Love the paragard. One-two days/month of rediculously heavy periods, but no real cramps either. Never have to think about birth control, and hormone free. Totally recommend it.

Funny, I just responded to another IUD question about the Mirena. I've tried both types, this one first because I wanted something that was hormone free. I didn't like it as much for me, but I think everyone is different. My major issue was that my periods were heavier and I had constant spotting and the cramping was MISERABLE. For me, worse than childbirth (I had this priormy daughter so I had nothing to compare it to). Although when I was in labor, I was like, is this all? So maybe it had it's upside :-)

Oh yeah and getting the IUD inserted was pretty brutal. Definitely take some Ibuprofen about 40 minutes prior.

Hi K.,

I had my Paragard placed in August, and I love it. I was afraid to get it because I'd heard all the horror stories about heavy periods, and cramps, blah blah blah....Well, so far, I've had 2 periods since I had it placed, and I can honestly say that they haven't been too bad. One day of spotting, 2 days of moderately heavy bleeding, then one day of spotting. 4 days on my period is a small price to pay for the protection that I have against pregnancy. I haven't really had any cramping, either. Just the day I start my period, is all. I totally recommend it. The one thing I didn't anticipate was how painful it was to have it put in, though. It felt like really bad cramps, though it was over quickly. Good luck.

Definitely works, but I had horrible periods with it. Longer periods, severe cramping, and horrible PMS. They say you can get pregnant immediately after having it removed, but it took me 9 months and I have never had issues getting pregnant prior to that.
My sister has the 5yr Mirena IUD and has had zero complaints with it. I will go with that option next time.
