JFF: Let's Talk Movies

Just curious what your top 3 favorite movies are. My husband & I were chatting about it tonight & I couldn't come up with 3! I'm not a movie person though. I will rarely watch a movie more than once unless it's a tradition (certain movies at certain times of the year). I typically only go to a theater if it's something my husband or kiddos have been really anticipating & they ask me to join/take them. When we watch movies at home I'm usually doing something else while the movie is playing; i.e. designing things on the computer, crocheting, writing, planning menus, etc...
My husband on the other hand, he loves movies! He'll re-watch them multiple times if it's something he truly enjoyed. He enjoys seeing them at the theater with the huge screen & stereo system.
So, out all the movies in the world the only one I will reliably sit down & watch & enjoy: Monty Python & the Holy Grail.

What are your favorites?

So What Happened?

Thanks for playing along with me guys! You reminded me of some movies that I have enjoyed over the years (Grease, Shawshank Redemption, Color Purple). I probably watched Dirty Dancing a hundred times when I was a teen. Footloose was actually based on my hometown (and they have a festival every year now to celebrate it). I do enjoy almost every PIXAR movie (must be the graphic artist in me).

So many people mentioned Princess Bride – that's one of my husband's favorites!

@Isn'tthisfun? - Jungle Book is good – the graphics are really well done – I did go to the theater with the kiddos for that one.

@J.C. - don't judge but I actually fell asleep the first time I tried to watch Les Miserables! All my friends were going on about how amazing it was & I couldn't keep my eyes open – I did eventually sit through it :-)

Oh – confession time – all my nieces love that they can get me to watch a movie (of course while doing something else) if it's about cheerleading (think: Bring It On or Fired Up) or getting high (think: Half-Baked). I find those movies absolutely hilarious – probably because they remind me of so many people I know. :-)

Hope everyone has a lovely Friday tomorrow!

There are a few movies where if I'm flipping channels and they're on, I can't do anything but stop and watch. Steel Magnolias is one, Dead Poets Society is another (the recent SNL skit from that reminded me of how much I LOVE that movie), and Shawshank Redemption pulls me in as well.

I could never name just 3, and it would really depend on my mood or what we've recently watched. We are a big movie family. We enjoy watching movies together. Most Friday nights are "movie night" in our house.

I love movies that are part of a long series. I like to see the adventure continue. So I would say:

Star Wars
Star Trek
Harry Potter
Indiana Jones
Back to the Future
North and South
North and South Book II
(but not North and South Book III - terrible movie!!!)
The Blue and the Gray
All of those have at least 3 movies (or 3 parts in the mini series) in the franchise.

I am also a child of the '80's (college in the '90's) so:
Top Gun
Dirty Dancing
Three Men and a Baby
Adventures in Babysitting
Circle of Friends
The American President
While You Were Sleeping
Pretty Woman

I can't name just 3! There are just so many great movies out there!!!

Interesting. I don't really have *favorite* movies, either. I mean, I have lots of movies that I thought were great. And a fair number that I have seen more than once via the kids watching it as they have gotten old enough to enjoy it (came out before they were born, or when they were toddlers or whatever), or seasonal movies. But I don't have any that I would BUY so that I could pull it out and watch it multiple times.

A few I have seen multiple times (come on TV while I was folding laundry, or was sick, and I was scrolling and came across it, and didn't turn it off until its was over) are Pretty Woman, Ransom, Braveheart, Princess Bride. I'm sure there are others, but that's all the comes to mind right now.

One I have purposefully watched a second time (and seen like the above list multiple times) is Steel Magnolias. Really love it.

The rest are probably kids/animated films. The Incredibles is fabulous. Finding Nemo. The first Toy Story. Oh, and all the latest superhero films. I've enjoyed those with my teen kiddos. Captain America. Iron Man. Thor. The Avengers. Winter Soldier. Captain America: Civil War. Wolverine. X-Men. and so on.

But if you just want a list of something new to put on your list... there are tons of movies that I could recommend. I'm not big into RomComs, so there aren't many of those on my list of recommendations. Date Night is one. When Harry Met Sally was another.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Bridge of Spies
The Nice Guys
(just in the last year... I know Spies is older, but we just saw it on Netflix last week.)

I still want to go see Jungle Book.

We actually own the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and the Indiana Jones box set. Bought them more for the kids than for us (they were too young for LOTR when it was initially released, and weren't born when IJ came out. They LOVE them and have watched them on DVD multiple times).
---
ETA:
I have found a few that my kids like that I also enjoyed, that my kids might rank in their top 15.
Besides Indiana Jones...

The Breakfast Club
Ferris Beuller's Day Off

(My son is 17... LOL)

ooh LOVE THIS!!!

Princess Bride!!! Hello! My name in Inigo Montoya. You killed my father - prepare to die!

Hunt for Red October Some things in here don't react too well to bullets.

Galaxy Quest By Grapthar's Hammer you shall be avenged!! HOLD PLEASE!! NEVER GIVE UP!! NEVER SURRENDER!!

Goldfinger - no Mister Bond. I expect you to DIE!! We do like many of the Bond movies. The last two have been disappointing to me.

The Bourne Series - didn't really like the last one - but it was still OKAY.

Star Wars (not the new ones)

Steel Magnolias

My Chauffeur (this is a "B" flick - Sam Jones (whom I love) and Deborah Foreman - this is "MY" movie when I need to giggle.

Flash Gordon (yes. I love Sam Jones)

Scorpion King (ooh my word....Dwayne Johnson is just....well - he's just!!)

Sliding Doors - while I don't like Gwynth Paltrow outside of movies? I really liked this movie.

I have more...but I know you asked for 3!!! SORRY!!

I love movies. I like to see lots of movies, but I don't like to watch a movie I have already seen. I like long, epic, historical type movies like Braveheart, Kundun, Dancing with Wolves, Schindlers List, Judgment at Nuremburg, Ghandi, The Last Emperor, The Last Samurai, The Patriot, Apocalypto, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven, Mongol, Hotel Rwanda etc. I like any sort of apocalyptic movie, be it zombie apocalypse or otherwise. I also like the dystopian theme (The Giver, Handmaids Tale). I enjoy vampires (Interview with a Vampire, Twilight), blood and gore (Wrong Turn), comedy (Seth Rogan), musicals (Grease), even the odd sports movie (Field of Dreams) and some science fiction (Star Trek). If I am in the right mood I will enjoy a chick flick romance. I do watch some "seasonal" movies such as The Sound of Music and It's a Wonderful Life.

My all time favorites are Grease and Forest Gump. I don't have the patience to sit for a movie so we seriously NEVER go to the theater. If I watch a movie, it is because I am doing something in the living room. I love classic movies.
Usually, I will get a dvd from the library or Redbox and never even get to watch it unless the kids are watching and then I never see the whole thing at once.

I don't know if I can pick just three because there are numerous movies that I watch over and over.
Any movie based on a comic book
The Indiana Jones movies
The Die Hard movies (or anything where Bruce Willis blows sh** up)
James Bond movies
Independence Day
The Men in Black movies
Any Coen brothers movie
The Jason Bourne movies
Any movie based on Greek or Celtic mythology
The Mummy movies
Any movie based on a Stephen King book
The Lord of the Rings movies
Star Trek movies
Any movie based on a Michael Crichton book

There are MANY more, but I've already gone way past three.

Gone with the Wind
The Color Purple (just watched it again)
Scarface

I have seen recent movies, but I usually watch them with my daughter. For myself, I go through phases of different actors. I will almost always watch a Michael Douglas, Robin Williams, or Johnny Depp movie. I refuse to watch Jim Carrey or Steve Martin.

I agree with so many of the movies below!! I would add the old classic musicals- Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Oklahoma, Brigadoon, I love those! On the opposite end of the spectrum, I love thrillers and classic horror- The Shining, Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street. And '80's fantasy like Ladyhawke, Legend, the Dark Crystal , the Neverending Story. And a combination of those last two genres, the Seventh Sign!
Love movies :)

I LOVE movies and so does my husband!

I agree with many of the choices below - I do like the political ones like The American President and Guarding Tess.

I also like a lot of the classics, like the Tracy/Hepburn movies (Desk Set, Adam's Rib) and many of the Cary Grant films that went back and forth between comedy and drama. His Girl Friday is a tour de force of rabid fire dialogue and double entendres, which were hard to get past the censors in those D.. Those are interesting too from the standpoint of women trying to be taken seriously in a man's world. Helpful for our daughters to see, to learn while laughing.

I like period pieces too, like Sense & Sensibility, Emma, and so on.

These are great times to connect with your kids and discuss various issues when they occur to other people in a fictional setting, so do consider putting down the crocheting now and then and joining the crowd!
