I have a eight month old that in the last couple weeks, noticed that every time I change his diaper he pulls at his genitals to the point of getting an erection, and crys when I replace the diaper. Is this normal?

K.,

Yes, this is normal! I have eight-month-old twin boys, and they both go for themselves as soon as the diaper comes off. Of course, this makes changing a soiled diaper lots of fun! I have to laugh at how early boys become fascinated with their "stuff". Such is the life with boys!

Welcome to the world of boys! Wish I could tell you it stops, but once they find it, they never let it go! With my 3 y.o., I have just told him that is something he does in private, not with other people around, and only in his bedroom. I don't want to turn it into a "bad" thing. Have fun!

Hi K.:

LOL---You need not worry about this. Really. It is a natural process in his growth. He is becoming curious to the other extensions to his body. He is processing that when he pees, it comes from this unknown (unfamiliar) place. My son did this and I knew it was a natural process in his growth. And for future reference, all boys, adolescents and teens will do this too but for other reasons. My only suggestion is to not place the pamper on him when he is erect. He may be stimulated still and this may feel odd. Give him a minute to calm down and then place the pamper on him. You may try distracting him with some of his toys and then he will focus on that instead. It's normal.

That is so funny! My son found his at about the same time. I told my mom about it and she started laughing and said it's totally normal and from now on I'll be saying often in public, "Stop touching yourself!" Lol! Boys will be boys!
