Putting Objects up from Small Children

A person I know had a small child about 19 months old and was watching her 4 yr old neice. After bathing and diapering the baby the mother fell asleep. A commotion woke her up enough for her to yell at the 4 yr old to leave the baby alone and the mother went back to sleep. When she woke an hour later she changed a soaked diaper only to discover she was bleeding a lot. To make a long story short, after the children's hospital did their exams, procedures the 4 yr old neice was at the hospital and heard the doctor talking and stated on her own that she saw an ink pen in her diaper and when the baby screamed and the aunt yelled, the baby girl fell backwards thus ramming the pen inside her causing an inch long deep cut. I was just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences? Mother is torn.
I am the great aunt.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to those who responded. Mother is taking pain pills that make her sleep. We now have in place that when she feels "tired" the mom is to call someone to come take the children. This worries me and I will stearnly talk with her and take some actions. Mom needs more help than I was told about. Momma's mother (grandma who is a preacher)got daughter off the hook with CPS. I have broken all ties with this family!

I have an 18 month old and sometimes I watch my 4 year old niece. I hate to be judgemental but why was this person sleeping leaving these two small children unattended. I would never ever never sleep while my two played unattended. From the way this story is stated it sounds very suspicious to me. How could a pen ram inside the baby if she had a diaper on? Also every baby I know would scream if something was rammed inside them enough to cut them. My 18 month old and my 4 year old niece would wake me if something happend (not that I would ever ever ever be sleeping while they were unattended). This doesn't sound right to me.

No, I watch my toddler. I hope no one else has had an experience like this. I'm not sure what you are looking for here. If the doctors didn't call CPS, I would have. I hope to God she isn't allowed to watch anyone else's kids anymore!

My biggest concern would be the mother. What is she doing sleeping while such small children are up and running around?!?! You hear stories all the time of people sleeping while their kids are up and playing and horrible things happening. Then they get charged with child neglect or child endangerment. Just the other day a woman cooked dinner while her 14 month old was bathing. She said she only left him alone for 5 minutes, but he drowned. My son is 14 months and is never out of my sight!!

I am so sorry something like that had to happen to a small child. But what you said is a good example of why you need to be awake when you are caring for small children. No home is completely childproofed and those children were too young to be left unattended.

I'm hoping to the powers that be that no one else has a similar experience...why would this person you know fall asleep while the 4 year old and 19 month old were still awake? That's not watching...that's just plain irresponsible! I hope the mother is torn and I hope she thinks a little harder the next time she allows herself to doze while the safety of two VERY YOUNG children is in her hands. I'm sorry, but sleeping for an hour is not a luxury you can afford with children that young. She's very lucky nothing worse happened, that is was only an inkpen and not something even more dangerous.

The baby girl is at the age where she will grab at everything so anything that can hurt her should really be put up. Also, if the mother is falling asleep, the baby girl should be in her crib or a pack and play where she is safe as a 4 year old girl is unable to watch a 19 month old and take responsibility. And the 4 year old should also be somewhere safe. It wasn't long ago where a 4 year old boy got a hold of a lighter and started a fire while his dad was asleep... Anyway, the dangers of leaving children unattended are too numerous to risk them. I am not judging the mom here b/c I know how life can get and babies are fast with their hands. I would suggest though, that next time when she feels too tired to watch kids, to try and find someone else to watch them. This time they all got away with an injury that was relatively harmless. She might not be so lucky next time.

This whole story is disturbing. How would this pen get in the diaper? Did the 4 year old put it there? Someone is lying or not telling the whole story. Where did the pen go? And why in the hell did this woman leave a baby and 4 year old unattended? Why didn't she get up and check rather than just yelling at the child? Sounds like Children's Services may have to investigate. Don't know what your relationship is with this person, but sorry to say, it just sounds like neglect. Just read about the pain pills. These are very addictive for some people, in which the baby could be in serious danger. Keep your eyes open.

Mom can be charged with neglect when things like this happen on her watch. She cannot sleep in the daytime when her kids are up. I've never heard of anything like this, but 4 yr olds don't usually make up stories. The ER has to report any suspicious injuries.

Oh, that's just scary & sad. I actually have heard of girls falling on sharp-type objects. In the few cases I've heard of, all of the girls have been fine. But it's still quite serious & scary.

I don't have any advice other than prayer. I hope they all get what they need. The children need to be taken out of unsafe situations, whatever they may be. =(
