No, but normally when I have gone out with a group of women, my action flicks always get shot down for chick flicks. So yeah, I've seen movies I wasn't looking forward to.
The sacrifices I make for friends. ;)
Then don't go, right?!?!
My SIL(age 37...lives alone) said this to my husband about a Johnny Depp movie coming out. This comment has made my head hurt.
Do people spend the money and time to see things just to see them, even when they don't WANT to???
Do you know of people (are one) who must see a movie if it has a certain actor/actress in it?
Feel obligated to see a movie to "not miss out" that is well known in society?
My sociological brain just wants to know....that's all. :)
I should add that she made the comment knowing she would be going by herself, or renting it on her own.
She said it like she was complaining about it! Lol. And, that's just her. Negative Nancy. My husband still talks about it.
We see very few movies each year, and almost never at a theater. Hubby says that if we are going to have a date night, we shouldn't just sit next to each other in silence. Love that about him!

Haha, I'm with you, if I am not interested in the movie, why waste the money??
And! movies come out to rent sooo quickly these days that I can wait the 3 months or so to wait for Redbox! Lol.
But that's just me.
Haha. this made me laugh. I wouldn't see any movie if I really didn't want to see it. Let alone pay an outrageous amount of money to watch in the theater.
I am one of those people who have to see a movie if it has a certain actor in it. Hence, I will watch "Dark Shadows" ( but wait til it is out on DVD) :) Who wouldn't want to watch a Johnny Depp movie?? :)
If I have NO INTEREST in seeing a movie - I don't go see it.
I don't go to movies "just because" an actor/actress is in it. That's just lame. But then again, I don't idolize celebrities like many in our society do. That's why people do this - I've GOT to see this or I MUST buy this because "x star" is in it, owns it or backs it.
I worked in movie theaters back when I was in college, and saw a *lot* of stinkers, lol. Since then, I've become much more selective.
I had no overwhelming interest in seeing "The Help" last summer, but went with my SIL and her friends, and my daughter. Really enjoyed it, so that was a pleasant surprise.
But I still haven't seen "Titanic" :-)
Nope. If I'm not interested in it, I am not only spending my hard-earned money on it, I'm not spending my well-deserved time away from work on it either!
BTW--I don't particularly care if I've seen everything up for an Oscar, either. As a matter of fact, I don't think there's been a single year yet that I've seen each film that was nominated for Best Picture & I'm a HUGE movie fan, worked at movie theatres for years!
No, I don't feel obligated to do or see anything I don't want to. I do like him as an actor but I won't be running out to see this latest movie. It looks beyond stupid. =)
Interesting question. I rarely go out to movies these days; I'd rather enjoy them at home where I can pause it as needed.
At this point in life, I won't even rent or borrow a movie from the library if I'm not interested in it. A few months ago I was watching a movie and the supposed 'hero' was such a pig that I stopped it 20 minutes in.
I don't miss out on those movies everyone else is talking about. We all have different tastes and I don't always care for the big blockbuster flicks others like.
I would have "heard" this as an attempt to make/sustain a conversation.
To answer your questions...
The last movie I saw in the theater with my husband was the first Transformers movie. The last movie I saw with my son was Beauty and the Beast in 3D. We don't go to the movies very often because it's really expensive (especially when you add in a babysitter). They come out pretty quickly On Demand.
We only pay to watch something we think we would enjoy. Having said that, I am "one of those people" when it comes to books... I HAVE to finish reading a book even if it's boring and crappy. Don't ask me why. I don't know. My husband asks me every time I read a boring book why I didn't just put it down!
sounds like this lady was lonely and maybe could have said "i'm a big fan of J Depp and I plan on seeing this movie but i'm not sure i'll love it as much as i have loved his previous movies, what about you do you enjoy Jonny D?"
That said, what i've seen of the Pirates of the caribean I did NOT like, But I think He would be hilarious in Dark Shadows and am considering paying Way too much and even getting fat buying pop corn just to see this movie.
Of course some people see movies just because they're reviewed in a favorable way or because of the actors or because it's been nominated for an oscar. Whether or not one goes depends on their values. If they value having seen a movie for whatever reason even tho they know they won't like it, they're going to see it.
To each, his own.
Nope - I rarely spend on movies I want to see, I have a hard time putting out all that money when I know I can wait a while for redbox and rent 10 movies for the price of a ticket for one, and candy, drinks and popcorn are cheaper at home! I will however bite it every once in a while to take the kids to seee something they want to see.
I won't go to see a movie just because a certain actor or actress is in it, I wait for the reviews by my friends and family whom I trust.
I will take someone, grandchild or other family member or friend to see a movie, even if I don't want to see it, IF I promised them i would.
I recently went with my family to see The Avengers. I did not care for it too much however that could also be due to my lack of seeing any of the previous movies associated with the characters. We went mainly due to our daughter, 8, wanting to see it and of course she loved it.
I however am looking forward to Dark Shadows, the aforementioned Johnny Depp movie. I love his acting style but what makes me really want to see it is it is a Tim Burton movie. I've an affinity for all Tim Burton films. I however do not ever feel obligated to go and see a movie, read a book, or attend any other social event due to the hype surrounding it.
Usually when I say that it's because 1. I am taking the kids to see a movie or 2. It's hubs turn to choose!
So yes I have felt obligated to see movies but it's out of my hands at that point.
We typically wait for Redbox or Voodu to watch movies. So then if I don't want to watch I find something else.
Yes it's a waste of my hard earned money.
Uh...no....my time is more valuable than that!
I made the mistake of "renting" a movie once from the Redbox just because I LOVE the actor that played in it. It was called "Buried" with Ryan Reynolds. O' my gosh...........................by far the worst movie I had ever seen. I will never do that again.
I haven't been to a movie theater in probably over a decade! Way to expensive and cold! I wait for it to show on On Demand or Netflix. But I do not watch a movie I am not interested in because it has a certain actor/actress in it or because everyone else has seen it. I only watch what interests me!
My husband and I usually see less than half a dozen movies in a year (even before we had kids, it was a rarity). We do have netflix and get dvds from the library for our "movie night" each week, so I've seen several that I probably wouldn't have gone out of my way to see just because we wanted something to watch.
I will agree that it was an odd thing to say and is a strange thing to do, but there are lots of people out there who regularly have me scratching my head because they do/say things that make no sense to me.
I do watch movies with my favorite actress in them. And truthfully I have not seen them all and don't plan on it. Not that they are bad movies, I just don't have movie time like some people do.
No way, I don't spend money if I don't want to!! I haven't seen (and definitely don't want to see) any of those Twilight, Hunger Games type movies...and just about ever other human being has.
Nope, I don't go to see anything that I don't want to see. Let me take that back. I get free movie passes and use them to see something that I might not ordinarily see. That's it.
We are taking my mom to see the Johnny Depp movie, Dark Shadows, on Saturday as her birthday/mother's day treat since that's what she wants to do. Luckily I usually enjoy Johnny Depp movies, so I actually want to go.
I dont, however, want to see the Avenger's, but hubby already bought the tickets so I'm stuck. Oh well.
Usually, if i don't wanna go, I don't.
I don't feel obligated to go to the movies to see something because it's popular, if it doesn't intereste me. I am more likely to add something to my Netflix queue though because it's a new release, eventhough I may be only mildly interested. I don't watch anything if I have no interest at all.
However, if I start a book, I often feel like I should finish it. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
There aren't a lot of things our 17- and 20-year-old sons still want to do with us, so I will occasionally go to a movie, like the Avengers, that they want to see. (I remember nearly losing my mind at the Pokemon movie when they were little!)
But other than that, no. My husband and I are usually in agreement on what we like to see--which isn't much nowadays. We do have some favorite actors, but won't go just to see them.
I have problems sitting still through a movie. So we only see them if we can rent them for free at the library.
Well, I HAD to finally give in and see the Notebook. So glad I did. Also, Twilight. I wasn't looking forward to watching them and didn't expect to love them but there was so much hub bub about them I gave in and am so glad I did.
I have been guilty of going to see a movie because I like the leading actor or actress. I iwll see just about any Denzel movie.
I also see things I don't want to for my family. Do you think I was just jonesing to go see RIn TIn Tin or Reel Steele? lol But whatever, my little boy loved it. My husband has his taste in movies and there are things we go see that I am not looking forward to seeing, but I always enjoy myself anyway.
When I was younger I used to go to the movies all the time, even if it was an okay movie. But now I'm pickier and only go to ones I really want to see. Sometimes I don't even bother renting them unless I truly want to see it.
We are freaks.
We never, never, never see movies (in theater or on demand or redbox or whatever) so the urge to see something cause there is a famous actor - nope - not gonna get me. People literally stare at me like I have 2 heads when I say we don't watch movies. Nothing against movies - go for it if you love it - but they just don't do it for me. TV either - we watch 3 shows (The Office, Amazing Race, Stewart/Colbert) and that's about it.
That said - I decided to see Hunger Games (last movie prior to that - Idaho Spring with Ed Helms about 1 year and a half ago) and was SO DISAPPOINTED.
The movie was not bad - but it wasn't good - and reinforces my belief that books I love should remain books. :-)
To each his own...
