What do you mean by holds herself?
I am beside my self with what to do about my 5 year old daughter who holds her self? I have never experienced this before. Is there anyone out there with the same problems??
Thanks to a very helpful response we may have found the answer to all her holding. Thanks for you quick responses, its funny how a light bulb finally goes on....Thanks again

What do you mean by holds herself?
Are we talking about masterbation?
Is this in public?
Giving her lots of comfort and encouragement in life, also naps if needed, and other things like toys to hold is one way to help
It's very normal, just embarrassing in public!
If you make a fuss or try to tell them no - some children will do it more.
Is this the case here?
Don't make any value judgements about it - just distract her, mention that it's not good manners to do that?
See what happens.
Good Luck!

(Holding themselves) Is another term I guess. My grandaughter, called it the (pee-pee Dance! lol They get to busy or preoccupied, to stop what they are doing, and go to the bathroom,so they hold themselves, or dance around,to control their bladder. At least until they are either (Told) to go to the bathroom,or can't hold it any longer. If she still holds herself after she urinates, its out of habit,or she could feel comfortable, with that, as she has discovered she is able to better control her bladder that way.I wouldn't be overly concerned, but I would encourage her to not hold it,stop what ever she is doing and (GO)She'll get out of the habit. The best to you and your daughter
Do you mean touches herself? If so, research it online and you will see answers to your question. It is not only your child, believe me.
Good luck,

it sounds like a way for her to comfort herself. Does she also rock herself back and forth. or does she need to, to go to sleep.is there a possibilty of autism in the family?some children have repetative behaviors to comfort themselves from sounds that are too loud or overstimulation from another source.if this is a possibilty I recommend Tony Atwoods book "asperger syndrome" it is a wonderful book with other traits to look for.autism is now at a rate of 1 in 150 children
