HI all! We have 3 wonderful children, 8yr, 20 months, and 2 months, but we have decided not to have anymore children because I have a hard time being pregnant. I always get pregnancy induced hypertension, and am required to take medication and bed rest. It is just to hard on my body, so we have decided no more children. My sweet husband of almost 11 yrs has agreed to get a vasectomy, our consult is May 6th. I was wondering if any of your husbands have had this done, and if you have any advice or suggestions you could offer. Thanks, and God Bless!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to say thanks for all the advice and responses. It really helped and made the whole situation less scary. He finally had the procedure on June 13th. So far he has had no problems, only a small amount of swelling and hardly any pain. He has followed the doctors advice and laid down most of today and yesterday. Thanks again, mommas.

My husband had it done when I was pregnant with our 4th child almost 5 years. There were no problems, no horror stories. I've even had friend's whose husbands have also had the procedure done with no problems. Just follow doctor's orders.

Hi C.,

My husband had the procedure done and it was fine, no horror stories to tell. We walked in and they gave him a shot in the testicles to dumb that area and i sat outside the door not even 2 min. and the whole thing was over just that fast. we waited about an hour to make sure no bleeding etc.. they have you to keep an ice pack there for a while but other than that it was fine, please relax and make sure you let your hubby know it doesn't change anything as far as his performance, excitement etc...We have 3 children of our own and ours are stair-step so my husband had his procedure done but his is not reversable we are very pleased.
May God watch over you and yours.

My hubby had it done about 8 years ago. It is an office procedure. Make sure he wears the athletic supporter, or else the "boys" will be more sore than they should be. My husband felt so good after that we went to the mall. But he really regretted that for the next two days. So make sure he really does take it easy. Just because he feels great doesn't mean he should be up and walking around. But men are stubborn that way. Other than that no complications for us. You might want to get a reusable ice pack.
Good luck,
L.

I worked for a urologist for several years and was involved in several of these. You will need to drive him to and from the appt. The main thing is if you can schedule it on a Thursday or Friday where he'll have the weekend to recover it usually works better. The doctor will give you all the pre and post op instructions. Make sure you keep ALL post op appts. and continue to use protection until the tests come back no sperm. There have been patients who haven't kept those appts. and then were surprised by another blessing!

It's really not bad if you can give him the weekend to rest. I would think about surprising him with a basket that has his favorite magazine, chocolate or whatever he loves to do when he's resting.

Blessings to you and your family!
L.

Dear C.:

I highly recommend vasectomies. My husband recovered very quickly and with little pain. It is really a minor procedure (especially considering what you went through with the pregnancies). Try to schedule it on a Friday before a big game or race so he won't be bored out of his mind staying in bed. A bag of frozen peas was recommeded to us because they conform to the area. They worked great. I only have one precaution. A friend of ours did felt so good that he went out on the tractor and worked for about 12 hours the next day. He swelled terribly and ended up in bed for a week. Have your husband go ahead and stay off of his feet as much as humanly poossible for those first couple of days to avoid complications. Good luck to the both of you!
Jen

Hi, my husband had a vasectomy a month before my last child was born..We have 5 all under age 7...My advise would be.....The doctors say its only a little incision but believe me it will hurt.Make sure he lays down for a few days,my hubby got up after first day and over did it and was in bed for a week because it caused so much swelling, kinda like engourged breast.he ended up in alot of pain,so go ahead and baby him and let him rest, the only other advise is to make sure he is tested before you have any contact,i got pregnant 3 month after a vasectomy..but miscarried. within a few days he'll be hobbling around. a week into it, he'll be almost normal. 2 weeks later, completely normal. yes the doc will prescibe some pain pills for the first few days. take those just in case. otherwise, if he takes it easy, he'll be fine.

hi C.,
my hubby went in for the snip last august. he has two kiddos & two grandkids and we decided that we didn't need any together. it was super easy! i think most people have covered it - office visit, local anesthetic, wear/take briefs for afterward. there is some bleeding, he will get pain meds, and he should definitely take it easy. mine was back at work in a day or two. he moved/lifted/did more than he should have and was sore a few days longer than it should have been, but no complications. and now, just 9 months later, his scars have healed and we are loving life! :) i highly recommend it!

My husband had it done 11 months ago. No issues at all. Did it on a friday, back to work on a monday. Bring tight underwear to wear home (no boxers), make sure they sit on their arse all weekend and then send them to work on monday. They'll feel fine and they'll want to do more than they should, but the more they do, the more they'll hurt later. It's best to just take it easy, watch some movies, and chill for the weekend.

My husband is a gym rat and hockey maniac. He took the whole next week off of the gym and I think skated about 10 days afterwards. I'm guessing the same would go for anyone who works out at high level.

I was so shocked it was an office procedure and just a specialist co-pay! How East Is That?!?!?!!

My husband and i decided that two children was our limit. While pregnate with my daugter the doctor said that is would be much easier for my husband to have a vasectomy and the recovery time would be much quicker, than for me to have my tubes tied. After our daughter was born we made the appointment, both of us were required to attend the consultation, the dr just explains the procedure, and tells you that while there is a reversal procedure available, it is to be considered permanent. My husband had it done on a Friday and was back to work on Monday. He was a little uncomfortable but that was only a short time. It was a blessing. I am so thankful that he had it done. He has had no complications at all and was back to normal within a few days. Good luck!

Dear C.,
My husband had a vasectomy, seven years ago. Everything went fine for him. Your husband will need at least two days to recover and lots of sleep. My husband had pain killers that helped with the sleeping. I helped him get up out of bed and change clothes things like that. My husband had a hard time sitting due to soreness and swollen area. All in all the recover time was not bad. Make sure to have some frozen wash cloths or ice packs. Your husband will also need a athletic supporter. The Doctor told us this so I am sure they will tell you the same thing. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Well, I know vasectomies are routine, and normally do not have any complications. But my hubby was the exception to the rule. He had his done on a Thursday morning, hoping to be back to normal by Monday. He followed all the aftercare directions to a T, but had extreme pain and bruising that looked awful! He had to have an ultrasound, and was going in for follow up surgery if it didn't resolve on it's own. He wasn't able to "function" for almost 3 months. It took him almost 5 months to heal completely. Once we made it thru that period, it was so totally worth it!!! I totally trust the dr, as he has performed several for our friends, and is my hubby's regular urologist as it is. My husband's body just did not tolerate it well.

My cousin accidentally pulled his stitches out when he had his done a few years ago. Oops, not a good thing either!

DON'T tell your hubby about the horror stories. Assure him he'll be fine. When the directions say to relax and use heat or ice, do it!!! Be sure he goes for his follow up "samples" aftewards too. I've heard so many that didn't, and had "oops" pregnancies. I hope all goes well for him. Trust me, it is SO worth it.

Funny, I was talking to my neighbor about this today. We aren't ready for my DH to go thru this yet, but she was explaining about her husband seeing a dr who did it the old-fashioned way vs. the guy across the street who had it done with a laser. She said her husband was in a lot of pain whereas our other neighbor had very little pain. So ask for the laser!

After an unplanned pregnancy (and eventual loss) that caused him to blame me...I required a vesectomy or he wouldn't get near me. (as to be assured there would be no more issues with pregnancies)

He had it done. Was angry because he had it done...but other than being sore for longer than expected, he had no complications and I don't regret a moment.

He divorced me later that year. But at least I know he won't be bringing anymore kids into his life.

Sorry...probably not what you want to hear huh?

Seriously tho...if no kids is where you want to go, it's an outpatient procedure, it takes no time at all...and the recovery is short.

And you can do the deed all day long and twice on Sundays with no fear...

Gotta love those perks!!!

Smiles to you. Good luck.

My husband did it around 1996 with Dr. Reginald Trentham in Plano. He had no problems other than......he felt better than he thought so he did not follow the Dr. orders to the T. Therefore, he swelled up like crazy and was in pain a couple of days. Nothing like the previous poster though.

We carried samples to the hospital routinely until he was found to be clear. Man, took him 6 months to assure that all those little spermies were OUT.

It is great for us. I was still scared that i might get pregnant (we have our one and only) so I stayed on the pill
at the time and then in 2001 I had a hysterectomy. Now THAT was the best thing I ever did! I've never felt or looked better!!

Good luck to you. He'll be ok. Just make sure he follows Dr. orders even if he thinks he is fine.

Hi C.!
I know of several men that had that procedure done.
It really is a lot easier on them than it is for women to be sterilized. Just make sure he follows the dr's orders for after-care. As soon as he comes home give him the pain meds no matter how much he fights you on it, and put an ice pack on that area. Make him rest for as long as the dr. says. Doing otherwise will invite problems and pain.

Good luck to you both.

Sincerely,
T.
