My husband and I are hitting a rough patch but both really want to save our marriage. Can anyone recommend a good marriage counselor in the Arlington/Mansfield area? Also while I am not against the idea my husband refuses to go to a religious leader so it needs to be someone outside the church.
Thanks you ladies always have the best info.

So What Happened?

Thanks to eveyone who responded. We have had a few sessions with Charles Yates and he has been great. My husband likes him and he definitely doesn't appear to choose sides but focuses on moving past the issues to solutions that work for us. He is not pushing his own agenda on us. I plan to look into some of the other ideas as far as books as well but haven't made it that far yet. Thanks so much to you all, we are making progress and part of that is because of the responses we got here so that we could get started moving forward.

Hey there S., I wish you the best in the healing of your marriage. Since you sound like you are not opposed to opening up your marriage through a bit of a religious pathway I will tell you my two saving graces. My Mommy group that I belong to is doing a Bible Study every other Weds morn and we are focusing on "The Power of a Praying Wife" by Stormie Omartian. It is a wonderful and powerful book that goes through his needs and his life and how you as his wife can better improve your life together, through knowledge and prayer. It is one sided in a sense but I am already seeing the power of it throughout our ladies and my own marriage. The other recommendation I have is "The Proper Care & Feeding of Husbands" by Dr. Laura Schlessinger. I loved this book and my husband and I both got a lot of good advice and good changes to our marriage out of it. If you would like any information on my Mommy group or my Monday Morn Bible Study group, please let me know. Both are located in the Mansfield area.

Hi S.,

Unfortunately, my marriage needed counseling too. We had 6 tragedies happen to us in one year. What Luck! Needless to say we both became depressed and neglected our marriage. We did a counseling session, but it didn't really help because all we did was talk about the problem and what caused it. We had already figured that out by yelling at each other. What we needed was what to do next?

I turned to a CD program by Mort Fertel. If you do a search on the internet for his name you'll find it. I did this program by myself without my husband. I followed the directions precisely. At first it was really hard, but it got easier as time passed. And within two weeks, my husband came home from work, kissed me like the movies, and said he was going to "rededicate his life to me." The program cost about $100, but it definitely saved our marriage. Good Luck L.

I can't recommend a counselor, but I can recommend two things . . . 1) The Weekend to Remember is coming to Grapevine over Valentine's Day weekend. It is religiously affiliated so not sure if that would fly but it might be worth looking into. and 2) It might be worth your time to pick up the book "The Love Dare". It is one-sided but I've been doing it and have seen a huge difference in both of us. Whatever happens, good luck!

Here is the best marriage counseling I have ever found....and it's in an inexpensive book:

"How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It"
by Patricia Love, Ed.D. & Steven Stosny, Ph.D.

I personally know several people whose marriages have been saved by this book (without any counseling). It gives people an entirely new perspective about the root causes of marital dissatisfaction and conflict. Put it in the bathroom, where he can read it without you watching. :)

Whether or not you see a counselor together (go on your own if he won't go), this book alone could turn things around. If he won't read it, it would still be greatly beneficial for you to read it alone. Resist the temptation to underline the parts that he really needs to read! Let him soak it in entirely from a third party source--not from you.

I teach communication at a major university, and I have incorporated the main messages of this book into my teaching. Every single class ends up with multiple students telling me that this totally improved their relationships, as well as their dealings with the opposite gender.

Mark Gungor Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage
check out his website he has books and dvds
He is a pastor but what he teaches is not religious.
He talks about how men and women are different and we shouldn't change that but find out why we do what we do and accept each other for who we are.
It was really really funny! I laughed so much I cried.
Good Luck
