok, lets say this is for education purposes only. Why would it need to be passed into law? So basically they are saying that you MUST put in this information about single parenting being a contributing factor to child abuse? In government leaflets? I am certainly not a lawyer, but if something like this passes, could it not potentianally open the door for single parents to be prosecuted for simply being single parents?

Look at it this way. You are married, you have children. Your husband suddenly becomes verbally abusive, you leave him hoping to keep you children away from that sort of behavior. The divorce is he said she said, nothing you have hard proof of. You retain custody of your kids. Now lets say your ex husband remarries, while you remain single. Could this law now be used to determine that HE is now the more fit parent because he is no longer a SINGLE father? Well statistics do show...

Republicans want a (politically) low cost way of endorsing 'family values'. Pretty ridiculous and I am thinking they guessed wrong on this one (and the contraception debate and the state endorsed vaginal penetration by ultraound bills). They seem pretty tone deaf this election season.

How stupid! Doesn't matter why a parent is a single parent. I don't think that face in anyway makes them a neglectful parent. Not even going to elaborate because I can't say nice things about hte person who proposed this.

This is where the "religious right" coddling by the GOP has lost them many votes -but then there are the nutjobs like this guy and all the folks who elect him and vote for people like Santorum. People need to realize -there's a faction of the "religious right" out there that does NOT want YOU as a woman to have ANY sexual freedom -period! That's what it all comes down to -a return to the thinking of pre-60s western thought where, if you got "knocked up" outside of marriage, you were supposed to be ashamed and go away to visit some aunt for 9 months until you could give the baby up for adoption. It didn't matter if you were raped (you were probably asking for it anyway) -have the baby and give it up for adoption and be ashamed. If you died from a back-alley abortion -you basically deserved it. They still think that "good girls" shouldn't be having sex. See -abortion isn't an issue if you don't even have sex or you get married to a guy you don't even love because he gets you preggo senior year.

No -I'm not a big fan of single people of either gender breeding like it's no biggie and not caring for their kids, but that's certainly not all single moms -and as some have already mentioned, sometimes it's definitely in the best interest of the kids AND mom for a divorce to happen. Nope -you shouldn't be using birth control and you shouldn't be having sex outside of marriage -that's what they want. A male-dominated society where females are FORCED to be slaves to reproduction -like it or not -or else completely deny their sexual desires. We did NOT come a long way baby to be shoved back down by morons such as this! Politicians who put forth BS like this should be laughed out of office.

I'm responding a little late, so I have no idea what the question was. I just wanted to respond to the comments that were made about the religious right not wanting women to have any sexual freedom. That is absolutely ludicrous!! No woman is being denied access to birth control, although that is the way some on the left are spinning this issue. The whole issue is about forcing religious institutions to PAY for it when it goes against their beliefs. It's completely unconstitional besides! It intereferes with freedom of religion. If having your birth control paid for is important to you, don't work for a religious institution for goodness sakes!! Like the girl from Georgetown...she wants a JESUIT school topay for her bc?! I find it hard to believe that it's causing her that much financial hardship anyway seeing as she can just go to Planned Parenthood and get what she needs. No one is trying to prevent her from having sex- why the hell should they be responsible for providing her w/ free contraception? What ever happened to personal responsibility anyway. When did we get to the point where we expect someone else to pay for our birth control?

I haven't heard anything about this but I was raised by a single mama who did a great job! She is still single and a super involved grandma :D I really don't know and can't imagine where this law is coming from or what it is trying to do, but at face value I think it's nuts.
**edit**thanks Marda P, you did give some real insight on how something like this even comes up, it was helpful!

Until they quit making funds available every time some kid wants to blow the parental home and "make it", this problem will still be there -- the money is made too easy for them, esp if they are single!
