I am 6 weeks pregnant and have been having low back pain that is more painful at times and then subsides and radiates into my legs on and off for about a week. Today my back hurt more than normal. I am such a worrier and I never had this with my first child. Has anyone else had this and is it normal? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Is the pain in one area or is it all over? I had a very sharp stabbing pain in my lower right side that radiated to my entire back around 5-6wks and my OB was concerned that it was a tubal pregnancy. Fortunately it was a cyst that was rupturing/had ruptured due to implantation/growth of our babies (twins). I didn't have any other symptoms that classically indicate a ectopic pregnancy but my OB was still nervous enough to order an ultrasound. I don't want to scare you but I would definitely check in with your Dr. just to be safe. Best of luck!

If it is on the sides, it could be your sciatic nerve. I had that problem a lot with my son, mostly the first half of my pregnancy. I would be walking and suddenly get a pain and my leg would just give out, and then the pain would last for days after that. What you described doesn't sound like the right area to me (sciatic nerves are on each side, right above your hips). My cousin had back pain around that point and they were worried about a tubal pregnancy, because that is about the point that the baby has grown big enough to cause problems and pain, but she had and ultrasound that showed it wasn't. I would definitely see your Dr either way. They found nothing wrong with my cousin. I had cramping pains through my whole pregnancy that worried me, but most the time it was nothing (I had complications in the end that caused cramping, but that was bad enough that I knew something was wrong). Good luck, I hope everything works out for you! Definitely at least talk to a nurse and see if they want to see you for an ultrasound. It will ease your mind, and if there is a problem, they can catch it fast.

It sounds like sciatica. I had it with both of my pregnancies. Not much fun and not a whole lot you can to about it. Tylenol and rest are about it if you don't want to try the chiropractor.

I had it w/ my last one, but it was so bad I had to go to the Chiropractor. I had pulled something in my lower back and had to get taped up. It started just like lower back pain you get from standing too long but when I bent over to "flex and stretch" it, it got worse. I was in pain for about 3 weeks and then I was fine. I was about 6 weeks when it happened so I know exactly what you are talking about and it also radiated to my legs a bit. I would let your doc know about it if it continues or you can see a Chiro for it.

If it makes you feel any better, I had more back pains with my second child than with the first, and of course I too was very worried about every little pain that I had, but didn't have with my first.
I was always told it was because my body had been through pregancy already and many of those ligaments etc. have been stretched before, so the pains are more than with the first.
I had some major sciatic nerve issues with my pregnancies, I remember several times I would have such a sharp pain, I would drop to my knees. Maybe you are having some sciatic nerve pinching going on. I would try to keep stretching to keep your muscles loose.
If you are really concerned something doesn't feel right, go with your gut feelings and see your doc. or a chiropractor, I know of a great one in Elk River that specializes in family and pregancy care.

Hello,
It sounds like you are having problems with your sciatic nerve! I had this with my prgnancy. If it is a sharp pain that goes down your legs I am pretty sure that's what it is. There's no harm to the baby, just painful! I went to the chiropractor for mine and it helped a lot! Of course, if you are really worried about it, I would talk to your doctor.
