Treadmill Etiquette

I just bought a treadmill, which I'm SO excited to use! Unfortunately, the only place I had room to put it in my apartment was my bedroom. I live on the second floor and so that's probably directly above a bedroom of another tenant. I'm sure it will make some noise, me running on there, so I want to see what you moms think about proper times to use it. Obviously I wouldn't be running on it at midnight or something, but

What would be the earliest time to use it?
The cut off for how late in the evening one should use it?

Also, should I simply put a note on my neighbor's door explaining that I've bought one and asking what their preference would be?

I know them well enough to say hello and the girl gave me a ride to the library one time when my car was in the shop, but that's the extent of how well I know them. (A girl and her husband, no kids). I want to be respectful so I'd love any input on you Mama's about the etiquette behind this. Thanks in Advance! :-)

So What Happened?

Thanks Mamas! I took them some cookies and just asked them to tell me if the noise was bothersome. She is very sweet and I doubt she will have an issue. I think she really appreciated me thinking of them. :-)

I would just ask her what her wake up & bed times are, so you can plan accordingly.

You sound like a nice neighbor!

I would just ask them what they prefer. If they're early risers and up in the morning busy getting ready for work, then that might be a good time to run. If they tend to get home late or are in another part of their apartment in the evening, that might work as well. Just ask - and if I were you I would sweeten the request by offering to let them use it as well if they want to. I doubt they would take you up on the offer, but it would be really nice to extend it.

That is so great that you are considerate of your neighbors.
I would just ask them. I think they will be more tolerant since you are being considerate.

I think it's great that you're even thinking about your neighbors. So many people don't. Since you're already acquainted, leave a note or call on them. Let them know you have a treadmill and that you'd like to know when and how much they can hear it when you're using it. If they will give you that feedback, then you can ask about too-early and too-late.

And keep up this acquaintance. It's wonderful to be able to know your apartment neighbors!

You sound like an awesome neighbor!! Thanks for your courtesy!!! Hopefully they will respond to you. If you know their work schedule even better but if it is during the week I would think working out by 8 a.m. would be ok and even earlier if you know they are up earlier themselves...Weekends get a little tricky. Some people sleep in and some maintain their schedules and get going early. Keep us posted.

I would not run as early on the weekends as during the week (assuming they have 9-5 type jobs). No earlier than 7:30 ? (unless they say something) and probably no later than around 9:00 on week/work nights. On Friday/Saturday nights, I would think until 10 (not later) would probably be ok. Rather than ask them what times they would prefer, you might find it works better for you if you drop them a note and inform them you have a treadmill now and hope that they will let you know if the noise is bothersome.

(some people might find the noise more bothersome just trying to figure out WHAT it is, rather than the noise itself).

I grew up living in apartments and I wish someone would have cared enough to ask. From my experience, I would not do it before 9am or after 9pm. You might want to make sure there will not be a child under your bedroom because that could cause a problem. I hated it when I was woken up by the people above me and so did my parents! It would startle me and then I was scared to go back to sleep. You might also want to call the office and ask about their noise guidelines. Most apartments have those in place to help avoid conflict between tenants.

I would simply leave them a note to get let you know if the noise is bothersome and to let you know.

You are just about the nicest neighbor ever! I'd say it kind of depends on their lifestyles. If they work the 9-5 you could probably get away with 6AM being the earliest and maybe 10PM the latest? I'm not sure, but I think it would be super nice if you just mentioned it when you saw one of them and tell them to let you know if it was bothering them.

Ask.

Especially young couples tend to have odd hours... either out of preference or because they're low on the totem pole and get crappy shifts. They could well be working swing shifts and be sleeping at noon, or getting home from work at noon and going to bed at 4pm.

They could be sound sleepers, but need their concentration in their waking/home hours and prefer you ran while they slept...

I could keep listing variables... but honestly... it's just wasted space, solved by an easy Q:

"I just bought a treadmil and wanted to find out what hours y'all aren't home so I could plan on doing most of my running then."

Same token... they make some treadmills esp for apartments. They tend to be raised up... so nearly no noise travels at all (less than just walking quietly. AND there's something called Dura-son. It's a noise blocking layer that musicians (and people with hardwood floors, people with kids, luxury condo builders, etc lay down to cancel out the noise traveling between floors/ceilings and rooms. You can buy a strip of it and place it under something like the interlocking kid foam squares and probably deaden the noise completely

We had one in an apartment a long time ago that I was SURE our downstairs neighbor could hear (sounded like a herd of 3-legged rhinos galloping so hard the lights would flicker..gotta love apt style living). I worried about it too, so I casually asked her one day I saw her outside. To my surprise, she barely heard it, and didnt mind. I still tried to tread lightly and only in the early evening, just in case she was just being polite.

So, I'd say no earlier than 8 or 9 am, no later than 8 or 9 pm, and I personally wouldnt do a note or ask them when you should run..just tell them if the noise bugs them to let you know.

Every apartment I've lived in has established "quiet hours" Anything that makes any sort of noise those should be held. They are typically 10pm to 8am. I've always loved living in apartments so I have for the last 10 years and I always keep those hours quiet. No vacuuming or anything. I expect my neighbors to as well. If they don't I either talk with them or if that doesn't work I contact the management. On weekends I understand most people sleep in, heck most of the time I do too, so I try and keep quiet till 10 am.

I would say after 10am and before 9pm would be safe. And when you see them in the hall, you can ask them if there is a specific window of time that would work for them. You're being super thoughtful :)
