Hi there
I am going camping soon and I am bringing my 12 month old and I am concerned with the mosquitos. I use Deet on myself but I don't think babies can use very much of anything with Deet. Does anyone know of any Very Effective Mosquito repellant?

What can I do next?

I don't use any deet on anyone in my family...I always use for myself whatever the kids use, feeling if less is good for them, it's good for me, too. (I buy sunscreen that's for babies or children, too, and use it on me!)

I buy whatever I can find that is deet-free, 100% deet-free. Sometimes we have to go to camping stores to find it. This year we bought at I Goldberg.

Also, to treat mosquito bites, I use something that is kid-safe. I was at Walgreens and the same brand company had something for kids and something for adults, I think called After Bug. I asked the pharmacist and he explained why I should only us ethe kid one on my kids...had I not seen the kid-oriented one, I would have bought the other!

Have a fun trip!

Erin,

I have the book- 1001 all natural secrets to pest control. it says "secret bug repellant" is anise oil. "fisherman and hunters swear by anise oil and those in the know will not go on a hunting or camping trip without it." "One of the best ways to use anise oil is to add a small amount to the clothes you are wearing on the camping trip. Place the oil into the wash cycle so that it mixes with the soap suds. This will place the oil into the clothing."

I've tried pepermint oil for spiders and IT WORKS!!!!! Its pure oil you buy at pharmacys and health food stores. I bet if you just put drops of oil all around your camp site/pinic area it would worrk. You can put it in a spray bottle with water & spray it too. Have fun!!!

I wouldn't use ANY bug repellant on a 12 mo baby. If anything--put something chemical free on the baby's clothes/blanket/etc.
Also, I've heard that dryer sheets repel mosquitos.

I mix tea tree oil, just a few drops in a spray bottle with water from the dollar store. It works as good as anything else, you can reapply as necessary and spray everything.

I hear a Bounce dryer sheet does the trick. Can you stick it in a back pocket or safety pin it to the back of babies clothes? Good luck, E.

We've used an organic one from Wal-Mart in a purple bottle. It smells awful but works great.

Also if you decide to use and essential oil of any kind you must know that you need to dilute it in a carrier oil first to make sure it doesn't hurt baby's skin. I make my own baby wipe spray (I use cloth diapers) and I used lavender oil. I used baby oil as the carrier.

Lavander is known as a mosquito repellent and so I've been using it for this too. So far the concentration seems to work for about 2 hours so I'm doing some research on strength as I don't want my boys to wreak of lavender or hurt their skin. Also, if you use an essential oil make sure it is 100% pure.

We have an all Essential Oil DEET FREE Mosquito repellant. It is by Naturally Northwoods called "Go Away Skeeter and Tick Spray". Deet is extremely carcinogenic. 56% gets through the skin and 17% actually gets into the bloodstream!! Just say No to DEET! It may seem harmless now but I guarantee you are only harming your little ones and yourself if you are spraying Deet to prevent mosquito bites. We live up in the Northwoods where Mosquitoes actually will carry you away and the All Essential Oil Skeeter Spray really works and it's great knowing you aren't harming your family or yourself!

California Baby makes a sun block + bug repellant. Light citronella scent. I've used it on my daughter since she was a little over 1 yr (now she's 28 months). She LOVES it, and so do I. (I use the Avon Skin So Soft on myself - NOT on my little one.)

I use the Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus. I like it because it smells better than the store brands and it is the only one I have found that works.
