My daughter has had a pretty bad case of an ear infection. Well the medication she is on is causing diarrhea, which lead to a diaper rash/yeast infection. My question is.... what possibly do you think would help ease the pain.. I am using a fungal cream for the yeast infection. I have given her tylenol for pain.. I have soaked her in plain water.. What could I possibly use in the bath water to help her with this.. She is in pain every time she has a bowel movement or urinates. The dr. just tells me to use the fungal cream.. Thank you
Thank you all for the wonderful advice. It is finally gone. Just alittle red still but all clear. Thank you

I had the same problem w/my daughter when she was younger. Unfortunetly, you really can't do much. The one thing that seemed to help my daughter was to not keep a diaper on her at all times and let her 'air dry' because touching her also irritated the area. Also, look at the kinds of foods you are giving her. A lot of fruit, such as oranges and other foods w/high amounts of acid will also irritate her when she poops it out.

A., I would try using either Butt Paste or regular vaseline on her bottom. When giving her a bath you may want to try Aveeno and let her soak in it. My son used to get bad rashes all the time and I used butt paste all the time and if he was bleeding a bit I would use vaseline. Aveeno really helped him as well b/c it would sooth his skin and give him some relief as well. I think they make some Aveeno now for infants. Let me know if this helps you.

My son would go from fine to bleeding with in 2 hours on his butt. I use Resinol ( it is a cream they use on bed sores for elderly people) it is the only thing that ever fixed the bottom. I went to 3 dr appointments, 2 er visits, and 3 dermatologist appt, for a pharmicist to tell me about it. as far as the yeast infection.. you can use apple cider vinger in the water and give her acidolpholous ( could be spelled wrong) you can get it @ health food stores, or the pharmacy. The health food stores have a baby form. they both work wonders.

I have two daughters - 3 & 1. Both have had terrible diaper rashes around the time they were teething. After several prescriptions, my pediatrician finally suggested an OTC cream called Super Dooper Diaper Doo. Funny name, but it really works. I used to be able to get it at Target, but I noticed in the last few months that they have stopped carrying it. You may try to call some places with pharmacies (Osco, Walgreens, etc) and ask if they carry it. Good luck!

Hi A.,
Sorry to hear about the rash. That is so awful. My sons all had terrible diarrhea when they were cutting teeth and had diaper rash that bad. My youngest is now 12, so I don't know if you can get it anymore, but I used plain zinc oxide. I used to slather it on really thick to keep the urine and feces from touching the rash as much as possible. Call your pharmacy and see if they still carry it. A friend of mine swore by a product called "Udder Balm" don't know if you can still get it or not either. Something else you could try, if the others aren't available is plain Argo cornstarch, sounds bizarre I know, but it does help.
Take care!

When my daughter used to get diaper rash all the time, her doctor said to mix vaseline with zinc oxide (the main ingredient in diaper rash creams) and thoroughly coat the dipaer area. You can buy plain zinc oxide at various pharmacies by just buying the store brand. He said the biggest problem with diaper rash is parents don't put enough cream on. After the diaper rash/infection clears up, continue to put a thin layer of vaseline on, and she won't get diaper rash again.

The most important thing to do is buy a diaper rash cream that has the highest percentage of Zinc Oxide that you can find. (look on the back label)
Creamy Desitin, Beaudreaux's Butt Paste and others work okay if your child doesn't already have a rash.
But if the rash is really red, bleeding or the baby cries and shakes when you try to clean them up, you need to make sure you use Regular Desitin or Walmart's brand (Equate) of Diaper rash cream. They are the only two I have found in our area of town that have 40% Zinc Oxide. (creates a skin barrier)
The Walmart brand, Equate, is by far the cheapest, at $1.47 a tube and is less than half what Desitin Original costs. ($3.47)
If the diaper rash persists, you can call your doctor and demand (nicely, but firmly) a prescription strength diaper rash cream. They can give you one, and should if this doesn't clear up soon.
Hope your baby feels better soon.

whenever your daughter is on an antibiotic always stuff her full fo yougert. That is the best thing to do so she does not get yeast infections. It kills the bacteria that grows and makes for much easier time with antibiotics. Then there is a cream that you can buy at Wal Mart. It is called BUTT PASTE. It is really good. Also oatmeal bath and also Aveeno makes this great bath soak stuff for that reason. Good luck and i feel your pain. That is how my son was.

There is a good bacteria that helps with digestion and diaper rashes. It is found in yogurt but if your child is picky like mine, she may not eat it. So, go to any pharmacy and ask for "good bacteria packets". They are non-prescription and I think the brand we buy is Beni-bac, they keep them in the refrigerator. All you do is pour a packet in their bottle or sippy cup of milk. These little packs would clear my daughter's rash up in just a day or so. I learned about this treatment for diaper rashes from my daughter's daycare provider and it has been a life saver.
Hope this helps.

Are you using the fungal cream all over her rash as well or just on her "girl parts"? When my daughter had a rash so bad it broke skin, the doctor prescribed an anti fungal cream which cleared it up extremely fast. My neice was prone to yeast infections and her mom always used the anti fungal cream on future diaper rashes and it worked very well. Also, if you put some corn starch in the bathwater that also helps. Be sure to wipe her bottom with a warm wet washcloth instead of babywipes too. The wipes will irritate the rash even more and sting her poor little butt. Since my daughter has never had a yeast infection, I don't know if you can use anything else for the rash, but you may want to ask if you can use AD ointment..that stuff works wonders, but if the rash has broke skin then I would just recommend the anti fungal cream...the A+D ointment will make the rash worse.
Good Luck...hope I could help.

My girls have very sensitive skin and have gotten diaper rashes very easily. I have used an oatmeal bath for my daughters and this helps a TON! However, I also wanted to bring up another option...last January we all got strep throat in our house. My 4 yr. old (who was potty trained, except at night at the time) got what looked like a diaper rash and/or yeast infection soon after our strep. We found out about 6 weeks later after a ton of treatments for a yeast infection with antibiotics and anti-fungal creams that she had perianal strep. It is a very uncommon condition that usually goes undiagnosed for up to 6 months...b/c dr.'s think it is a yeast infection or diaper rash. (I finally took her to a dermatologist one day after being up with her all night b/c of the pain.) It made her constipated and not want to go potty. All she wanted to do is sit in the tub. I'm not saying that I think your daughter has this, but it is something to watch for if the diaper rash or yeast infection doesn't clear up soon. We battled hers for 6 months until we finally found the right cure. It would go away for a little while then return 3-4 weeks later. The final result of treatment was 30 dys of Amoxicillin. Good luck and I hope she doesn't have it - I just remember going through that and wish someone told me it was an option!

Instead of treating the rash and yeast infection, have your doctor put her on a different medication instead of letting her suffer.....there are way too many medications out there so you should be able to find one that works for her...my daughter could not take Augmentin for the same reason. I insisted on something different and never let him put her on it again...we had no more trouble after that.

My daughter recently had a bad diaper rash during teething, and the things that finally helped were: Dr. Smith's diaper cream at every diaper change and with a layer of vaseline over it at bedtime, which is expensive but well worth it (it contains zinc, as well as lanolin, which is soothing); plenty of air-dry time after diaper changes when possible; lots of yogurt (I mix yobaby half and half with plain, full-fat stonifield farm yogurt for less sugar); and using cotton balls dipped in warm water instead of baby wipes for diaper changes. Good luck!

I use Paladin Ointment for my grandson who gets bad strong diareah when he has to take antibiotics. I get it at K-Mart pharmacy. You have to ask for it at the pharmacy counter even though you don't need a prescription. It comes in a pink and white jar and costs about $3. It might be available at Wal-Mart too. It is really good and will clear it up fast! His pediatrician recommended it, but I had used it when my grown children were small too. It is thick and pasty and will work as a barrier to the burning diareah while it heals. You have to wash, dry and reapply after each bowel movement. Don't use baby wipes as they will burn her skin, only cool water and make sure to change cloths every time and wash those cloths in hot water and bleach/detergent if possible to not spread the bacteria. I agree with the poster before me about the yogurt, his dr said to give him a single serving of it per day while on the antibiotics and there is also a med called Culturelle that is for diareah in adults and you can use half of a capsule mixed with whatever liquid she is drinking in a cup or bottle once a day and it contains Lactobacillus GG which is a good bacteria and the package says it forms a barrier of good bacteria in the intestine to safely fight off the bad bacteria and strengthen your natural defenses(also recommended by his doctor). You should also stay away from any milk or dairy products, it will make it worse. My little grandson was about your daughter's age when he had it so bad and he was chafed so bad he couldn't stand for the diaper or anything to touch his skin so I put a quilt on the living room floor and laid a large garbage bag under it in case of leakage and I let him lay on that whenever possible to let the air get to his skin to help it heal and stop the irritation from the diaper rubbing against it or you can wrap her bottom in a soft receiving blanket. Good luck to you and her! I hope she heals up fast! :)

I am a mother of two girls 7 and 5 with very sensitive skin. They both have had ear infections and bladder reflux which meant quite a few antibiotics. We use a product called Aquaphor. It can usually be found in pharmacies next to the the Noxema. It has the texture and look of vasaline and works wonders. My second child had a hideous rash in her first week. The doctor kept telling me to use a zinc based product. By the time I switched to Aquaphor, it was a bloody mess. I switched at the urging of seasoned grandmother. It started soothing her immediately and cleared up completely in a couple of days. I use it on them whether I think it is a yeast or mere rash problem. Good luck.

When using antibiotics, yeast is the most common culprit of diarrea and rashes, so try to remember these tips:
Before rash:
1)You should always try to feed her yogurt to promote healthy bacteria in the bowls and genital area and prevent rashes.
With a rash:
2)STOP USING WIPES or ANYTHING containing alcohol or Zinc (Desitin)it won't help.
3)Bath FREQUENTLY in plain luke to cool water or water with just a SMALL AMOUNT of baking soda or Aveeno (Baking soda neutralizes digestive acids that breakdown skin tissue.)
4)Reduce the amount of acidic foods and dairy products(other than yogurt). Try bananas, rice, plain chicken and other gentle foods that help solidify stool.
5)Ask your Dr. for Nystatin, Silvadine, or talk to your local pharmacist they have wonder potions that are suprisingly helpful.
Good luck!

My mother swore by this, and it worked great for us too. Spread plain old multi purpose flour in a thin layer on a cookie sheet, and put it in the oven at a relatively low temperature, just until it starts to turn golden brown. Let cool, then put in some kind of resealable container. This is super simple, but you'd be amazed! My youngest brother had issues with cronic diaper rash, and Mom swears this is the only thing that helped! I also used California Baby Diaper Cream (californiababy.com) on my daughter for the less extreme rashes, its wonderful. It's all natural and is even great for minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. Its a little pricey, but a little goes a long way, I've been using the same tube for nearly a year. It runs about $10-$12 per tube plus shipping but is completely worth it!

My daughter used to have horrible diaper rash when on antibiotics for ear infections. Sometimes it was so severe it was like open sores, the zinc oxide creams made it worse. Then I read about "Bag Balm" it comes in a large square green tin can. You will usually find it with the other hand lotions and creams, not in the baby aisle. Make sure you look high and low, it's usually not on a middle shelf. It contains 100% Lanolin, Petrolatum, and a antispetic. Yes, it was originally made for cows udders but this stuff WORKS and it is FAST.
I included a user review from epinions.com for you to check out.
It is relatively inexpensive. It is slightly malodorous but compared to the pain your child is in what's a little odor? I always had luck finding it at OSCO and I noticed the local walmart had it in the pet section.
I know, I know...it sounds unbelievable but I have a can of this stuff in every room and every diaper bag in my house. I won't buy any other kind of diaper rash ointment. Also to use it in conjunction with the the steroid prescription ointment you can use the RX first and let it dry. Let your baby air dry. Then smear a thick layer of bag balm over the top before diapering. One more think I always rinsed my daughter's bottom or let her sit in a luke warm bath after a BM and before diapering her back up.
Good luck! Feel free to send me a private message if I can be more help.

When changing them also, I avoided wipes and used cotton balls and warm water. It still hurts unfortunately, when they have such a bad rash, but is a lot better than the wipes. Be sure to dry her as well, so when you are applying the cream, it is onto completely dry skin. (Those cloth baby diapers are great for drying bottoms!) Pat, don't rub. Hope this helps!

NO DOUBT ABOUT IT...A&D OINTMENT (NOT THE CREAM). It's very thick and sticks on like Vaseline, but it works better than Vaseline because it's medicated. Lather it on after every diaper change and bowel movement.
It may hurt a little when you first put it on, but that's simply because ANYTHING you put on your daughter will make her feel sore when she's in that condition. The soreness goes away fast.
Regarding baths, baking soda may help because it has the salt effect, which heals skin.
Regarding some suggesting your daughter eat yogurt, this may work for some children, but pay attention to how it may effect your own child, because yogurt can give some children looser bowel movements (like my children). If your daughter will eat cheese, that may help slow down the bowel movements. String cheese is popular with kids. Like anything though, make sure not to give your child too much yogurt or cheese, because if it's not your child's norm, overdoing it can also have an adverse effect and upset her stomach (causing more bowel movements).
Make sure NOT to give your daughter anything acidic to drink, like fruit juices. Water is the best thing for them to drink. If you can't get her to drink water, sometimes simply adding ice cubes will attract children. If she refuses water, then Pedialyte is a good choice too. Also, keep her away from eating rich foods for the time being, which may upset her stomach (like red & white sauces or desserts). Keep food bland, like crackers or Cheerios for snacks.
I would be careful about letting your daughter run around without a diaper on. As long as their rash infected skin is covered and soothed by something like A&D Ointment, they should be fine and extra air won't be necessary. You don't want to take the chance of spreading dropped feces germs to yourself, to other children, or possibly even reinfecting your daughter at a later date. You may not know if you step in it or touch it since it will be on the floor or ground somewhere.
Good luck, and let us know what ends up working for your daughter!

I would also like to urge you also to use a preventive whenever giving antibiotics too. After one bad rash, I became a proponet of yogurt with active cultures to prevent. I used vanilla yogurt and mixed it with cereal or gave alone when they would take it. Works like a charm - will even help in clearing it up. I was told by a friend to add Mylanta to desitin in order to get rid of a severe diaper rash quickly. My 14month old son was shaking and screaming in pain with a bleeding and solid red diaper rash and I pleaded for help with friends. It worked!I was told to add the mylanta to a large tube of desitin until slightly runny. It takes longer to put it on because you really have to rub it in or it runs off.Don't be afraid to frost it on heavily and that diaper rash will be controlled quickly.

Hi A.! It sounds like your question about Diaper rash has been well answered - my gma always used vasaline and cornstarch on my son. Worked every time.
As far as the ear infections go, you should consider chiropractic. My daughter had ear infections as a baby and chiropractic always worked extremely well. We also used Garlic oil, which you can find at the health food store. They are usually in the children's section and they're called "Ear Drops".
I hope this helps
Good luck!

You had so many responses to this.I don't know if another mom recomended not using wipes any more,at least till the rash is completely over it.My nephew had a rash that no cream seemed to help and my sister used warm clothes or cotton balls to lightly clean him off.He had on so bad it was cracking and bleeding. She let him air dry for a while and still went ahead with the desiton to insure it wouldn't rub on the diaper as bad.I wish you and your baby the best of luck.

I just got over a bout with diaper rash with my 5 mo old that was caused by diarrhea. Our remedy for her was: 1)No wipes, baby wash cloths with warm water only at each diaper change 2) Lotramin AF applied at night with A&D ointment applied liberally 3)A&D ointment at each diaper change 4)Change diaper every hour if possible during day 5) Change diaper at least once during the night 6) Soak her bottom in warm water with baking soda 2-3 times a day 7) Allow her to be diaper free as much as possible (I know this is difficult. I laid down a tarp with an old blanket over it on the living room floor. Also in her crib, while she napped I laid her on an open diaper with an absorbent pad under her. The air helps dry it out and does wonders for the healing process. There maybe accidents, but clean them promptly and stick with it. Also a side note, try to not feed veggies or fruit. We stuck with formula and rice cereal until it cleared up. I know your diarrhea is caused by medicine, but reducing the fiber intake should help with it.

Hello I saw your message posted on Mammasource and I have gone through the same thing with my son. He had chronic ear infections which Augmentin caused bad diarrrhea and rashes. Don't know if this will work for you, but we would try to very gently bathe him in aveeno bath and when we changed his diaper I would try to blot his bottom vs. wiping and I would use desitin creamy with Aquaphor ointment on top of the diaper cream and then put a little cornstarch powder on top of that to seal it in. I know that sounds like alot of hassle, but usually within a week it would get much better. Aquaphor is expensive, but very worth it!!
Just another peice of advice try to not feed your daughter alot of acidic foods and give her yogurt that helps as well.
Good luck and I hope she feels better soon:)

Hello A.. I'm sorry to hear about your little one. Unfortunately, this often happens when a child is on antibiotics. I find it helpful to do a "google" search for "natural cures" and then whatever I'm looking for.
As far as what you are experiencing right now. Giving her a bath in colloidal oatmeal will really help ease the pain. I know this is messy, but you can do it in the kitchen sink and then be ready to bathe her in a regular bath.
Second, you can buy "infant probiotics" at health food stores. It is usually refrigerated. This can go directly on the rash and the baby can have it as a supplement. It will really help with the yeast.
Third, getting as much exposure to the air as possible. This is hard, because we are so afraid of pooping/peeing on the floor...but it really will help her bottom.
Other than that be sure to keep her clean and dry until she's off the antibiotics.

Aw that poor little dear must be just miserable. I am sorry, well she is so young yet and will probably heal up real quick if you just smooth some vaseline over the infected areas to create and invisible protective shield so the skin can heal without irritation. I would reserve the tylenol for sleeping at night if she is still uncomfortable, but with the vaseline and skip the baths for now, she should should show marked improvement in just a few days.I would also give her plenty of diaper free time!

You might want to try giving her yogert with active cultures to help restore the normal bacteria in her gut. Use pediatric ibuprofen (antiinflammatory) instead of Tylenol. Use the following ointment by Dr. Jack Newman. He developed this cream for mothers who get yeast infections in breast ducts/nipples, however, it also works great on babies bottoms to heal excoriation quickly. The ointment, APNO, has to be compounded by the pharmacy. You'll need a prescription from your pediatrician; some doctors are already familiar with this ointment. It's also called Newman's Ointment or All Purpose Ointment. If not, the following is the recipe the doctor/pharmacy will need.
. APNO (All Purpose Nipple Ointment) as below:
 Mupirocin 2% ointment (15 grams)
 Betamethasone 0.1% ointment (15 grams)
To which is added miconazole powder so that the final concentration is 2% miconazole. This combination gives a total volume of just more than 30 grams. Clotrimazole powder to a final concentration of 2% may be substituted if miconazole powder is unavailable, but both exist (the pharmacist may have to order it in). I believe clotrimazole is not as good as miconazole, but I have no proof of that. Using powder gives a better concentration of antifungal agent (miconazole or clotrimazole) and the concentrations of the mupirocin and betamethasone remain higher.
If you are local, I believe the pharmacy at Overland Park Regional Medical Center (medical building) has it, O'Brians Pharmacy (across from St. Lukes Hospital; plaza), but I think they have a new location at Nall &Shawnee Mission Pkway and St. Joseph Health Center, medical mall pharmacy also is familiar with this ointment.
As far as bathwater is concerned, I think just plain warm water for soaking will help facilitate healing.

Here is what my Dr told me to do: get Bag Balm (you can get it at the pet section of walmart). Bag Balm is what they put on cow's utters to help them not get chapped. It allows the skin to breathe but does not let the wet get to the skin. He said it is much better then any diaper cream because it allows the skin to breathe. Then in the morning and in the evening put a dab of cortaid and a dab of destin in your hand mix it up and spread on bottom. That actually made the rash go away very quickly. The diarrhea had burned the bottom and that is why it is hurting. This happened when my boys got rota virus. Also do not use baby wipes, use wet wash cloth or wet paper towels. The wipes have chemicals that can irritate the skin. We did this until the rash went away and then moved back to Pamper's sensitive. We used pamper's sensitive since the boys were in the NICU. Good Luck

Try using the fungal creme first to help heal....THEN, cover the diaper area with A&D ointment. It's water proof and will give an extra layer of protection from the urine/BM.
The baths are great, and if you let her go around without a diaper for abit to get some fresh air. Clean her bottom and then maybe take her outside to the back yard. That way, if she has an accident, it won't be in the house. The fresh air will help to "dry" the diaper rash up.

Hi Angie,
Ohhh, just gotta love it when your little one gets a double whammy! The best thing you can do is give her bottom some air! The ointment should help when diapers are on, but otherwise, get her little bottom some air! It's not quite so difficult when the weather permits...luckily, we still have some decent weather (even just an hour in the morning will help!)
My little one had a double whammy back in January...doc said air and ointment and I was like...what? I'll have a mess! But, I just let him have more "air time" between changes and after baths before getting dressed.
Don't worry, you little one will get better soon...the first few days are the worst, but your past that by now, better days are ahead! Hope this helps and Best Wishes! ~K.

My daughter had similiar problems after her bad ear infection and treatment. There is a very simle cure...yogurt. Even the pediatrician told me this after I brought her in with a terrible colon infection. Yogurt contains acidophilus, which replaces the good intestinal bacteria that is killed when taken strong antibiotics. After eating yogurt for a day or two, the diarrhea should clear up.
As far as treatment of the sore bottom until then, when infants have bowel infections and other kinds of diarrhea, the stools are often more acidic than usual and the acid may burn her skin. Her skin should be washed with mild soap and warm water, rinsed and then thoroughly dried. Then apply a barrier cream - even just petroleum jelly. This has to be done after each bowel movement.

I would simply lay her diaper-less on a large towel for 15 minutes about four times a day. Ask you ped about this as well. Hang in there!!

I have a boy, so the diaper rash issue is a little different. When he had it really bad, I used the Aquafor ointment. It's really thick, but clear, and doesn't smell. Also, I used Burt's Bees diaper rash ointment, which is really just zinc oxide, but those were the only two that worked for me. I tried the Desitin, the Balmex, the A&D ointment, Super Duper Diaper Doo, and even just cornstarch baby powder. I know they are all basically the same thing, which makes it difficult. Aquafor Baby, should be with the baby stuff by the pharmacy, but it's also by the make-up aisle. It can be used for diaper rash, dry skin, chapped lips, etc. If you buy the tube not marked "baby", it's a couple of dollars cheaper. Go figure.

hi A.. I too am in Salina KS if i read that correctly about you.. I have a 14mo old son. Anyway My son had severe ear infections well one that lasted from about 5months until he was 8months trying numerous different meds and finally he's got tubes..seems he's taking after me! I had horrible ear infections most my life til my middle school years..and now i'm 29 and glad i am outa that period. lol Anyway one med he was on gave him diarrhea bad and it was Augmentin. Its a very strong nasty medicine. He was given it for ear infections.. well I quit the medicine cause he didn't even want to eat well I called his dr and the dr told me to go to Walmart and go to the pharmacy counter and ask for Alternagel. Its a very potent antacid/sour stomach thing and its liquid and it is adult strength but he told to follow the directions on the back of the bottle so we did. I don't think it helped much and I did what would be a no no to most I gave him a small pinch like 1/4th or 1/2tsp of children's immodium. Never hurt him and it solved the problem. :) as for the rash I just changed his diaper as soon as i was catching on that he did go and i used powder and diaper rash cream i switched on and off. I'm told warm wash rags for wiping are sometimes better then wet wipes when rashes are bad.. and if you're really daring u can let her air out go diaperless a few but i can totally understand you not wanting to either lol. Ok well hope this helps if u wanna catch me i have yahoo msgr ____@____.com its also my email address. i have msn msgr ____@____.com as well.

about the cream I would not use instead, use the corn starch
which is like the baby powder but it does not have any perfumes and such added to it.It will work,it worked on my
2 daughters allways. And change the dipers very often to make sure that she does not stay wet for very long time.
P.S. for wiping her please soak a terry cloth in warm chamomile tea and wipe her wih that instead regular baby wipes.

My son just got over an ear infection (augmentin was prescribed as the antibiotic) and he had a horrible rash. The doc said to use Lotramin AF every time I changed his diaper (his bottom and whole diaper area was bright red!). The rash got better almost immediately. You might want to try the Lotramin AF, as I have tried others, but none work as fast as this one. Warm washcloths are better than baby wipes on a sore bottom as well. Also, you could leave off the diaper for a while after every change, and add a little baking soda to a shallow bath to let her sit in anytime.
Hope she feels better real soon!
L.
PS...Yogurt was also advised by the doc to help from the inside out...if you go that route, make sure you get yogurt with active yeast cultures. Most do have this, but not the Gogurt type ones.

Hi A., I know how your heart aches when your baby is hurting and you don't know what to do to help her. I whole-heartedly concur with what the other response was. Especially about the barrier cream. Vaseline, or any very thick ointment will protect her bottom from further discomfort while she has the rash. The only other thing I would add to the mix is air. I know she has diarrhea now, but any time you can expose her bottom to air it will help move the rash along. But right now her comfort is first and foremost.
With my son's ear infections, and he had lots, a couple of times we stopped the medication because of that. I did learn though, that if I could prevent a cold from developing, most times I could prevent the ear infection. He was in daycare, so it was hard. But lack of sleep was usually the biggest risk factor for him. Good Luck!

You need to take her to the doctor she needs a prescription medication call nystatin. This can come in a cream or the doctor that I work with perscribes it in a powder and suggests putting it in a butter tub that is clean and empty mix it with a tube of desetin and a tube of 1% hydracortasone. The mixture lasts forever and doesn't need to be refridgerated. Yeast infections need to be treated with the medication though. This is a good solution and it last so if she has this problem in the future your set!

Hi. My daughter is 3 years old now but she got really bad diaper rashes when she was little. The creams & the anti fungal stuff never really worked. My mom told me to use vasaline & it did wonders. The vasaline really keeps the stuff off of the child's bottom. My daughter had over 12 ear infections in one year. She finally got tubes but in a year ago the past April. She has only has one or two small ear infections since. Well I hope I have helped you out.

Hello A.-
I had that problem a few times with my kids so I know what you are going through. It's so hard when that happens. I would suggest, if you're not doing it already, each and every time you change her after you have cleaned her up slather on a generous layer of Desitin AND then vaseline and let it coat her skin. Then put on a clean diaper. Also, for a couple of days watch her very closely if you can and as soon as you see that she has had a bm change her ASAP. The key is to try not to let her diarrhea touch her skin or avoid it as much as possible so her skin has time to heal. I don't know how much more time on the antibiotich she has left or if you feel comfortable doing this but I would also ask your doctor to switch her to a different antibiotich. There are sooo many out there now that will not cause diarrhea that you and she shouldn't have to suffer through this.
Take care and good luck!

Dear Angie,
Sorry to hear about you baby's rash...that is terrible. If she is continuing to have the diarrhea please ask your pediatrician if you may use an product such as Lactinex powder in her food to replenish the good bacteria in her colon. Lactinex is available over the counter, it is kept refridgerated, just ask your pharmacist (Walgreens usually has it). Otherwise, you can give her yogurt to eat which will also help replenish the good bacteria in her colon which was destroyed by the antibiotic - leading to the diarrhea.
Next, the more you can keep her out of diapers and her botton open to air the better. Spending the day without a diaper might make a big difference, if you have the time to stay in a room with vinyl floors (for accidents) and have your daughter in and out of the tub often. It is best to use the fungal cream that the physician ordered so as not to accidentally use a product which might cause the fungus to grow more easily. Ask your pediatrician if you may use children's Motrin for her pain, if she is not responding well to the Tylenol.

Hi A.,
My Dr. told us to soak her bottom in baking soda & water for a few minutes after a bm. Use a dryer set on warm to dry her. Then put (in this order) fungal cream, 1% hydrocortison cream, then a thick layer of diaper cream (she said whatever but we used desitin.....if not really bad, we use vasaline....this is a barrier so that the other 2 creams can do their job). hope that helps.

Using a little bit of baking soda (I usually use 1-2 tablespoons in the bathtub when it's filled about 3 or 4 inches deep with water) in her bath water can help ease the irritation (but with a yeast infection, you may want to check with a pediatrician---I'm not sure if baking soda would irritate that further or not). Also, I firmly stand behind the earlier suggestion of Triple Paste. I have seen it at Walgreens. My daughter was sick earlier this year from what I thought was a milk allergy. She had diarrhea very badly, and became dehydrated to the point that she had to be put on an IV twice. The doctors there sent us home afterward with a lot of the sample sizes of the Triple Paste. It took care of her diaper rash in no time. I could see a noticeable difference after the first diaper change, and in less than 2 days, the rash was gone completely. Check with the pharmacist first if you get the Triple Paste to make sure that it is okay to use on the combination of a diaper rash and yeast infection. Also, make sure to keep pushing things like water, Pedialyte, or even a little Gatorade to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated. It's no fun, and it's one of the worst feelings to watch your baby getting stuck repeatedly with needles. I hope she feels better soon. Hang in there mom, because she will eventually stop hurting and be back to her happy little self soon enough.

When my son gets a bad rash, I use A&D Ointment (apply a thick layer) and then cover that with baby powder. The baby powder seems to absorb the urine and stool, while the A&D protects the skin.
Also, Aveeno makes a "baby rash bathtub powder". Sorry, I don't know the actual name. It is a powder that you put in the tub and then let the baby soak in and it will help with the diaper rash.
Best of luck, I know that diaper rash is no fun for either of you!
