Hello all! I'm wondering if anyone has chosen Essure instead of having a tubal ligation. . . It is non-surgical, permanent, hormone free, and you can walk out of your ob/gyn's office within an hour. We've talked for a couple of years about DH getting a vasectomy, but he's so active and so incredibly busy, that there just isn't a 'good' time for EITHER of us to have 'down' time for a surgery of any kind.
If you have had it done, please fill me in on your thoughts then and what are your thoughts now? We're still in the decision making stage as to what permanent method to use so any insight would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance!
E.

Hi E.~

My hubby had a vasectomy on Friday and was back to work Monday. Not much "down time" involved!

Make sure you talk to your Doc about it... I thought it was a simple in office procedure from the website and even talked to my doc sbout it and it never came up until I was scheduling that it had to be done in the hospital and is still a surgery usuing anestheic (don't know how to spell it but you know what I mean!). I wasn't able to get it done because my dr only does it on wednesdays and you have to have someone drive you and stay with you that day! I have three kids under the age of four and my hubby and I both work full time on opposite schedules so it just won't work out.

A co-worker of mine had essure done. She said it really is as easy as they make it sound. Her only problem was that one side didn't work- so they had to do that side again... Not a big deal unless you accidently get pregnant again in the mean time! Other than that, she has said it is great! I'm sure someone else can give you more insight...

My husband had a vasectomy done late on a friday and was back to work on Monday. When we discussed it he said, "But that will hurt"! I said, "And childbirth doesn't"? Case closed.

Hubby had TERRIBLE time with vasectomy.....swelled up like little melons.....I don't think this is common but my hubby is active too...he was down for 4 days and still had pain in "that area" for weeks afterwards. But I know that isn't typical. I had uterine ablation...best decision I ever made, however, not a form of birth control. What about IUD? Have you spoken with dr. about it?

Hello E. I am 37yrs old and will be having the procedure done April 18th. They have a web site online that is very helpful with questions you may have. I would be more then happy to get back with you after my procedure if you would like. One of my coworkers had it done and is very pleased with results. She had no down time and no pain. And was back to normal routine the next day. Hope this helps you out some.

My DR suggested it to me. He said I would have anestesia too. He highly recommened it over Vas. We ended up with the vas b/c I was to afraid of it being "final" KWIM? Even though it is final b/c he is useless, it isn't me. I was hoping more people that had it done would respond so I could see what I missed out on.

Dear E.,
I have never heard of that procedure, but I have had the tubaligation surgery done and I was in and out of hospital within a couple of hours and there was really no pain at all a couple of twinges at the site where I was opened 1/2 inch down from my belly button. I am 32 and have two daughters 11 and 7 and one son 4. I have had friends that have had the vesectomy done and they said it was like 1 hour photo in and out. Some tenderness but were able to get up and walk around with very little discomfort. If I come across anyone that has had this Essure done I will find out their input and let you know.

Hi, I know many men that had vasectomies including my husband. The recovery is 24 hours. A friend had his on a Saturday morning and was ready for going to work on Monday. Totally outpatient, usually in a doctors office.

After my fourth child I asked my OB/GYN about a "no worries" plan of birthcontrol. I am unable to take pills or any birthcontrol medications in any form. The Doctor's answer was tell your husband to have a vasectomy, it's the only way. It is very low risk but a tubal ligation is higher risk surgery. He said to remember the physical challenges you went through while you were pregnant, giving birth, and recovering for months. It is the least a husband can do.
With a device you will still have worries if you miss a period. You will still have worries after having sex.

I had the essure procedure done in Dec. 2006. My 2nd son was 11mos old. I was "down" for a total of 24 hrs. I had it done at Fairview Hospital, in Cleveland, OH. It was the best decision we made. We knew after Justin (our 2nd son) was born that 2 kids was enough for us and my husband did not want the vasectomy, so it was up to me. I like the fact that I don't have to remember to take a birth control pill every day anymore.

Haven't done Essure, however if you can make time for your husband to get the vasectomy, I highly recommend it. My husband had it done recently and it's been a huge burden lifted. We go through pregnancy and delivery, by God the Men should have to endure something. The Vasectomy is quick and they experience some discomfort for about a week. They're big babies. Just give them an Ice pack, something to eat and drink and they'll be fine. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Hi E.,

I actually just had the Essure procedure at the end of Jan. Its SOOOO easy! I went into the outpatient part of the hospital. The dr. came in and told me what was going to happen and 30 min. later I was waking back up. He said he had the actual procedure done in 7 min. and it only took that long because there was someone from the Company(essure) monitoring the procedure. I went home that night and I was a little crampy and groggy from the anestia. That was it! I cooked dinner that night! I bled for about 2-3 days. It wasnt much at all. It was the really dark, brown like blood.(like it was old). He said that that was the scar tissue healing. I never even took any of my pain killers he gave me. I have to go back at the end of this month to get a xray and make sure its sealed up. So I am still on birth control until we get that clearence. What I really liked about the procedure asside from the fact that I recovered so quit, was that it had NO hormones, more effective rate than the tubal and it was so easy.

I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!

Let me know if you have any questions!!!

T.

IMO - I would not do the Essure thing. You can NEVER change it. I would just get an IUD. They are so awesome! No worries when you have one. Plus if you opt for the Mirina... you really don't have a period. If you look at the Stats. an IUD is better than a tubal ligation.
Just a thought!
