Hello Moms -
Suddenly my 4 year old is waking in the middle of the night. Often more than once. He will scream and cry like I think something must be wrong and when I get there he will say things like, I wanted to give you a hug and a kiss, just wanted to tell you I love you, or make silly excuses like my light is too bright or not bright enough, turn my fan on or off, I need some water, etc ... you get the idea) sometimes he says he is having bad dreams ... Anyhow all excuses lead to parents with NO sleep.
Up until now he has been a GREAT sleeper since infantcy. I am at my wits end. I have taken away toys, tv, even his loveys for waking mom and dad at night. I took him to the dr. and all is fine ...I just don't know what to do. My patience is so thin and everyone in the house is feeling the wrath of cranky mom!!!
Any advice?

What can I do next?

There is NO SHAME in trying to get the house some sleep!

My almost 4 year old does almost the same thing. He wakes and comes to get in me but crawls in bed with me. Not saying this works for me or will work for you, but kids are smart. I just try to show him: Last night you were out of bed 3 times and you are very cranky today. Try to stay in your bed all night so you can get good rest and have a better day tomorrow. See, you slept all night long and are having a great day!
Anyway, everyone needs rest to function and DO NOT feel guilty for trying to deter this behavior!

Hello J.,

could something be waking him up? how about giving him a flash light and showing him that to save all the hugs and kisses until 7am. how about a 'white noise' machine? put a sippy cup w/ water next to his bed. good luck! something is spooking him. tell him you love him lots but mommies need to sleep or they'll be very cranky and tired all day. I told my kids. they laughed but they got the message (eventually). Hang in there.... (oh, make sure he's not getting any hidden sources of caffeine. also some allergy meds will mess up their sleep) ~C.~

First off, for shame on you for punishing your child for this!

My oldest daughter went through similar issues at about the same age. She was always a wonderful sleeper, but suddenly started having bad dreams, or seeing things in the shadows in her room, etc. I am not at all a parent who wants my children in my bed, but I made exceptions for her in these situations. Usually we would put her back in her bed when she fell asleep. Ultimately it works itself out. My daughter once again became a good sleeper and at age 14 still is! And all we could do is give her soothing words and explain how everything was OK and nothing was going to hurt her. It just needs to become your soothing mantra to your son.

In the end, I've learned that my daughter is extremely intelligent, imaginative and creative, and in hindsight I can only think that this bad dream phase was an early demonstration of her creativity, even at a subconscious level.

Hi J.,

I recommend a book to those with children having such issues. I know that it might be hard for some people to grasps this, but our children are indigo and crystal children that are coming into this world with more knowledge then we did. The book is called: The Crystal Children, by Doreen Virtue. It's a small book and easy to read and understand.

Please don't punish your child for doing this, He can't help it. I have a niece that did the same thing, it will stop once your understand and learn how to work with him. Leave a night light on for him, this might help.

Also when you put him to bed, ask the angels to protect him and that his room be fill with the While Light of Divine Love and Protection of God. See his room fill with the White Light and know that it's there when you ask for it. I hope this helps.
