I wouldn't be worried about the magnets near head/brain, but the big concern I would have would be if a baby ingested the magnets.
I recently bought the No Slippy Hair Clippy for my six month old daughter. They are FANTASTIC and stay in very well. (I bought large ones and she cannot swallow them.) They are lined with velvet on both sides, but the reason why they are "no slippy" is because they have a magnet inside the clip. The magnet is glued to the felt and cannot come off. If anyone is familiar with these clips, do you know if the magnet is hazardous to my infant's head/brain? I'm going to see the doctor in a couple of days so I'll ask him about this. Does anyone have any recommendations for other brands of clips that stay in just in case? I'm looking for fully lined velvet ones preferably the "alligator" clip type not the snap ones. Thanks for your suggestions!
I asked the pediatric neurologist and he said that the No Slippy hair clippy's magnet posed NO THREAT at all to my baby's brain/head. He said the magnet was totally insignificant. The hair clips that I buy her are the big ones so she cannot swallow them. In fact, they stay so well on her head, she can't even pull them off. I also don't leave her unattended with the clips on (just in case) --for example, when she's in the car seat and I'm driving. I'm very happy with these clips. Thank you for all of your comments!

Dear Kathy,
I don't think you need to worry about the magnets harming your babies brain. Swallowing them may be a different matter.
My daughter's hair was fine and thin. A clip or barrette with any weight at all to it would just slide out.
I made all of her hair pretties with ribbon and little silk rosettes. I stiched a strip of velcro closed on one end and attached it to the back of the hair pretty. The velcro worked great. Even for little pony tails.
That kid left the hospital with something stuck on her head. She had a ribbon or something of some sort in her hair every day. And hats. She loved wearing hats. Girls are so fun!
I've never even seen the hair clips you mentioned.
But I don't think the magnets will be strong enough to do any harm to your baby's head.
The only thing that you have to be aware of with any magnet and children is that if they swallow more than one, the magnets may stick to eachother internally and cause SERIOUS complications. A majority of children need surgery to have them removed before they cause damage to the digestive tract. As a rule, it is best to keep magnets of any type away from children until they know not to put things in their mouths.
Please don't over worry about magnets. We are around them every day, in every way, from toys to purses closures etc. In regular every day quantities they are not harmful. The biggest worry is your daughter getting it out of her hair and choking or sticking it up her nose.
Hi Kathy,
I think the danger in any kind of clips is that of a choking danger. your little girl probably puts everything in her mouth right now. If she were to remove the clip, she cold easily choke.

I wanted to add to the swallowing part. I read that some magnates (although I'm sure the ones one the clips are too small for this) could break and go down two different parts of the body and cause problems.
If you are not satisfied with any of the answers that you got you could contact the woman at Safemama.com, I'm sure they would have an answer.
Hi, Kathy
The "no slippy" brand is very popular because they are 'no slippy' but in regards to your question about the hazards of the magnet, the jury seems to be divided on that one. On one hand there is no scientific evidence to prove that it is hazardous but there are some people who worry about placing a magnetic field right next to your babies brain. I'm one of the latter. Which is why I make my own for my daughters and use a different non-slip grip. Aside from the 'no slippy' brand there are other brands that used magnets as well such as Bugalug but have changed to using a silicone based grip. When it comes down to it, its more of a choice of preference or comfort than anything.
Congratulations on the new baby. Enjoy every moment with her. They grow too fast!
Regards,
K.

Hi Kathy,
magnets are safe. My family sleeps on magnets and wears them on a regular basis.
It has a calming effect.
Have a great day.

I don't know if they can hurt her head or brain but they can be very dangerous if she swallows them. I have seen so many magnetic toys for small children recalled I would be reluctant to use then on an infant.
