Anybody Have Experience with the IUD Mirena?

I used it bet ween pregnancies and loved it. My mom used it until she went through The Change and loved it (she used the 10 yr one, I used the 5 yr).

I see a post about Mirena about once a week, so you might take a look at past inquiries too. I've read that people either love it or hate it.

I'd use it again, but for me, now... Hubby had a vasectomy. =)

I've had a great experience with mirena. I had it put in in Dec. It was a little uncomfortable, not terrible. I was a little crampy that day, but that was it. No problems since.

I got my IUD two years ago and I LOVE it!! There was a little discomfort when the Dr was putting it in, but after that nothing. I don't have periods anymore, I get a little spotting every once in a while. It is very reliable and cheaper than pills. They are good for 5 years, I definately recommend getting one!

My husband has had a vasectomy, so my motivation in getting the Mirena was purely to make my periods lighter. Mine were so heavy that I was practically unable to leave the house on some days! Since having it inserted, they've lightened up a lot. However, it's gone from a sprint to a marathon. Whereas before, my periods were seven days, five of which were heavy bleeding, they're now about two weeks. And, they're a little unpredictable. They say that Mirena makes your periods stop altogether, but mine still have not, and I got it inserted in July. I don't mind, though, as long as they're manageable.
As for the insertion experience, like one mom said, it was uncomfortable, but not unlike a regular pap. Slight cramping the first day or so, but nothing major.
I'm really happy I did it.

I really advise you to do LOTS of research. I wished I had. I had it in for 10 months ( I had used several types of BCPs during the prior 20 years and had relatively little to no problems with any of them). During the 10 months I had the IUD I experienced the following symptoms: gained 10lbs, no sex drive, cramping in abdomen and lower back, headaches, lack of concentration, mild depression, oily hair, and itching breasts. I started doing research online and found that a lot of women were experiencing the same side effects. I had it removed almost 6 months ago and since then I have lost most of the weight I gained and all the other symptoms I experienced went away after 2-3 months.

I am on my second one, love it! I have had no side affects with it, and I also only have slight spotting instead of a period now. (bonus!) I cramped for about one hour from time of insertion, but other than that, no pain. My first one was placed incorrectly, so my husband felt it during intercourse, but the second one has had no problems. I feel one hundered percent safe with this (it is the only BC I can use)and I have had no problems, I wish you well in this matter.

I had one put in September. I can not do any hormonal birth control, and other methods were inconvenient and we wanted to try something else. I was very concerned because Mirena does have a small level of hormones, but I was very pleased with the results. I did have some spotting for quite some time (3 or 4 weeks) with some intermittent spotting after that, and I continued to have some periods but they were every 6-8 weeks instead of 4 and were very light. Unfortunately, mine began to fall out and I had to have it removed in Feb. However, I was so pleased with the IUD experience I had the paragard put in this past month and am giving it one more try. Odds of falling out or failure are very unlikely, although not impossible. I would definitely recommend Mirena to others.

I've had a Mirena for a little over a year. The procedure was a little uncomfortable, but not very painful. For me, it was like getting a pap smear. Only side effect has been ocassional spotting (about six times in a year and very little). It is great not to think about it and not having a regular period is a real perk.

I also got since May, and the same day got it inserted got really bad cramps, but that was about it. About the light periods, I also get them for 2 weeks, but I'm only spotting, which is not bad but, have not got rid of them completely. Although, my OBG told me that once you have it for a year, they will be gone completely.. I wonder ;)
Anyway, i really like it. At least is a peace of mind...

I had the Mirena placed in July of 2008 after my 2nd child was born. I experienced no pain at the appointment, although I have heard that most women feel a pinch when it is being inserted. I had spotting for a while (approx. 4 months) but it has been well worth it. My periods have dwindled and I have had no worries about it at all. I love it and am very glad I had it placed. I was also encouraged when I found out that my Ob/Gyn and her nurses all it too. That's a pretty good recommendation! Best of luck to you!

I got Paragaard because it was non hormonal and not near the side effects Mirena has. It is also an IUD. I also chose this because I had blood clots in the past so no pills for me and I heard since Mirena emits hormones- watch your weight gain.

Insertion wasn't painful for me at all. I haven't had any negative side effect. I had a little spotting the first 2 months or so and then NO PERIOD AT ALL for the last 3 1/2 years. LOVE IT!!!

I just posted a couple of days ago, but I just got pregant on Mirena! I now the chances are slim (1 in a 1000 in the first year), but I got pregant and my IUD was intact as it should have been! I have many friends with the Mirena IUD and I have really not heard any horror stories. After concieving though, I wish I would have just taken the pill. At least on the pill if I got pregant the risk to the baby would be much lower. I had to have the IUD taken out last Friday and removal increases the miscarriage rate to about 50%. Leaving it in was not an option as it increased my miscarriage rate to over 60% in the second trimester. No birth control is 100% but I would not get the Mirena IUD again! Please ask your doctor lots of questions about what happens if you concieve while using the IUD because it really has been heartwrenching. We are now holding our breath hoping our little baby survives the next few weeks! Good Luck!

i am actually getting this done tomorrow... so I'm wondering the same BUT my friend had it done last week and she took one of her vicodin's from her c-section and said that the insertion didn't hurt at all, just some cramps afterwards. I may do the same. I have read up on it too so I'm sure I "know" what you know... if I find anythiing else out I'll let you know. We'll see if God calls us to more kids... for now... our one little 2 month old is enough! God bless!!

I got it 6 weeks after having my baby, my sister in law did as well. Neither of us have had any adverse side effects. My doctor says that most women done have periods while they have it which i have not, but i am still breast feeding. My SIL has been getting hers but i believe they are a lot lighter.
I think the procedure is pretty expensive. You have an appointment to place it, another to check it a few weeks later, then another three months later for a sonogram to make sure it is in the right pace. You also pay for the removal when it is placed (at least that is how mine worked), but my insurance covered it all because like i said I had just had a baby and met my deductible for the year.
It is very nice not having to worry about a pill or anything. Oh and by the way there will be a little string that is in the vagina that feels like fishing line. My doctor said not to tell my husband about it, because as soon as you do he will think he can feel it during intercourse. She said wait and if he says something about it tell her and she can trim it shorter but that if you tell him before hand he will definitely think he can feel it :)

Hey there. I have had mine in for about a year. It is great! The procedure hurt a little for a minute. My periods were weird for a few months, but even then, all I needed was a panty liner. I love mine. I have nothing but positive feedback.

I have had my Mirena for 4 years and LOVE it. I haven't had a period in 3 yrs, and have NO side effects. The insertion to me was like a bad period cramp, and I had light cramps for a few hours. The first few months my bleeding was sporatic, although light, then my periods stopped. It will expire next year, and I will for sure get another one.

I had the Mirena put in about two months ago. Procedure was uncomfortable, but not hugely painful. Side effects for me included more cramping at my usual time of the month, some weight gain (or that could just be me), and less of a heavy period, but lasted longer. So far pretty reliable!

I had it 6 weeks after my son was born, and removed last Nov. so we could try for #2. I loved it! I could barely feel it when it was inserted (like mild menstral cramps). I never had a period while I had Mirena, just very light spotting off/on for about 5 weeks after it was inserted. It took 2 months for me to get a period after having it removed (which I couldn't even feel it when she took it out). I will definitely get it again after our next baby!

I'm currently using Mirena. I've had it for about 7 months now and I love it! the procedure wasn't painfull at all. You'll just feel a slight pinch when your doctor is placing it. I haven't experienced any side effects. This is a great choice if your not trying to have any children anytime soon.

Had mine for almost 2 yrs now.Love it!!!I had a small amout of cramping when it was inserted but not bad at all.After having a baby nothing hurts ne more.LOL!!Anyway i have had no problems at all.My periods are lighter.The one thing I will say is make sure wheter or not your insurance will cover it.mine didnt (blue cros blue shield)and it cost a little ove $700.But it last for five years.

Mirena was wonderful, never any scares. ever. the procedure was a little more painful than a pap smear. the only thing that was ultra inconvenient-for me- was that it made my period last two weeks and then gross spotting afterwards. but i haven't heard that from anyone else. good luck

I HATE MIRENA. Had it for nine months, suffered after the first two weeks. Had no sex because it was physically painful to the point of vomiting. Google mirena side effects or Mirena adverse reactions.

On the plus side - I didn't get pregnant. Not having sex would have worked without the 800 implant.

i didn't have a very good experience with mirena. I bleed pretty solid for three months and then it fell out. I know it's not supposed to do that and the odds are pretty low. I did not get another one put it.

I have an IUD, but not the Mirena. I had the copper one put in that last up to 10 years. Like everyone else said, it is a little uncomfortable when putting in, but the procedure is just like having a pap smear.

With the copper one, I haven't gained any additional weight from the IUD, and my periods have been shorter in length, but heavier in the few days I do have them. I have not had any spotting with this IUD, and still have them around the same time each month.

Basically, once they put it in, you never know that you have it.

I got the mirena almost 3 years ago and I love it.The procedure hurt alittle while the dr inserted it in but no pain after wards.It has stopped my periods, I spot a couple of days maybe every 6 months or so.I do still cramp sometimes during my time to have a period,but no side effects from the mirena.
