What Do You Think of This for a Home Kitchen/daycare?

My kitchen table and chairs look to be about 15 years old. They are only 6 years old. But with daycare 24/7, they have stood up pretty well. The scratches are so numerous and deep, it's just not worth trying to fix. The chairs are just as bad. The cost of repairing would be as much as buying new.

Sooo... I'm considering getting restaurant style booths.

I've been looking at some crazy fun sites that will do them in almost any color of Vinyl that I want and the prices are not that different than a nice dinette set. I'm leaning this way because as a child my grandmother had a booth in her basement and my cousins and I have fond memories of playing there.

My husband thinks the kids will poke a hole in the vinyl with a pencil or something and they won't last any time. But we really use crayons or markers most often and the vinyl is commercial grade. Am I crazy for considering this? I do have cats and I am concerned about their hind feet and claws. But we can and do often file them down with an electric pet nail filer. We can do it more often.

Then I can't help but think, that the scratches on the table started looking bad in the 2nd year. It's hideous now. I've lived with scratches for a long time. How much worse could a few cracks or punctures look until I replace one side or the other at a time?

I have been considering going back to highchairs. I would have to if I get these. I do have child-sized chairs. But many of the kids like sitting at the big table. Well, I have a child-sized picnic table.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Riley!!! I hope you meant that you think my daycare kids would have accidents on them. YUCK. That's NOT allowed and NOT happening. I am religious about pull-ups. NO child stays in my house without diapers or pull-ups until I decide they are ready and THEN, they are kept on plastic furniture for at least 3-4 months AFTER they have been in underwear and proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to me that they are not going to have accidents.

My couch is 6 years old and does not smell like urine. I'd be driven out of business if it did. No one would come and sit on my couch during an interview and then choose me if it smelled like urine. LOL... I hope you don't mean that the people putting them together would use USED foam that has already been peed on in someone elses house!! Surely not. Good question to ask about the insides being NEW.

I have found 2 local companies that build these and emailed them both. They are both restaurant design companies. So I would tell them I need to pay for the highest grade material.

I think it sounds cute but my kids sat at the little tykes tables and in the little tykes chairs. I sat in a medium height chair just the right height to be there but a bit above their heads.

I liked this better because I can see everything going on and they have their own place that is exactly their height. They also did their crafts and art work on it too.

I did put shower surrounds on one wall for them to color with washable crayons and markers. They had a lot of fun with that.

Do you not have any kids that use booster chairs or do you just keep them in high chars until they can sit at the kitchen table? I like these for a family to eat at, but honestly I'm not crazy about them for daycare... partly because they aren't accessible for little kids, and I envision kids bouncing on them. As far as the punctures or holes in the seats, they do sell vinyl repair kits for restaurant booths. I have no idea where, but I remember them from many years of work in the restaurant business.

I love a site called discount school supply if you are interested and have the room for kids tables and chars. I have a set that I've used for the last 4 years (as long as I've been doing daycare) and it still looks brand new. It's made to withstand scissors, paint, markers etc... washes clean (they come in different colors and are the kind of table surfaces they use in classrooms. The chairs have had and kids rocking it them, wiggling etc... and I've never had to tighten them or do anything but clean them.

Just my two cents since ya asked... : )

We're in a craftsman type area up here. Meaning LOTS of booths.

If you get them... be prepared for them to smell like urine. Even the vinyl ones... the pee soaks down into the seams... and the urine gets into the padding. If you DO get a padded seat... get the kind that can come off and go into the washing machine (and make sure that they will fit in your washer.

Otherwise... I'd recommend wood. Solid wood, not laminate. You can always take sandpaper to wood and refinish it. It's a 1 day project and only costs about $30!!!

I'd go for something used and durable....I don't think vinyl...might as well buy leather. ..holes can still be poked in it. It's a cute idea though...but if you have to finance it....NOT!!! Go to thrift stores or used furniture stores for something that it's not gonna matter much if it is scratched or poked I even say those foldable leg tables that people use for yardsales that have a white top.
Added: Now that looks like something that is gonna last....I super like it!

If the upholstery is truly commercial grade, I think this would work. Think of the banquettes in restaurants. They get tough wear and look good for years. Kids sit on them, use pencils and markers.

Later: I wonder if you'd have difficulty with kids getting in each others' way? Would they sit next to each other peacefully without the "don't touch me" sort of whining. And, how would you get to the child sitting next to the wall or in the middle?

I priced out a set and if we didn't have windows nearly to the floor, I would put one in my kitchen right now.
They will hold up because they are restaurant grade.

I love the idea of a booth with vinyl! I actually just told my hubby that the other day. We have the bar height L shaped benches with 2 regular chairs (leather) and my kids have never poked a hole in it and we use pencils, crayons, scissors, etc on our table all the time!

Just because something is restaurant grade, doesn't mean it will last. Restaurants use patches and repair kits. They also replace the vinyl or leather every few years. When I was a kid we had custom vinyl built-in benches and they did not last at all. It was commercial grade for boats and it was torn up within 2 or 3 years. We were a family of 5, so one can only imagine how much faster this would fall apart with a day care. If you want to do the whole bench thing, go with microfiber. It's easy to clean, even marker comes out of it with a little soap and water. It's also durable and animal hair is easy to clean up since it won't weave in with the fabric.
