14 Month Old and Insect Repellants

I have been battling mosquitos at my 2-year old daughter's daycare for weeks, as she seems to develop welts from the bites. My husband found a product made by Sawyer in the camping section at Walmart. It is the only repellant that seems to keep the bugs off of her. It is made for the family and comes in a small lotion-like bottle. It is applied like a lotion instead of a spray, and it is non-greasy. It is time released to provide good protection. I use the bullfrog it has the insect repellant and sunblock it just sprays on and it works great! it is deet free I have even used it on my husband and me and it worked its a little pricy but worth it

Always use a repellent with less than 10% DEEET. Anything more can be toxic to children. While some may react to high doses and others may not; you are safest staying with less than 10% DEET.

I have found the repellants that Avon sells are wonderful. You might need to apply frequently, but they work well for my daughter. There is no deet and they are a sunscreen as well.

unfortunately deet is the most powerful repellent, but not for babies! Also, i remember being at babies r us, i saw a bottle there for babies!

A Downy fabric softener sheet will work. Rub it over his exposed skin, very lightly and stick one in his pocket or through a beltloop. Use regular scent, not the flowery kind.

Personally we do not use anything toxic in our household. we use something from a company called melaleuca. the main product we use for insect repellant or bites is called melaleuca oil, its the purest form of tea tree oil. its totally safe and non-toxic. we use it on our dog too. and many other things. if you would like to know where to get this, please email me at ____@____.com

at times we use "skin so soft" from avon. this is the only other thing i trust.

all of the stuff w deet or anything like that from the store can cause neurological, behavioral, reproductive, and many other problems, even cancer.

good luck in making an informed decision. and like i said, the melaleuca oil is the best thing. a cheap tea tree oil can be highly toxic. so you can only trust the good stuff.

I would use Skin So Soft by Avon...It is safe and will not draw the mosquitos.

Skin so Soft from Avon. It is Deet free, totally safe for babies, and doesn't need to be washed off before bed. I highly recommend it.

I am an Avon rep so I'm a little bias, but any and all Avon products are wonderful, I thought this even before I became a rep so they are great, and they don't stink or feel sticky.

I believe that Skin So Soft by Avon is safe to use, although I am not 100% sure.
I have also heard from many sources that rubbing dryer sheets on exposed skin and keeping one in a pocket will also repel mosquitos. Good luck and have fun camping!

you can go to avon and order some of their skin so soft, it is great to use, if you would not be able to get that in time, you need to get something that is deet free. Look for all natural ingredients, I know that cutter and some of those store brands are coming out with more that is deet free. Also you might want to curb his fruit and sugar eating about 4-6 days before you go, mosquitos are drawn to sweets so that should help him as well. Have fun on your camping trip.

I have a 6-yr-old, loved to go camping, and found (by accident) that coating the exposed skin in baby oil helped tremendously. The oil on the skin causes the mosquitoes to die (I'm guessing it poisons them or destroys their capacity to fly). It takes a little, rubbed on a little more heavily than a typical lotion. But it worked for us, and I hope it works for you! Other than that, we kept a playpen with a snap-on net and burned Citronella candles, used a campfire, and kept her very dry (they are drawn to water). Anyway, good luck and enjoy the camping!

I have used OFF! Botanicals lotion for my son even before he was 1. It worked great for him and us and lasted for at least a couple of hours at a time. It contains only natural mosquito repelling plant material- no deet. The skin-so-soft from Avon works sometimes, but I've found that it's not so good with heavy mosquito infestations and you have to apply very often which is a pain with an active toddler!

I have an excellent book (1001 All Natural Secrets to a Pest-Free Property). I've used the advice in it several times and it has worked every time. It says that anise oil (the oil extracted from anise seeds) works wonders to repel all bugs. You can buy the oil at a health-food store, then add a few drops to your laundry. You can also put it on your skin. It won't only repel mosquitoes, but also flies, bees, pretty much anything. It is also something of a love potion for dogs. If a dog licks your hand and tastes the anise oil, they will be very friendly toward you, even if they were barking at first! Might be worth a shot...

We used this on our son. We go camping several times a year. Cutter makes a wipe. That way you can put it where you want it and not have to spray it on. It worked well for us.

My Pediatrician recommended DEET up to 30%. I use Cutter or OFF wipes. The only thing is, it has to be washed off when you go back in the house (or after several hours). It works for up to 8 hours.
The Avon stuff sounds good, but works for less than 1/2 hour. All the "natural" stuff is also less effective. Also, how do you really know what's in "natural" stuff, because the FDA does not regulate most of it.
The danger of mosquitos is serious and I would rather use a chemical that my Ped thinks is safe than have an itchy, child with West Nile.

We use Badger Anti-Bug Balm: http://www.badgerbalm.com/anti-bug.html. It works pretty well and I feel safer using this rather than the chemical-laden stuff.
