18-Month Old Doesn't Want to Use Booster Seat

Hi Moms

My 18 month old daughter has decided she is a big girl and throws a FIT whenever we try to put her in her booster seat. She wants to either sit (or kneel) in a chair by herself or sit on my lap and eat. Don't get me wrong, I'll take a snuggle, but it would be really nice if she would sit on her own. I am also really worried she is going to fall out of the chair and hurt herself. I want to get her back into the booster seat, but I don't want to fight WWIII for it. As the holidays are approaching, my family will want to go to some nice restaurants and it would be great if I didn't have to worry about my daughter climbing on chairs, wanting to move from lap to lap, etc. She used to love sitting in her own seat, I don't know how to get back to it. Also, she isn't talking a ton so I can't get her to tell me why she doesn't like the booster chair.

Any suggestions or stories of your own struggles would be appreciated.
A.

I put my kids in restaurant high chairs when they were available. The restaurant boosters are tippy and don't look comfortable, and the high chairs discourage roaming around the table. Or let her sit at a chair unless she moves around the table, and then she loses the chair privilege. Or keep her strapped in a stroller and let her eat off the stroller tray. At home, can she sit at a child-sized table?

Some battles are worth fighting, and you have to pick your own. For me, I'd try to find a compromise that keeps her from wandering around the restaurant (unsafe and annoying) but make her comfortable, too.

Be persistent!!! You have to train her. Use rewards. Ignore the fits. Put her on the floor if she has one. Have her sit at the table to play, not just to eat so she can get used to it and is actively engaged with something fun. Let her "set" the table with at least spoons and napkins so she has some ownership. Have her put a doll or stuffed animal in her seat and buckle her in for practice. Praise the doll. Pretend to eat with the doll and keep praising! You may want to keep using a high chair at restaurants. The wood ones are made for big kids!!! The plastic boosters they provide slide off most chairs easily or have to sit so far back in a booth that she can't reach the table. We went straight from the high chair to sitting in a regular seat with my older ones and will probably do the same with my baby as he grows. For dinners out, bring a special bag or backpack with special things inside. Things that can only be played with at restaurants. Small play-doh containers with play-doh scissors (they have no sharpness), color wonder paper and markers, invisible ink pads, special writing tablets with unique colors, sticker sheets and papers, washable self inking stampers, etc. With Halloween and Christmas coming, there will be tons of trinket type toys that are perfect. Those little tic tac toe boards with the pegs are a good example. She can't follow the rules yet, but with supervision, she'll love putting the pegs in the holes. My big rule was that once we sit, you don't get up. If you let her up, she probably won't sit back down. Distract her with the goodies in the bag or some crackers to keep her seated when she gets antsy. You may also want to take her out more now to get her used to sitting before the big Christmas dinners. Practice!! Good luck. You can do it!

I invested in a youth chair when my 1st hit that stage. With the youth chair they are sitting in a real chair...but it is taller and slides right up to the table.
When it came to eating out I put my foot down, he either sat in the highchair pulled up to the table or in a booster or we left. We only had to leave once to make him understand that we were not playing games, just make sure the first time out is by yourselves so you won't be disappointing those that are there to join you.
