My 4 and a half year old repeats everything I say! I've told her to stop but I can't seem to get it to stick. Any suggestions??
She has been doing this for about a year and it seems to be just me she repeats.
Is this somthing new or has she all ways done this? Let me know I have different advice. If it's something new she is playing you and I would try acting like you don't hear her. Ask her something, if she repeats it ask her if she wants something like Ice cream. If she answers you right a way tell until you stop repeating what I say to you no Ice Cream. See if that works. Maybe try not to give her a reaction. She knows you will respond to her when she repeats you. This is just a thought.
Does she do this with everyone or is she just playing with you?
I would try two different tactics. The first one would be to ignore her completely when she is doing it. Make the statement that until she stops, you will not speak with her. Then proceed to ignore her. The second tactic is the eye for an eye trick. When she starts doing it to you, do not respond at first. Wait until she starts her own sentence and then start repeating her. Of course, with my daughter there was occasionally the negative comment when using this tactic something like "Mommy, your mean!" When this occurred, I substituted the "Mommy" for my daughter's name. She didn't do it very long and got the message quickly that it was quite annoying to be on the receiving end.
