Mystery Stomach Ache

I'm going to call our family doctor tomorrow, but was curious to know if anyone else has expereinced this. My seven-year-old son has been complaining of stomach pain on a regular basis. He has no fever, and his appetite seems largely unaffected. It also tends to flare up at "convenient" times, such as bedtime; however, while I'm suspicious of some instances, I do not get the sense he's completely inventing it. I've taken him to the doctor once a few weeks ago when it seemed particulary bad, and she thought he was constipated. (She eliminated appendicitis as a possibility.) Stool softeners don't seem to make any significant difference and I'm wary of randomly giving him medications anyway.

Tonight he said it hurts most when he drinks liquid, and I realized that for the last few days, at least, he has in fact been drinking less - and it' been HOT in Chicago. I questioned him and he said it doesn't hurt "worse' when he eats, but it does hurt more whenever he drinks. Has anyone had a child complain of this, specifically? The pain seems to be located in the lower abdomen, just above the groin - and it's not specific to to the left or right.

Any insight would be appreciated - thanks.

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for your thoughtful responses. We're going to try mild digestive aids for now - I picked up a pro-biotic for children and a holistic remedy for gas, also for children, at Whole Foods. Like a lot of kids his age, he is highly resistant to fresh vegetables, and really doesn't eat a lot of fiber. I'm also going to follow suggestions re monitoring intake of juice and milk, and try and give him mostly water for now. If that doesn't make a difference, we'll look into allergy testing and (gulp) possible parasites. Thanks again - this was all really helpful.

My daughter used to complain about belly aches and there was never any consistency to the pains. She had no other symptoms and her ped ruled out pretty much everything before referring us to a GI specialist. Even the GI specialist was baffled and all tests were negative. I ended up taking my daughter to a certified nutritionist who did a computer scan and we found out my daughter had parasites. We used a supplement to detox her body and within 4 days of starting the supplement she was no longer complaining. We've since worked on boosting her immune system and she's been pain free.

I would personally get him checked by an allergist/nutritionist as well as increase his water intake (tap is best not bottled!)
He doesn't sound like he's faking it--probably ignores it during fun times :)

My son had the same problem. We took him to test for sensitivities(similar to allergies). We found out he was allergic/sensitive to coconut! You would not believe how many things have coconut in it. Palm oil and coconut oil seem to be used in so many things! So, he stays away from coconut and he is stomach pain free. Good Luck. If you want the name of the place I went to test him let me know. I would really go this route or go to a certified nutritionist like Janet said before I did any invasive tests on your little guy.

Does it hurt more with certain types of drinks? You could try elimintating certain drinks from his diet just to see if it's milk and a lactose intolerance or maybe juice and the acid is upsetting his stomach.

Does your child go swimming regularly? If so, you may want to check the pool water for anything lurking in there.

Of course you have to rule out the possibility of physical problems, but some people have stomachaches that are directly related to anxiety and stress. As a child I had stomachaches all the time, and especially at night. I think that is a time when conscious or unconscious stress comes to the forefront, especially because bedtime can be a source of anxiety anyway, (going to bed all alone in the dark, etc.) I still get discomfort in the my stomach whenever stuff is "going on" in my life, just my nature. So this may not be the case at all with your child, but if you rule out other things you might consider it. Best of luck.

Let me first say, I am often the first to blow things off. I think my kid is moaning and groaning to be manipulative but I am inclined to think differently about your child faking it.

I think he may really need some relief. Has he been checked for a hernia, have you seen his (TMI) stool? Have you seen his urine output? When children are quiet and still they can often feel the aches and pains they ignore while playing or keeping busy.

Now, could it be that he is manipulating you? Sure! But, I would take him back to the doctor and have his Pediatrician check him out further. Better safe than sorry!!!

A very good friend of mine is an Allergist for North Shore University Heath System and she tells me that there is an increase of inflammation of the gut from irritants in our food. Now, does that mean that is what he is facing...NO...just an FYI!
