Hello everyone, I have a 4 month old baby girl who is starting to teeth. I know it might seem a little early but my oldest had 4 teeth by the time he was 4 months. I was lucky with him because he wasn't much of a fusser. My baby girl is very fussy and knawing on her hands like crazy. The worst time for her...and me is at night. She isn't sleeping well. Does anyone have any other remedies besides cool stuff for the gums and Tylenol? Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

the baby gum gell, anbesol?? sp?? Use a tiny amount and it numbs their gums. It works as long as you don't use a whole lot. The taste is AWFUL......but once it kicks in they are fine. I used it about 4 times a day and always at night before bed with my little ones.

good luck

Just wanted to add cold spoons, pedialyte popsicles and toothbrushs. I agree with the other posts... go homeopathic if possible but Motrin is much more effective than Tylenol. Good luck!

I know it sounds weird, but rib bones. I used to make a batch of bbq ribs for my husband and I then when we finished the rib we gave it to the boy who was teething. They were cool by then, of course. I think it was the texture and the savory-ness of the bones that made them happy. Lots of drool.

Hello T., My heart goes out to you and the baby& this is only the start of things to happen as you well know. We lived overseas when our children were born and was taught this trick by a wise doctor:
I have learned to use a soft cloth or a soft bristle toothbrush to rub the gums. This helps to sooth the sore gums and help the skin thin enough to let the teeth break through. It has worked with our children and the grandchildren so I hope it will be of help to you. Good Luck in with your adventure of parenthood- it truely will be the greatest achievement of your life.

We use a Baltic Amber necklace on our daughter and it has helped her teething pain tremendously. Apparently in Europe it is very common to use these types of necklaces instead of medicinal treatments. I order them in http://www.latvianamberstore.com/en/Baltic_Amber_for_Chil...

Both of my kids wouldn't bother with teethers, washcloths, or any of the usual things, but I put an ice cube in one of those little net bag thingies that you are supposed to put pieces of fruit etc.. so they won't choke anyway, they would sit & suck on that ice cube like crazy! They apparently liked the net against the cold ice feel. later I did the same when they began walking & got busted lips. knocks swelling right out along with any bleeding. Hope it helps...

Don't overdo Tylenol in a baby. It can overload the kidneys.

Try Hyland's teething tablets. Its homeopathic.
Or, I would freeze a dampened washcloth and let my kids chew on it. They liked it.

Or giver her a teething toy, for babies.

Our Pediatrician advised against those "numbing" gels. Because is can drip down the throat as well, and "numb" the throat and cause choking.

All the best,
Susan

Poor thing...my little guy got his first teeth at 4 months also. It is not fun! Some things that I think helped him were the net feeding thing (I think Sassy makes one) that I would put an ice cube in and when he got a little older I would put frozen fruit and also I would put a clean leather glove on and let him chew on that. Sounds weird, I know but he liked it and always seemed content.

A cold wet wash cloth from the refridgerator was always a good one in my home. My boys just chewed on it and seemed to get relief. All those fancy teething toys were a waste for us........the washcloth was the favorite :o)

Also, teething tablets helped in addition to motrin.

Poor little thing :o( Once it starts, It seems like they teethe forever!

I found Motrin worked loads better than tylenol, because tylenol just helps the pain, whereas the motrin actually helps reduce the swelling. You also give it less often. Check with your dr. for a good dose.

I bought the Girl Scout Shortbread cookies, much like a teething biscuit. My daughter loved chewing on the delicious buttery flavored cookie and eased her gums at the same time.

My son got his first teeth at 4 months too. I used the baby toothbrush that you put on your finger and I massaged the baby orajel onto his gums. He loved to chew on the toothbrush, it was very soothing to him. He hated teething rings or anything like that. We did use a baby washcloth that had one corner of it frozen. He was able to grab the washcloth and chew on the frozen end, which he seemed to enjoy also. We used Hyland's natural teething tablets several times a day and Tylenol at night. Good luck!

Look for all natural teething tablets. I know Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby carries them. I've also heard that Whole Foods carries them. They worked okay for my daughter, but when it got really bad I did use Tylenol, but I think the teething tablets drastically reduced the amount of times I used Tylenol.

Hylands teething tablets!!

Basically any problem you can think of when it comes to little kids...Look and see if Hyland's has a product for it. They are the best when it comes to kids medicines and they are all natural.

Also, I don't know why, but both my kids hated teething toys. Sounds wierd but both of them loved to chew on the rubber thing on top of infant tylenol. They never got the lid off, but would chew on that thing all day (under supervision only).

My baby teethed early too. What helped us was: Hyland's teething tablets (they're homeopathic...2-3 tablets) when it was that bad, infant Tylenol for nighttime when it finally got bad (infant Motrin for molars), the really flat not puffy chew toys and not frozen or cold at all, a cloth dipped in cold water to gnaw on LIQUID baby Ora-jel (not the gel kind) and soft, non-fuzzy blanket to gnaw on. All of these worked at different times. I used them all and we got through it including baby. When it was bad (and you can tell when it gets worse) I would use the infant Tylenol before bedtime so my baby would sleep better. The tablets were great during the day until my baby needed something stronger. Hope this helps!!!!

My daughter also teethed early. She got 2 teeth at four months, two more at six months, then took a 6 month break, and then seemed to get a tooth a month after that until they were all in!
So, I have one more vote for Hyland's Teething Tablets! You can get them at Rite-Aid, if you don't have a natural food store close by. My daughter loved them, I saw a dramatic change in her fussiness when I gave them to her, and even now at 3, I give them to her when she is fussy and they calm her down a bit. When she was an infant, I used to dissolve a few in a teaspoon of water and then use a dropper to give them to her. As she got a little older, I'd give her the tabs themselves because they melted the instant they touched her tongue. Also, another vote for ice cubes in the net-thingy. Another mom mentioned it; it's the thing marketed for fresh fruits pieces. I used to put a small whole ice cube, or even crushed pieces, in there, and my DD would gnaw and suck on that thing until it was all gone--and then fuss until she got another one! Another thing my DD liked was the teething toys that vibrated. I saw one at Safeway, of all places. It vibrates when you put pressure on it, so not only was it a great cause-and-effect toys, but the vibrations seemed to make her gums feel good, too.

Hyland's teething tablets are great! And so it Wellement's Gripe water. I would switch between the two during the day and give a dose of each right before bed and that was the only thing that helped my little guy. Tylenol wouldn't even help so that was never an option for us.

With those first few teeth, I had luck with a camomile-based product called Children's Teething Relief - it's available at Whole Foods. I've heard other moms recommend Camilia, which is also camomile-based and available at Whole Foods.

Homeopathic teething tablets worked wonders for my son. He also started teething around 3 month. I gave him ora-gel and he immediately started choking. I had to call the ambulance and I was told by the paramedic that this is common. Aparently if some gets down their throat it numbs the throat and baby doesn't know how to react. It was the scariest 15 minutes of my life. I also spoke with many moms who had the same problem. Now that he is older (9.5 months) I give him tylenol before his final nursing at night and he does well. Sometimes if he wakes in the middle of the night I will give him a cold rag to naw on and some teething tablets. Good luck.

Hi there,
We used Hyland's Teething Tablets for our son. He started teething at 5 months but didn't have is first tooth till 2 wks after his 1st birthday. So I know exactly what you are going through. The tablets are self desolving and you place them between the gums and cheek, or you can do as I did and put a tablet in my palm and place a drop or two of water on them and then rub the "paste" on their gums. These tables came highly recommended from several friends and family and worked really really well for my son. They are also, Homeopathic (100% natural) and I would say about 85% of the time my son would fall asleep within 15 minutes of the application, so they are great for night time and nap time as well.
They can be found at Walgreens, Longs and Safeway as well as other stores.
Good luck, hope this helps!
Take care,
S. J. Franz
