Am I the Only One Who DOES NOT Do Facebook?

Is there anyone else out there who DOES NOT have a facebook account? If no, have you ever considered getting one? The ONLY reason I would get one would be to take advantage of all the high-value coupons from different companies...however, if I did have one, I would be afraid I would be on it all day long.

What can I do next?

I do NOT Facebook. No one in my home uses fb or any other social network. I cannot count then number of viruses I have cleaned off of computers that were picked up from a game or video or file on facebook. But more importantly, I would rather develop and work on real life, face to face relationships than digital ones. I also don't care to share everything that goes on in my life with the rest of the world (and really don't care that Jane Doe drank too much last night either). Any way my point is that life is full enough without having post it all online.

I don't have one, probably never will. I feel like everyone I want to keep in touch with I already do. This is the only "social networking" site I'm on and I'm fine with that.

I don't for a variety of reasons. I've considered getting one because we've moved a bunch of times and a couple of my friends are always hounding me to get one. But, I've decided that it's not something I want in my life and the friends who really, really want me to get an account are free to contact me in other ways and I'd love to hear from them!

I don't and no, have not considered getting one. Too much work to keep it up, and no guarantee the company will not use my info for nefarious purposes - like selling data to advertisers. I'm not on twitter either, I have no need to know what someone I went to high school with ate for dinner LOL!

Being on it all day would not be my worry; my worry would be my privacy.
I know that you don't join those things to be anonymous but the ways that your personal information gets spread (it's like the 7 degrees of Kevin Bacon game)
can lead to people you don't know suddenly knowing a whole lot about you.
NOT for me...

My recommendation if you want to take advantage of the coupons is to open a new email account and then open a FB account with that email. By doing this you won't linked all your personal life, photos, etc.

When you're on some sort of social network, you have to be very disciplined.

A friend got me into FB. I'm glad to be back in touch with people I just don't see any more. We may no longer be moving in the same circles, but it's nice to say, "Hi! Glad to hear how you're doing!"

I was told right away by my children - and it's true - that FB is like going to a big party. If you stay at the party all day long, you're wasting your time. And anybody at the party can overhear what you say or what is said to you, so you want to be very careful - and very selective - whom you talk to, what you say, and why. The mental picture of all the party-going eavesdroppers is a good one for me.

Like chocolate or booze, FB can become an addiction, so don't go there if you don't want to or can't handle it. And yes, you can learn new things about your friends. It's no surprise that some employers check out applicants' FB accounts to find out things about them that they didn't put on their resumes.

Hi J.,

I have a facebook account. I got one to monitor my teenagers. I'm glad I did. My 19 year old has been totally appropriate and my fifteen year old still needs guidance. In the process of monitoring them, friends I had not seen since elementary school have found me. We have been able to meet, have coffee, dinner and reminiscence. I have been able to find people for reunions much more quickly than the telephone and email. For me it has been a benefit. I am not on it but maybe 15 minutes a day. People facebook me instead of emailing. I used to check my email multiple times a day, now I only check it once. I have not added media, simply switched media.

My husband hates any kind of networking but now, as he is going back to school, is required because professors use it to communicate with students....It will probably be me that monitors it for him as well.....aaargh!

Be careful with the couponing and the offers, some are scams and the viruses through facebook are prevalent. You really have to look at a friends post and say "Is that really them talking"....

God bless,

M.

Ive never used any of the coupons,, have never really paid attention to them cause I assume most are some sort of scam to get my email address and send me more spamor viruses on my computer. I dont play any of the games either. What a pain they are when people do nothing but play games . I use fb to keep in touch with friends and family in short fast little snips instead of long emails that I never seemed to get around to anyway.

I have a Facebook account, but I lurk.
I refuse to enter/post anything.
I don't trust their privacy settings and even if you mark everything private you can join a group and have all those settings go out the window.
Really I should have it deleted.
I've lost respect for a few friends who I found were not much like I thought they were and the few others seem to want to post every time they walk their dog.
I prefer just plain old email for communication.

I enjoy playing games with my friends. I have most of them set up to go to every 3 days and play for about an hour for all. I visit with relatives, find out about things they are going through, see pictures of their kids ball games, find out that my long lost relatives on my moms side have kids in a lot of the same sports that I have ours in. We we have something in common to visit about.

I find that my friends and family comment on my family albums and enjoy seeing their parents, aunts and uncles, and cousins pictures. When they see one they are in they get a laugh and comment about how dorky their hair was or what they were wearing. It's a lot of fun for all kinds of things.

I would miss visiting with everyone if FB ceased to exist but I could find something else to do with my time ir I had to.

Facebook isnt near as addictive as this site.
I only go on facebook to read what my kids are up to since they live in Georgia and Hawaii. I'll check it for a few minutes a few times a day or in the middle of the night while hotflashing.
I've never found myself getting "hooked" on facebook. It's kinda boring really.

No, you're not the only one who doesn't. My sister doesn't, and I have some friends who don't. FB is fun. I've reconnected with friends from years ago, and it's such an easy way to stay caught up on everyone and them caught up on me. I never liked MySpace, but FB is way different!

Point being...you might be on it too much if you get an account:-) I have at times. Though, most of the time now I do fine and get on when I have just a minute or two and can read through all my friends updates and see what they are up to, etc. It's quite fun. I've had friends who were anti-FB, and for whatever reason, they ended up getting an account, thinking they wouldn't use it much. They quickly became lovers of FB...hehe.

I do not want my life to be out there and not to have (or manage it constantly and worry about) the SELECTIVITY and amount of information people have about me.

Hi J.,
No, you are not the only one without a Facebook account. I don't have one and don't plan on getting one until my son is old enough to have one, that way I can monitor his. There is just too much of our personal information on the web as it is, I don't want to volunteer to add more.

answers from Los Angeles on

No, you're NOT the only person to not use FB. Most of my family doesn't, and i resisted for a long time.

But, I'm glad I got on. I do play some games, have made awesome friends with people who share ideas and hobbies with me that I never would have met otherwise, I've reconnected with old friends, former classmates, long-distance relatives across the US and in Germany. and a young man I babysat when he was between 2 and 7, who is now in the Air Force.

I also discovered several pages that are legit and share deals, coupons and freebies with my FB friends. I love to cook, bake, craft, & save money on everything, so I've been sharing stuff with my FB friends and started a separate page to do it on. Because they love the things I share and benefit from them I love doing it. They let me know when they buy something I posted a good deal on, (Christmas I was hunting down the lowest prices on Wii's, recently it's been summer stuff) take advantage of a freebie, (like the free dry shampoo, gum, and sweet potato fries I got today today with freebie coupons I heard about on FB,) receive free items in the mail, (some samples and some full-size) or try a craft or recipe I posted.

Sure, I could find out about some of these coupons/deals/freebies on my own and then share them, but FB simplifies the way I hear about them so I don't have to go hunting hit and miss for them, and it gives me a way to share them.

Some people do spend a lot of time on FB, I can't, I have a toddler, so I sometimes have to get off NOW! ; ) Some days I'm on more, some days I sign in, check a couple of things and am done for the day. In any event, I never thought I'd like FB...

I do not have one, and I have been highly resistant. I have the same fear that it will suck up my time. Also, I don't like the idea of sharing all of my personal details with all sorts of people. I really don't need my mother to know that so and so is sleeping with, or cheating on, or whatever the case may be.

I may actually be forced into doing one now for work. I'm in advertising, and I found out last week that they are going to start posting different promos that we are running on facebook. So I am going to need to keep up with it for my clients. I will have to that or pretty much decide not to sell the product.

nope, i do not have a FB page. Too many issues with gossipy girls (notice I said girls? and they are all in their 40's) in my hometown, and girls that have nothing better to do all day then cause more drama. Case in point: girls have been “looking for me” and tried getting info from my son and contacted him through his FB-he ignored them. Another girl is "pretending" to be her husband to keep tabs on him and his ex's, she even had the nerve to tell me others were trying to "look for me." I said tell them to keep looking...

I don't know what coupons you are talking about. I had to put mamapedia in the junk file because I was getting some coupon mail daily. HATE unsolicited email and pop ups.

I have enjoyed FB as a way to stay in touch with family and friends. I might check in a couple times a day for a short period when I am taking a break from my working at home on the books or something.

I don't facebook, twitter or anything like that. The only reason our teen had to get an account was due to she was on yearbook staff and that was the preferred method to interview other students and/or to setup picture appointments for school events. ..you know, I just don't like those kind of websites and I have a few friends that are constantly bugging me to get an account. I tell them, hey...if you know me, you have all you need to contact me. Plus, they have to deal with people tracking them down that they never wanted to hear from ever again. I say keep it private as much as you can and so i'm old school. For coupons I sign up certain company websites, use shortcuts.com, p&gesaver, coupons.com, kroger.com etc. I even put all my appointments in a written book due to I don't trust electronics - sure they are great- but they can crash. So in my book, Facebook is just a phase that will eventually become outdated and something else will be in its place.

I have an account because my relatives talked me into it as far as keeping in communication about a family reuinion coming up back east.
That was a long time ago.
I never go on Facebook.
I have had friends from high school find me and for the most part I was okay with it, but twice.....not so much.
One guy had pictures on there I would have fainted if my relatives saw and the other was someone I hadn't talked to in 30 years who only wanted to bash people we used to know.
Some people love facebook, but it's not for me.

Just my opinion.

P.S. Many employers now ask about social networking and I don't want a potential employer finding me on facebook with a bunch of drama attached.

I don't either which is a bit surprising because I'm pretty up with technology in many ways. I guess the main reason I'm not is because I have friends from a lot of different places and have different relationships with different friends and I don't really want all the pieces of my life (work, twins, autism, past friends, family) all colliding in one place. Also I barely have time to get through my email and snail mail most days so I don't really have the time. I do feel left out sometimes though when everyone else knows what's going on and I don't. Oh well. Anyway you are not alone. :-)

Since they live in D.C., we haven't even been able to meet him yet, and it's nice to be able to see him and let my daughter connect with him that way.

You're not the only one, but you're probably in the minority. There are great reasons to have and not to have. I love it for lots of reasons...I have family in other countries that I can communicate with for NO money, and on our own timezones...I have been able to just ask a question of FB and get tons of great responses (comes in handy being a new mom - it can act as a Mamapedia of just people I know). It helps me keep up with people's birthdays. I've DVD swapped with friends I haven't seen since high school and wouldn't be in touch with otherwise. I have never had any privacy issues, there are so many settings you can control. In fact, the only way to even search for me on there is if you are already a friend of someone I know. Strangers can't contact me, see my pictures, see what I'm doing, or anything like that. As far as what someone said below about it being egotistical - it just depends how you use it. I'm not updating the world on every move I make, and there ARE people who want to see pics of my baby. It's hard to find the time to communicate with all my friends and family individually when I have a 4 month old, so why not share with all of them at once?

It can be addicting, being on it all day is a real concern, but I just allow myself an hour each morning for ALL my website loves and then get to work on the rest of my day.

I don't FB either although it seems everyone else does. I try to keep my personal and professional life separate and am afraid that if I got on FB, my friends would post pics or say things that I wouldn't want my employees, clients, parents, children etc knowing. Not that we do bad things or anything but a lot of my friends would think nothing of posting things like "I was at so and so's house last night and we all got so wasted...." or putting that not so flattering picture up there. I like Melissa M.'s idea of using a fake email/FB account for coupons. I may try that out and see how it goes.

My DH refuses, so half the pictures from friends are him and half the friends are his. I only got on FB to keep contact with some of my friends who moved off email communications. I don't play the games. I also do not post my DD and her big brother and sister know they cannot post DD, either. I treat it like an open forum. I keep names to nicknames and don't post rants or anything I don't want out there in public. I keep in touch with far-flung family, which has been a big benefit. My friends list is pretty short. If I or my DH wouldn't sit down with you for dinner, then you're not likely to be on it. Exceptions made for volunteer project people, but most of those fall into the dinner category, too.
