Teething - Mesa,AZ

I am pretty sure my 11 month old is teething again. (it seems to be a never ending thing with him). He hardly wants to eat anything during the day and is waking up at least three times during the night. He wakes up screaming and a bottle is the only thing that settles him down so he can fall back to sleep. This has been going on for about a week now. Any advice on how much longer this might go on? I am exhausted.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I purchased the teething tablets & they seem to be helping him. He is only awaking once during the night now (although he is sleeping in my bed - I am a softie). Thank you all for your advice - I had never heard of the teething tablets & they seem to work better than the baby orajel.

Heather,

I know just what you are going through! With my little guy(3 boys) I used teething tablets, and frozen waffels. They really loved them! I also let them suck on a wash cloth that I put in the fridge for 1 minute. I hope this helps so you can get some rest!

Warm wishes,
C.

Mu daughter is 20 months old and on and off still teething. All I can recomment is infant tylenol the first time he wakes up and that should get him through the night. Is he running fever and is an ear infection out of the question? The screaming points more toward that than teething.

Heather,

Sorry to hear your up all night. Teething is an experience that takes lots of patience. But there is hope, lots of old remedies that help to relax baby. Have you tried frozen gauze pads soaked in chamaomile tea. They usually help during the day. Or there are some herb solutions such as teething tablets or gripes water (not sure of the spelling) available at Wild Oats or Whole Foods. As long as baby is well hydrated, I wouldn't worry about eating foods for a few days. Be in the moment with baby (even at 3:30am) and you'll comfort him and get through this just fine. :)

Heather, I wouldn't let it go too much longer without seeing your Dr. But in the mean time, you might want to pro-actively give him a dose of tylenol before he goes to bed. Then I would try to leave him alone during the night. Whether it's teething or not, going to him is only going to reinforce that behavior. Good Luck!

Try the homeopathic teething tablets made by Hyland's. You can get them at Wal Mart, Walgreens, Osco or the Health Food section at most grocery stores. They are wonderful and really helped all three of my children. They thought they were candy. Just put 3 on or under their tongue and they dissolve instantly and give immediate relief.

Have you tried giving him little pieces of ice (like from sonic's)? Try freezing nipples with a little watter in them and also his bottles (water about one-fourth to one-third of the way). Popscicles and frozen carrots are also good. Feel free to mail me back. (I have two daughters, 3 and 1 1/2 years old).

Heather,

(I'm assuming you've weaned) I would first suggest Hyland's Teething Caps available at Arizona Health Foods. Many moms swear by them.

I would also suggest Gripe Water and Rescue Remedy from the same place or Sprout's. Rescue Remedy will help you too :)
All of this is all natural.

Teething is one of those many pains (no pun intended) that can come and go and (emphasis)[can] take awhile but not always. You can help by finding different ways to cope. It will get better even on it's own.

Hope this helps,

T.

Unfortunately, teething can last up until the child is 2. First off, Orajel. I'm sure you've tried that. Most stores carry a product called "Teething Tablets". These are little pellets that dissolve in the childs mouth. These were one of the only things that kept me going when my two were teething at the same time. Putting an ear swab in rum and dabbing the gums has a numbing effect, and so little alchohol as to be non-existant, but most mothers don't like to do that. There are also "baby food popsicles". If you put formula or slightly watered down baby food into popsicle cups (can be small paper cups that you stick popsicle sticks in) so that your infant can suck on something cold and get his gums numbed, but still fill up his belly enough so that he's not hungry enough to keep waking up at night. - Hope it helps!

Hi Heather,
I can't tell you how much longer it will last, but I had a couple of ideas for you. Have you tried Hylands Teething Tablets? We used them for my son (now 23 months) and they were a Godsend. They seemed to help with his pain and helped him to sleep as well. You can get them at Target, Walgreens and I think I've seen them at Walmart too. They are in the baby section. When teething seems to be really bothering our son we will give him 3 of those and also a dose of motrin or tylenol before bed. It seems to help him sleep better though the night.
Hope that helps,
K.

Once my daughters started teething it seemed like it went on for pretty consistently 6 months or so until the majority of their teeth were in. Of course there were short periods of time in there when things were good. Homeopathic teething tablets saved my life! You can usually get them at any store with a pharmacy (supermarket, Wal-mart, Target, etc.). Sometimes they are out with the vitamins and herbal supplements, but sometimes you have to ask the pharmacist. Good Luck!

Heather,

I've been told that babies can experience teething into toddlerhood until their 2yrs - that's when all the molars (Bigger teeth) should all be in. My son is turning 2 this month and he does the same thing when he's teething, doesn't sleep well, diarrhea, and doesn't eat like he normally does. You're probably starting if not already weaning him off the bottle. I filled my son's sippy cup with ice water at bedtime and put it in the crib with him and until he got use to it being in there he only would wake up once because he couldn't find it. We've started to potty train him now so he only gets 1/2 a cup of water and we'll slowly decrease it. My daughter is 3 1/2 and still has water at night but doesn't wet the bed but I think boys are different in that area. Anyway, hope you get some sleep soon!

T. - Dentists are okay with sippy cups at night as long as it is only 100% water in the cup.

Dear Heather:

Teething is a hereditary factor. If your mother or grandmother kept good records of you/your parent's health, you can "generally speaking" get a good idea of how long this will take. Girls usually get their teeth in sooner than boys, but it can take up to 2.5 years for the full set of teeth to come in. Usually, a child gets four new teeth every four months after age 6 months. Acetaminophen, according to your doctor's recommended dose, can help your child with the night sleep problems (teeth grow at night too). Cool compresses usually help with swelling of the teeth or allowing your child to sip on cool drinks. Supporting your child with your nurturing touch is always good. Best of luck to you!

I can't remember how long the teathing lasts exactly. I think it is usually about 2 weeks or so. Two VERY long weeks! I did want to tell you about someting I used for my kids. It worked so well. It is called teething tablets from hylands. It is a homeopathic teathing tablet that dissolves immediatly. You can find them at most Walmarts and Walgreens. I am sure most drug stores carry them. I swear by those things. There seems to be relief immediatly when the tablet is disolved. Best of luck to you. Hang in there!

My daughter went through the same thing around that time. It was exhausting. My pediatrician told us NOT to give the bottle...easier said than done! After a week,we gave her a dose of infant Motrin and she started sleeping through the night after 3-4 days. Good luck!

Like many of the others stated, the homeopathics are the way to go. You can find them at Vitamin Cottage, Whole Foods or Alfalfa's, etc. The one's that I used are in a blue vial called Boiri (spelling may be off) and you want Chamomilla. Do not touch the tablets, just twist them into the cap and put in the baby's mouth. My little one used to ask for them and then rub them across her gums. They have an anti-inflammatory property to them and you can't over dose. Teething though, seems to go on forever, sorry to say.
Good Luck-K.

Have you tried the all-natural teething tablets? They were a blessing for my two kids. If you are interested, they are in a clear bottle with blue labeling (I think) in the pharmacy area of stores like wal-mart. Our pediatrician recommended them to us. Good luck. A.

Hi Heather!
While I am no doctor and am pretty new at the baby thing I am going through what you are right now! Our son is 13 months old and as of this afternoon he has 9 teeth in and three more that are begging to come in! So far he has the four top and bottom teeth and one molar just cropped up this past week. During this time he has gone from a sweet baby that sleeps all night to a grump who is up a few times a night. We didnt seem to have the trouble with the first eight simple teeth but the molars are killing us! We solved the problem by loading him up on some milk right before bed and give him 4 of those highland teething tablets, these have been our saving grace! Into the crib with him goes two cold teething toys. When we go to bed we replace the toys with two new cold ones and that seems to do the trick because he finds them at night to sooth his gums. We have also used the good old Tylenol for infants when he is having a real bad night, like right before the tooth breaks the skin. I am not one for drugging a child but sometimes they need a little more soothing them mom can give! Hope this helps!

I have a 10 month old and 11yrs 4 month old. My youngest is also teething. Top tooth coming in. This is what I have discovered for me that works. I get her ready for bed(change diaper, pj's) I give her teething tablits. Can get them at just about any place. If you can not find them at a local grocery store. Go to a natural store that sells organic food mainly. Like Sprouts, Whole foods, Natures Alternitive. They are completely natural and work magic. So I follow the directs and give her that. If it is really bad then I also give her some Tylenol(b/c the tablits are natural it is not over dosing her) Then I give her a full eight ounce bottle and her father and I hold her. Well one of us holds her and the other is in front holding her as well so she has some real closeness. Cuddle time. Then we lay her down for night night time. This is what works best for us. Also we have now have a sheet over the blinds on her window to make it darker in her room. That became a huge delima for getting her to sleep the light. I am sure you will get allot of advise. I hope it helps you out. Let me know what works best for your son and you. I would like to know for my own future reference. It is normal though. If you have been giving him a bottle this week. You may want to consider taking him in to see the doctor. Allot of the time they get it some formula in their ears and then an infection start. Which would lead to not sleeping as well. Ear aches are very common with children who drink a bottle in the crib.

Take Care,
S.

Heather, There are homeopathic teething tablets that dissolve instantly. They work really weel. We used them for our grandson and had no real problems. I guess teeting will go on for another year or so, then it will calm down. Talk to your doctor and see if you are allowe dto give him Ibuprofen, this will help with the gum irritation.

Dear Heather,

With my two kids, I would have never survived their teething without Motrin(if your child can take it) Also, it may be worthwhile to have the baby checked by your pediatrician in terms of other problems, including ear infections.

Otherwise, lots of cuddle time, icy teethers, biting biscuits(my kids thought they were great) Love and patience and take naps when they do, because you sacrifice your sanity without rest. Good luck and take care.

My mother always says that you can count on your child "teething and being miserable" until about the age of 12, or whenever they receive all their permanent teeth. My son was teething for a good year (starting around 4 mos), with never- ending drool that soaked him completely. He lived in bibs literally for 8 mos easily. A friend at work recommended homeopathic teething tablets (per her pediatrician recommendation with her own children). She had great success, so I tried them. They were a life saver! I made sure to have two to three bottles on hand in various places IE: diaper bag, medicine cabinet, etc. They disolve INSTANTATIOUSLY upon water--make sure your hands are dry (not sweaty)--so you won't have to worry about a young child choking--I used to give my son 2-3 tablets at bedtime and various amounts throughout the day, depending on how bothered he was. You can purchase these at any healthfood store and ALSO, I found them in most Walgreens---get the tablets, not the gel. They are all natural ingredients that help eliminate pain and discomfort--hope this helps you.--M. (Harrison is now 4)

Heather,

You should try teething tablets and tyenol before going to bed. My little one has been cuting 2 teeth at a time - and this seems to help him a whole lot and lets him get some rest. Teething tablets are wonderful. Don't rub the orajel on his gums - it makes the gums harder for the teeth to come through.

I am a married/working mom and have a 8 month old. I know how precious sleep is. (HA HA :) )

And you'll sleep better ;) Sometimes when my daughter is teething we change the texture of the food, gerbers or the ministars that they have work great.Good luck. Sylvia
