What to Expect After Having Mirena Removed

Hey moms, I have had several questions about Mirena and I have decided I'm going to check in to getting it removed. I was planning on having it removed within the next 6 months to a year anyway, and if it could be the cause of some of my problems, may as well get it out of there :) I was wondering what to expect after having it removed? My biggest question is: will I bleed for several weeks like I did when I had it in? I am a teacher, and if I'm going to have really heavy bleeding it may be better to wait until Spring Break to have it removed. I read that you need to be on your period to have it removed....I remember my dr. gave me some pills to take that started my period when I had it inserted...maybe she will do the same? I never know when I will be on my period with this thing, and it is usually just really light spotting for about two or three days so that may be kind of tricky if I have to wait to be on my period. Anything else I should no? Oh! About how much does it cost to have removed? I have read that some insurance providers won't pay to have it removed. TIA!

What can I do next?

I cramped a little bit for a day or so, and the removal postponed my next period, but that was it. I hated having mine, so as soon as I got it out, my periods shortened, my acne cleared up, and I lost weight. It was like a brand new me! :)

it should not cost anything since it is birth control but i would call your insurance and ask them about it to be sure

My insurance covered it getting removed. I didn't have to wait for my period to get it out. Afterwards I bleed and cramped a little for about two days afterwards. I just got it out in Jan. and still haven't gotten a period.

I had mine removed while I was on my period. I had no cramping or bleeding and was pregnant two months later. Insurance covered the removal.

When I had mine removed I was not on my period, I don't know why that would matter since many ppl stop their period once they have it put in. I had no problems, just a little cramping that day. About a month later I got my normal period and went right back into my normal schedule. My insurance covered the removal of mine so I have no idea the cost of it. Good Luck!

I have never heard of this "on your period" business with the mirena either. I was not on it when I had it put in (twice) or removed (once), so I don't think that will be a big issue. I had a little bit of wacky bleeding the first month or so, but then I got pregnant, so I guess I can't attest as to whether or not it cleared up, but it wasn't particularly heavy. It didn't really hurt or anything, I think I had a bit of cramping, but nothing major. I cna't remember how much I paid, but I did pay something and I think it was over or about $100. My insurance only covered part of it.

I also wanted to say that if you call your dr.'s office and ask them to call your insurance company they will...and then they can tell you exactly how much your portion will be so you'll know in advance.
