So Confused? - Lexington,KY

I recently stopped by birth control and haven't had a period in almost 2 months in about a week and a half. I have taken 3 pregnancy tests that have all been negative. I am very confused? How long after you get off your birth control does your body get back to normal and have a normal cycle? I just want to know about when this will all end... Thanks!

What can I do next?

It took me 8 weeks to have a period after stopping the pill. My doctor told me that up to 12 weeks they do not worry. After 12 weeks they can give you a shot to jumpstart things. I wouldn't worry. After my first period I got pregnant right away.

Hi G.,

The warning paper that comes with your birth control pill (the one that is written in such small type it can hardly be seen by the human eye, lol) says that it may take up to a year to get back to normal. If you are over the age of 30, it can be up to 10 years.

God bless!

COntact your doctor just in case, I know some women who were 5 months preg by the time test showed positive. Just never know.

Hi G.,
It took me about 6 mos to get back to normal after I stopped the pill. It takes a while for the hormones to leave your system completely, so don't be alarmed if you miss a period. If you miss two periods, you should contact your doctor.

It depends what method of birth control and how long you were on it.

With pills, your fertility can resume immediately but also can take several months. Just as it takes several months for your body to adjust to being on the hormones, it can take several months for your body to readjust being off of them.

With the shot, it can take several weeks to several months to regain fertility, and it can take several months for your body to re-adjust.

Stress (like worrying over if you're pregnant or when your period will come, or unrelated like financial stress) can also delay your period.

If you are concerned about it, call your doctor and discuss your concerns. You may also want to get a checkup to make sure there is no medical reason for the delay.

It took my body about a year (maybe a year and a half) to get back into its normal groove after being off the pill. It is very aggravating.

6 months. This gives it time to leave your body, that is if you have irregular periods.

Hi G.. I had the same problem when I stopped taking the pill a few years ago. It unfortunately took me almost a year to get my cycle back to normal. I talked to my doctor about it and she had to prescribe me provera to kind of jump start my period if I hadn't started on my own after about 45 days (not sure on the exact day it's been awhile). She always had me do a blood pregnancy test first just to make sure urine test wasn't a false negative. After doing this about 3 or 4 cycles my body finally seemed to straighten itself out. So I would give your doctor a call and see what they suggest. Good luck.

I'm in the same boat. Went off in March and still no period. I'm glad. Your doctor can give you meds to jump start your cycle again. Clomide should do it. Once you start ovulating again you'll be back on track.

Meanwhile, not ovulating is better for your body. It reduces your risk for ovarian cancer.

are you still nursing? or have you been? if so, many women don't have periods while they are nursing. It may take a month or two until your body gets back on track. If nothing else, give your nurse a call and see.

This happened to me years ago when I got off the pill also. I had to go to the dr. and he put me on a low grade fertility pill to start my cycle and regulate everything. I was trying to get pregnant at the time also.

was your cycle normal before when not on the pill? The pill forces your body into the cycle, and going off it could take up to 6 months to get back to normal, BUT.. it could also be a sign of something worse, and you should get it checked immediately. Get the test for ovarian cancer, besides the normal pap. They dont generally do that, and I had a friend that was missed in for almost 1 year. Be safe, be pro-active, and God bless.
