What Birth Control Do You Suggest? Anyone Used Mirena?

I've got two healthy children that I adore. We wanted a third, but after 3 years of trying & no more diapers needed, we are done. I'm 34, and not sure if we are forever done, so my husband is not ready to be "fixed". I've just started a 2 year program at college and need to finish that before I consider having another baby. I tried YAZ for a while but it made me moody & sick. I've heard that IUD's can be uncomfortable. I was thinking of the Mirena, does anyone use that? Tell me what your experiences with birth control have been. Does it just take a while to get used to? With the side effects being heart attack & stroke I'm nervous about taking them. If I'm too moody I won't need the birth control, cause I won't be.... ya know. LOL! Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your help! I decided to go with the mirena. I got it last week and so far things are going good. I like the fact that it is good for 5 years, but can be taken out before then. You all gave me much more information than the mirena web site. It means a lot to hear it from real women who had the experiences personally. Thanks again for your support!

I used Mirena and had to have it taken out. It caused me to have worse depression problems than I already had. That has been true of any birth control that I have taken, though. The nice thing is that you can try it and if it doesn't work, you can easily take it out.

I use mirena, and I love it. I've been on and off birth control pills since I was 12 for health reasons and I got really sick of taking pills everyday. After I had my daughter, I had the mirena put in because then I wouldn't have to worry about birth control for 5 years. The one thing I don't like about it is that I have only had 2 periods since it was put in, and it's been 17 months. It's pretty good though, and you don't have to worry about forgetting a pill.

I have a IUD called Paragard www.paragard.com and it is the kind without horomones and you can keep it up to ten years. I have had no problems with it except my cycle is a little heavier than usual. When it was first inserted I experienced really bad cramps for the first day or so and after that it has been smooth sailing.

I have a Mirena in and I have had no problems. It did hurt going in and I bleed for a few days like a really light period with slight cramps and that was it. I now have one day periods each month and it is great. I did have to go in and get my stings trimmed because they were poking my husband, but now all is well. Good luck.

YAZ made me very sick as well. My doc changed it to Desogen. Said it is very low dose and very effective. I have been taking it for a week now, so far so good. I know what you mean by "We are done". I thought I was going to have about 5 or 6, but after having twins, WE ARE DONE!!!

I use the depo shot, and love it. The only bad thing about that is it makes it hard to lose weight. I have also had friends who have gained weight with this. They also say that it can take a year or more after you stop getting it to get preg. again. Hope this helps!!!

Hello,

I have a 15 month old and a 3 month old. I decided to use Mirena, because I didn't want to think about taking oral birth control. I could still use Mirena even though I am breastfeeding. I have had for about 2 months and am really happy that I choose Mirena. I had very little cramping the day I got it. The big question for me was is if my insurance was going to cover it. My insurance covered it and I love that it lasts for 5 years. I was comforted that it only cost me $25 and if I didn't like the way I felt having it then they could easily remove it.

I've had Mirena for just over a year now. I can't tell it's there. It's totally fool-proof! I've had about four very light periods (lasting a day or two) since I've gotten it. I would recommend Mirena to anyone! BEST BC EVER!!!

Hi A.,

I have the Mirena and love it!!! I've had it for almost 2 years now and haven't had a period in a year. I spot here and there every once in awhile but nothing heavy or that lasts longer than 2 days. It's not uncomfortable, you don't even know it's there. They say it takes 3-6 months before your periods start to lighten or just disappear but it took about a year. I was to the point I had thought about having it removed and now I'm glad I didn't. I also read that there aren't as many side effects as the oral birth controls because the IUD's don't get into your blood stream like the pills. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I used the Mirena after my second child, at age 41. I loved it! No pain, no sensation of it being there at all from either of us. The best part was I had little or no periods!

Good luck!

I love Mirena! No more periods! I could not take birth control pills due to high blood pressuref and the iud was my chosen alternative. Due to nasty periods, my dr. recommended Mirena. I did cramp for about 2 days after insertion, but they told me to take ibuprofen right before the procedure (and I can't take ibuprofen), so if you can that will lessen it. At firt, as the lining of the uterus thins out I did bleed (not periods, just bleeding) for awhile, 6 months. Nothing too bad, it isn't like it was profuse. Worth it to not have periods for years to follow. I don't feel it at all. Make the choice that is right for you, Mirena is right for me. I'm older (40's), had my last child at 40, so I can't addres the issue of removal and getting pregnant again.

After more than 8 years of Depo(no period the whole time),I got the Mirena inserted almost 2 years ago(still no period). I cramped a lot for the first 2-4 days and since then I haven't felt it AT ALL. Despite the pain for the first few days,I'll probably get another when it's time.

I was on yasmin which I loved. periods regular and not long but still had bad cramping and heavy bleeding. Afeter my second baby I decided I wanted to wait a while and see if I wanted more so I decided on the Mirena. I loved it. You have to have it inserted while you are bleeding. It takes less than 5 minutes. I did cramp, I also cramped after but nothing unbearable. I also had some bleeding. I have had it in now for almost a year and my periods are hit or miss and if I do have 1 they are maybe 2 days and I am lucky if I need to wear anything. Hope this helps and good luck at school.

Hi A.,

I used Mirena and was one of the people it didn't work for. I bled for three months straight and I couldn't take it anymore. I have a friend though who is having no problems and highly recommends it. Good luck!

I just started using the Mirena after my youngest was a few months old and I HIGHLY recommend it. I was also very moody while on the pill and this doesn't affect my mood whatsoever. I also haven't had a period since it was put in (about 6 months ago), but did have spotting for the first couple of months (which is very common). You don't even know it is there and it doesn't cause weight gain the way some types of birth control can. A previous poster said that you have to have it put in while you are bleeding but I don't know where they got that idea - that's not how it was done with me. I am very happy with my choice!

I have had the Mirena since January and I love it! After two months, I stopped getting a period at all. I used to get heavy periods, so I was thrilled! When I had it put in, I had a little bit of period-like cramping for a couple of hours but that was it. I haven't had any discomfort or anything since.

I have had the Mirena for almost 3 years now (next month) and i love it. I did have breakthrough bleeding the first several months, my doctor said he gets a lot of complaints about that, but after the first several months, I didn't get a period. Now I get a drop of breakthrough bleeding once a year. Let me know if you have specific questions, my best friend just got her last week and so far she loves it too.

I have had the mirena for 3 years now. This is the second IUD that I've had in my life. I've honestly had great experiences with the copper IUD and the Mirena thus far. I only have a one day period of light spotting, which I love. I used to have extremely heavy, painful periods and those are now gone. I took a year to reach this stage but my periods did lighten almost immediately after getting the Mirena. It isn't painful. It only causes some light cramping after the first or second day after it's inserted. Now, I can't even tell there's anything there. I love it!!!
The depo made me gain a ton of weight and my doc says that most women gain up to 10 lbs. per year on the depo. I also bled constantly for 6 months straight on the depo shot. I've tried about ten different birth control pills and either got sick, broke out, or went half crazy on each and every one of them. I am just one of those people that can't take birth control. Try the mirena. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. My sister got it too and loves it. Good luck!
