I'm not on Twitter but in watching the news they sometimes talk about tweets and other online posts involving a # and sometimes I see it on some friends facebook posts. I have no idea what it means. Can anyone clue me in?

What can I do next?

# is used for
1. emphasis, such as #storyofmylife

"Migraine, car broke down, screaming kids, now my inlaws want to host dinner... #storyofmylife "

2. or, if an event or popular term is being circulated, then the # term is what people can click on to see all related posts. So, if everyone is talking about tebow, or justinbeiber4eva, or Christmas, it will have the hashtag # in front of the term describing that item so...

"I'm so tired of hearing the Baby it's Cold Outside over and over and over on the radio. Gotta love #Christmas "

3. If there is an event like a conference, it will be tagged with that conference's given tag, so like a red cross meeting where others can quickly find each other's twitter posts to respond to each other will read,

"Anyone have the minutes of the last coordinated blood drive schedule? #rdcnfr

When a hashtag shows up on facebook... it's usually someone who is copy and pasting their twitter status, having it automatically loaded when they post, or thinks everyone gets twitter speak. #lame Or some social media sights are using it now as searchable terms. Again #lame b/c they can't think of their own system?

(see what I did there? ;)

Hopefully someone else will explain it but my daughter said it is a twitter tag. I just can't remember what it means. Like she ended a sentence with #pathetic. Not sure if it is a lookup or means something else. Whatever it is it has been hijacked for nefarious purposes by my daughter. :p

It's called a hashtag. I actually just researched this a little this morning.

It is a twitter thing - well, it started as a twitter thing. It has evolved to be used for any online posting (facebook, google plus?). It can be used as a search term in those social sites to locate posts/tweets/statuses/etc.
