"Hip Pain After Giving Birth"

Hey ladies!! Two months ago I had my second child and about two weeks ago I noticed the pain in my hips were getting worse. It happens whether I've been sitting for 5 minutes or for an hour (after nursing). I'm having trouble walking normally, I can't twist or turn in certain directions, my leg seems to be turning in when I walk, and there is a muscle in the back of my leg, above where my knee bends that feels "pulled" from the leg turning inward.
When I was pregnant with my first child, I can sort of recall reading something about women having issues like this after giving birth due to all the stretching, etc. that occurs. However, I can not recall what it is called, or find any solid info on the subject. I'm going to call the doctor Monday, but wanted to do a little research before I go. If anyone has experienced this or knows what it is called, I would greatly appreciate any info you may have. Thanks in advance!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Great news!! No hip replacement surgery before the age of 40!!! YAY!! (I'm making a joke because I was really afraid something was going to be seriously wrong!!) I saw my PCP who referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. They took an X-ray and everything is fine. He chalked it up to having two kids, called it tendonitis, and prescribed physical therapy. Thanks ladies!!!

I think you might want to consult a chiropractor.
With both of my pregnancies, I had problems with my hips rotating out due to the added weight of the babies and I had problems afterwards as my body tried to readjust to not carrying that weight anymore.

I couldn't have made it through without my wonderful chiropractor. It made all the difference in the world for me.

It's worth a try. You may experience great relief. I know I did.

Best wishes.

I believe that joints and ligaments are looser when pregnancy hormones are present. This is the body's way of moving to make room for the pregnancy and birth. Give it some time to resolve itself. Probably talking with your gyn might give you some insight before you go running to an orthopedic doc.

Hi, sounds like sciatica. I had it after my 1st child, but not my second. So you never know, pregnancy affects us differently each time. Mine went away on it's own after a few weeks. Congrats on the new baby!

I had the same thing happen to me. I don't know what causes it, but mine is finally starting to resolve itself and he is now 13 months old. My doctors dismissed it, but it I would still check it out and let us know what you find out from the doc when your go please!

Being pregnant and giving birth 'later in life' gave me all kinds of joint problems because of the way our ligaments stretch with pregnancy/birth, and there's no way to shrink them back. My chiropractor has done wonders with my neck/back on a long term basis, and with my hips/jaw since my last pregnancy. Good luck!

Childbirth messes us up.
I'm sure it's temporary, your frame is doing the opposite of "growing pains".
Chiropracter is a good suggestion tho, an adjustment and a suggestion on some certain exercises or stretches will probably get you back to normal in no time.

I say CHIROPRACTOR! I had pretty bad hip pain during and after all 3 of my pregnancies. It became the "new normal" for me... until after my third was born and then my low back got bad too.

I went regularly for 6 months, and it totally fixed a ton of my problems!

(I'm a healthy weight and very active - so it really was an alignment problem).

Had the exact same thing happen to me after giving birth. When i asked my doctor he told me that when ur body is prepping for the birth it isnt uncommon to pinch a nerve....I would still call and ask to be seen but I dont think its serious...We go thru alot in labor, I wouldnt expect us to go back to normal immediately

A chiropractor helped me after I had my second baby. I would definitely try that.

Make sure you ask for xrays. I think it's important to rule out a problem that could show on the xray.

Good luck!

Welcome to mamapedia!! CONGRATULATIONS on your second child!!!

Sounds like a trip to the chiropractor is warranted. Sounds like you could have an inflamed sciatic nerve.

IF your leg is swollen - I would go to the doctor immediately as it could be DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR. So I would talk to a chiropractor FIRST - as TO ME - it sounds like a sciatic nerve problem. I know that I had a lot of sciatic problems after my babies were born. The chiropractor helped me in soooo many ways!!
