Hi,
My question is this - is there a bug spray or repellent that is safe for a 2yr old? Preferably one that doesn't smell. My daughter will be playing outdoors in the evening and I would like to keep her from being bit by whatever may be outside....
Is there a sunscreen/bug repellent combo?

What can I do next?

I saw these really cool OFF repellent clip on fans on a commercial. I have never used them, but thought it was a good idea. I want to try them on my kids because they hate wearing repellent. Here is the link. It may not work for her if she will be running around too much. Just a thought.

I just wanted to let you know that I use this tip often. A mom at school that does daycare in her home told me about this. You need to get a feeder that you put on the end of your garden hose(like you would put miracle grow powdered fretilizer in that mixes with water from the hose and you spray on your grass or flowers, etc.) You then take the Original Green Palmolive Dish Soap, doesn't need to be ultra, the regular is fine. Pour the Original Palmolive into the garden hose feeder. Attach the garden hose and turn the water on. Spray the Original Palmolive over the grass or where you may be in the yard. CAUTION!!!! Grass will be VERY SLIPPERY while wet. It is surprising how well this works and it doesn't hurt the grass, etc. and it's not expensive. If it rains or you water the grass, then you will have to reapply the Palmolive. It doesn't get rid of all the bugs, but I would say about 85% - 90% of them. Hopefully you find this tip helpful.

I've always had good luck with using skin so sofy by Avon, and Avon's other bug repellant product. I also used one by Burt's Bee's that worked good - it was called Lemon See or Lemon Grass oil -- check their web site.

For such a young child, I highly recommend using an all-natural product from Whole Foods. They have bug repellents that work but don't have all the nasty chemicals you find in brands like Off. This is what I did with my daughter when she was younger and will continue to do even as she gets older.

Hi T S,

I see you have alot of advice but I didn't notice this one. I use mosquito wipes, they are like the wet ones wipes but with repellant in them. At places like, Walgreens, Target, Kmart etc.. sell them. This way when you spray it doesn't go into their eyes. I love them and they are safe because they have less than 10% deet. If you need any more info just let me know.

Take Care,
S.

We just discovered this thing called Thermacell. I works great! It is a little hand held thing that heats a pad and creates an odorless cloud that repells the bugs. It covers about a 15 foot radius. We got ours from Cabellas but I am pretty sure that you can get them at Walmart too.

Hi TS,
Not sure if you are aware of the Environmental Working Group website but they test products and decide how safe they are on a 0-10 scale. Thanks to this site I found and use Encoura Insect Repellent which scores a 1. The Encoura website is: http://www.encoura.com/. I have a blog called www.lesstoxicbeauty for more low toxic goodies as well, check it out, hopefully it will be helpful.

I have used Nutri Clean for years, safe enough to eat almost no smell at all. Made from Yucca, Aloe vera, coconut amids and amines. Applied full strength, not sticky and works quite well, safely. You are so right about not using chemicals on child as everything that touches skin must be used, stored or eliminated.

When the body has more toxins invading our bodies than can be eliminated - they store in the fatty tissue or walls of your colon. I practice prevention attempting to live as close to natural as possible. If you want some for free contact me at ____@____.com and I will mail some.

Dryer sheets are supposed to repel insects - you can stick them through your beltloops. I used to put them all over my little one's stroller when she was a baby and we were camping. Also, Avon makes a sunscreen/bug repellent combo by skin-so-soft that is safe for kids. Have fun playing outside!! :)

Hi T S,

I bought bug spray and sun screen through Mercola.com last year and I love them both. It is not a combo though...the bug spray uses all natural ingredients that repel mosquitos. Would it work in the deep woods? Probably not. There is nothing like DEET to keep those darned things away - but the bug spray through Mercola works quite well, smells like vanilla and citrus and has not caused any adverse effects to either me, my husband or my now three year old.

Best of luck,

A.

I think the important thing about bug repellent for a child is that it is deet free. There are two I use for my 9-month and 3 year old. One is All terrain Kids Herbal Armor, A deet-free lotion with a SPF 15. The other is deet - free Bull Frog spray that has a SPF 30.

Bull Frog is a sunscreen/bug repellant combo. I use the Off family, which is lick the off skintastic. USE IT. My daughter was just in the er last week from a mosquito bite that she scratched. With in and hour and a half of scratching it it was infected, her arm was swollen and had red blotches all over it. She was about an hour away from being hospitalized on IV antibiotic and having to have each red blotch lanced and a drain tube put in each. It has been scarry and the antibiotic for home is expensive, and really hard on them. I will ALWAYS use bug spray when she is outside now, I had tried to stay away from them because of the chemicals, but I will take my risk with the chemicals now.

Dear T S,

Burts Bees makes "Herbal Insect Repellent." It's deet free and smells pretty nice. You can find it at Target. They also make sunscreens. Good luck!
