I completely agree with Elizabeth. I swear by aquaphor too. Ive been using it for 4 yrs. The dr said the desitin I was using was making the rash worse bc it has a "perfume" ingredient in it. But you may need a prescription to start making it better 1st, then continue w/aquaphor. My dr gave me Mycolog which works overnight!

Triple paste is the best. Although it is more expensive, you use less os it lasts much longer. Good luck!

it might not be the meat, but it might be wise to stop feeding it to him for awhile. Don't use baby powder either. The best remedy is to air his bottom, but at 8 months that might be hard. Desitin is great, it does help sooth the rash and protects him from a wet diaper.

This may be a repeat from prior responses, but we just started using the "Triple Butt Paste"- rather expensive- but works quicker than anything else OTC- our son we realized, too late, at 3, that he was allergic to 4 things- (meat wasn't one of them)- but I'd avoid it- and anytime he gets 1 wrong thing, he has the same problem. (They say you really can't discern allergies until they're 2, but once Max got real food at 1, we had problems, hence, I say test them as soon as you can!- a simple blood test to test for as many things as possible- not that it's pretty).

"Bacitracin" can be used on those open sores to prevent infection-(generic, OTC), and "Ketaconazole," is a prescribed yeast infection medicine that has also helped, similar to (even trying) OTC Monistat/Lotrimin up to 3x a day, along with the other creams. It can be awful- hang in there. :) AIring dry for as long as you can b4 putting on another diaper helps too- (or just stick him/hold him naked in the bathtub to air dry).

Aquaphor, used in conjunction with another cream based ointment, also helps. We always have put on multiple things to help his rear end heal, and have switched to a gel-based diaper- (Huggies,possibly Pampers too). This seems better on his butt than even the generic, dye & perfume free ones.

When you said you started meet again, you didn't specify if it was the chicken again or something else. If it is the chicken that broke him out, try to give him another type of meat, such as beef or pork. ALSO, the best way to tell if it is an allergic reaction is to make homemade chicken and then purey it for him. If he still breaks out afterwards, then you know it is the chicken.

Ask your pediatrician to give you s prescription for Silvadeen (excuse the spelling), it is used for burns and a diaper rash is a burn. When my daughter was a baby she was allergic to disposable diapers and developed a severe diaper rash, my then pediatrician ordered it after the OTC treatments failed and it worked overnight. When my other 4 children were born I made sure I had it on hand. We had switched pediatricians when my 4th was born, he developed a severe and I mean SEVERE diaper rash, our new pediatrician wanted to put him on a steroid cream, but I refused and begged them to order me Silvadeen. The deal was that if it worked they would never argue with me again and they haven't. I told them to give me 24 hours to see an improvement which they did, but within 6 hours of applying it I saw a major improvement and called them. The next morning, we went to their office and all the doctors were in shock; they now use it on all their patients.

SLATHER him with vaseline petroleum jelly - and I mean use a LOT...that won't heal the rash, but it will make his bum slippery, so pee and poop will slide right off of him...and that will amount to less discomfort for your little boy...

It helped my son, who at 7 weeks spent a week in the hospital...he was so pumped full of every antibiotic that when he peed, all you smelled was penicillin...the vaseline helped him tremendously...

Plus, keep him dry and diaperless as much as possible.

Hello T.. I swear by Aquaphor. I used it for both of my boys when they were babies and still use it for various things. There's no dye or odor to irritate sensitive baby parts. Just put it on clean and DRY skin and you would be amazed! It clears up so quickly.

I'm also sure that the meat is making everything worse. Sorry but you hit a soft spot here ;) (I wouldn't give anyone meat--do you know where it comes from and what it was injected with, how it was raised? He could be allergic to something that animal was given (food or drugs)). I am happily raising a vegan family. No one views not eating meat and related animal products as a problem, because they simply aren't good for you or the environment. Everyone looks and feels better too.

My daughter has a horrible rash it was almost like a burn when I first brought her home and was breast-feeding. Anyway - I used Desitin and Vaseline. They also have Aquaphor which is like vaseline but it's not as greasy. It was gone in one day....this was at the suggestion of the pharmacist. Good Luck

First of all, don't use baby wipes on his rash, this will only irritate it further. Use cotton balls with luke warm/tepid water to clean him. This is very gentle plus there are no harsh chemicals.

I would call his pediatrician and ask what he/she thinks. Also, was there anything in that meal besides meat? My sister's first child had a reaction to peas. He is now 5 yrs. and after thorough testing, we now know that he has an allergy to peanuts!

If there was another food mixed in with the chicken, I would try giving him those foods, giving each type seperately and for a few days at a time. This way, say for example, you give him carrots and he has a reaction, that could be the culprit. Also, try giving him meat on it's own, without any other food mixed in.

I am a mother of four and the only diaper rash cream I've ever used was Triplepaste. It used to be that the pharmacists keep it behind the counter and you had to ask for it. It's a little pricey, maybe they thought people would steal it. However,you do not need a prescription for it, and I believe now they do keep it on the shelves with everything else. This stuff is very thick and has worked on my kids worst rashes. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I switched to CLOTH diapers and have had no problems since.

In your case since you said it started after you introduced meat. I would say it could be that since meat is more difficult to digest,his body has to produce more acid , and this could be the cause of the irritation,

BUT the bleeding suggests yeast infection.

Your poor little guy must be so uncomfortable. Here are a few things that worked for me, first don't use any more wipes, instead try washing the irritated area when changing him or try a damp cloth. Second, I used Aquaphor (you can buy it at Babies R Us, Target, Walmart, just about anywhere), it too is a bit pricey, but I work for a Radiation Clinic and we give them to our patients for skin irritation. It worked wonders for my little boy. I even use it on his dry skin and it clears it up almost immediately.

You can use triple paste, but if he's bleeding, I would take him to the pediatrician, as he probably needs bactroban on every other change (under the triple paste). I would also leave him diaperless as much as possible (not an easy trick I know). You could put him down on those large hospital pads to play, and if he goes it's not a big deal. The more it's open and the air gets at it, the faster it will heal. I've never heard about meat causing that reaction, so I'd check that with your pediatrician too. Did he have any juice? Citrus? Tomato sauce? My daughter used to have diaper rash for a week with even a sip of juice.

Hi T., Some of the worst rashes I have seen in my 42 years of motherhood have been from teething. The teeth beside the 2 front teeth are sometimes called the stomach teeth (the pointy ones) You may want to see the doctor about it. Years ago we were given a capsule to break open into the baby's bottle and the urine would become the medicine. Not in use any more. I think mycolog is the brand name. It may not have anything to do with the chicken but it is good to observe and rule out. What will heal a rash is Zinc oxide but you may need an antifungal cream. I have never found Desatin to be very good...EVER. It never worked good for my kids. Try triple paste. It's expensive but it usually works great. It always worked with my son. It does help with my daughter, it prevents but once she has it no help. With her, amazingly enough, we used bag balm. It was invented by a farmer to be used on cow udders. I've used it in the past on my dog, but I never would have thought to use it on my daughter's tushy (I used it on the recommendation of another mother). But it got rid of the rash, quickly. Just for the record, if he continues to get rashes from what he's eating you may want to discuss this with your pedi. Make sure it's not an allergy.

hey... try triple paste... this works like a charm.. if it doesn't clear up ..it maybe a yeast rash,, maybe a good idea to add acidolphilis right on the rash or add to his drinks..

It may not be convienient for you, but whenever possible, try to NOT put on his diaper, to let the AIR get on the rash, to dry it out. Being outdoors, in warm sunny weather, is very helpful. I remember doing this with my three children, and it worked.

Hi there - the best thing that I have found for diaper rash is from Whole Foods - it is made by Welda and is a diaper rash ointment with Calendula in it. It is amazing and works overnight.

Poor little guy, I had a little boy in my daycare that had a rash so bad he would scream everytime we changed him. His mom had to get a prescription ointment to heal it because as you said desitin is only to protect it. I have never heard of someone being allergic to meat, however if it was in a dinner did it contain tomato sauce. My kids used to get red rashed cheeks (on their face) everytime they ate something with the tomato sauce. It could be the acid in the tomatoes. Also when children are teething their urine becomes very strong and could also be the culprit. I would try to give him water to perhaps make his urine less concentrated. After you clear this up while he is teething I would just use desitin to coat his little bottom each time. I would also read the label on the baby food, maybe it is the meat but i would be more prone to think it is what is in the dinner that could be doing it. Also do not use baby wipes when cleaning him during the rash, they burn like crazy. Just use a wet paper towel or even better after every bowel movement I would just put him in the bathtub to really keep it clean until he heals. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!

My little boy got his first case of diaper rash this summer, also at about 8 months old, when we started getting more adventerous with food.

We took him to the doctor to make sure there was no yeast infection. She advised us to let him air out as much as possible to aid the healing. It was summer at the time so I took him to play naked outside on a blanket for as long as I could each time I changed his diaper.

Recently he got another touch of diaper rash. Too cold to play outside now, but for a day or so, a few times as day I let him play bare-bottomed on our tile kitchen floor. I just kept a towel on hand to clean up any of the (surprisingly few) messes.

The air really seemed to help.

Ok - when you have this many responses - no one reads them all before responding - so forgive me if I am repeating! Do NOT use any talcum powder - it is actually not good for the skin whether fragranced of not. Definitely avoid anything with fragrance and keep him in natural fibered clothes for awhile (no synthetic fibers - they don't let the skin breathe).

Use plain old corn starch from your kitchen cabinet on the rash. My dgtr had an awful rash at one point, but was like yours overall - nothing much before or after to speak of. Let him hang free as much as you can so he can air dry (even just no diaper - but cotton pants as much as possible) - but LOAD him up with corn starch. The corn starch absorbs any moisture that can cause the rash to continue. If you are using wipes - don't (unless there's poop - a soft cloth and warm water will do fine). If he pees - blot him off and reload with the corn starch. I tried to creams (zinc, not zinc, etc - but putting that on a diaper rash is sheer torture!) So - I let her be without a diaper for a day (she wouldn't let me put it on anyway!) and kept using the corn starch on her - it cleared up mostly within 1-2 days - fully within the week and I kept using the corn starch liberally for a good long time to prevent anything from coming back. i have 3 kids and they all at one point or another had severe diaper rashes, caused by diarrhea due to foods or viruses and teething. what worked very well and cleared the rashes up within a couple of days was this: i never used wipes, i always washed the bum with warm water and soft towel or just gave a quick bath. then i let them be without a diaper for about 5 minutes to let the bum air out a bit, be prepared for accidents, which surprisingly rarely happened! then i would put a think layer of vaseline. change baby often! every hour or hour and a half. at night i would only change them if they would wake up. it seems cremes like desitin burn a lot when you put them on diaper rashes. vaselin was a lifesaver for all those bad rashes! good luck!

At 8 months my daughter got a ton of teeth, and those she did fine with, but when she started getting her molars, she got horrible raw rashes. Aquaphor is great for any dry skin and rash stuff, but with diaper rash if you don't see improvement right away, take him to the Dr, you might need a medicated ointment.

Because you have noticed a possible trigger with the chicken, you might want to try an organic one before you write meat off altogether. Or, try introducing it at a time when you know your son is not teething.

Here's what my doc told me to do:

1. Wash with Cetaphil, instead of wipes. It doesn't have to be rinsed, and can be gently wiped off with a cloth or tissue.

2. If any area is open and bleeding, use bacitracin (not Neosporin, though- that can be bad for babies!).

3. Put 1% hydrocortisone cream on the area. (3x per day. At other diaper changes, skip this step.)

4. Mix 1/2 Lotromin (in the athlete's foot section of the store) with 1/2 Zinc (Butt Paste, Desitin, etc.) and apply at every diaper change.

5. Change diaper every 2 hours max.

Note- The hydrocortisone and Lotromin shouldn't be needed for all that long. The hydrocortisone, especially, shouldn't be used for more than 2-3 days at a time.

This worked wonders for my son! But it does sound like your guy is allergic to something in the food. May not even be the chicken- could be another ingredient!

I see you have lots of advice and I only skimmed it so I might be repeating what you have already heard. I'll tell you what worked for my son.

Diaper Rash Cream - anything with zinc oxide (A+D Ointment, Triple Paste) Triple Paste worked the very best, but was more expensive than A+D. BUT you have to use it for much less time so in the long run I think it evens out moneywise.

My son had 2 open sores on his bum from diaper rash and with Triple Paste they were completely gone after 4 days.

Anything in his diet can irritate his bum, he could have sensitive skin. Use Vaseline as a barrier at every diaper change AFTER he is healed and you shouldn't have that problem. The only time you shouldn't use Vaseline is right after a bath because it will trap moisture in.

If it is really bad you should absolutely go to the pediatrician. They can prescribe something for it.

T., I know and experienced with my last two boys with that. It's the painful, painful thing. My oldst son never had that. First of all, I used Desitin and it worked...nothing worked like that and I have tried everything even the Nystatin that the dr prescribed and nothing. I wanted something natural but no one knew anything natural, but Desitin is my "buddy" when it came down to it. First, T., he may be allergic to what was in it. I gave my boys Organic baby food then when they got to be where they can eat stage two, I pureed my own food. If they're allergic, they would have diaherra and sometimes vomit will happen as well, not always. Second, he may have a yeast infection which Desitin will help to get rid of and my boys had that and if not taken care of, it gets bloody being so sore. It can be from new foods coming out through bowels and mixing with the urine and it's moist down there so it will form there. My second son had the worst case of it and I had to wash his bottom every time and to get that garbage off and it burns too but the wiping would be worst. I had yeast infection on my nipple from my second son (he had thrush in his mouth) after coming home and I know how it feels and I knew and felt such pain for my boys when they had it on their bottom. I'll pray for your baby and let me know how it goes and Jesus will give you His Wisdom if you ask Him and I'll pray.

I had the same problem with my 10 mo. old. The first time it developed into a yeast infection and had to be treated. I took her off any dairy (ie. cheese, yogurt) and it seemed to help but she still gets it once in awhile. I am starting to wonder if the teething could be making things more acidic and therefore irritate her skin??? Just a guess. But I have found that the following helps:

1. change diaper very frequently
2. put 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar in the bath and let him soak in it.
3. Let baby go diaper free whenever possible - this of course is a huge mess when they are crawling!
4. California Baby's calendula cream is great - I put that on and then put some talc-free baby powder on her bottom to keep her dry.
5. If it keeps getting worse put a little bit of cream with 1% hydrocortisone in it. I use a prescription strength once called Dermacort.
they say you can tell if it is a food allergy reaction if they have a red ring around the anus . . .

I've always given my baby a nice warm bath or shower, cleaned her rash with Cetaphil (a soap-free cleanser available at any drug store. I get mine at Costco because I use it on my face as well) and then coat it with Desitin. Sometimes, if it's really bad, I use baby powder, too. I do this at night so she's got time to rest, and it's usually tons better in the morning.

Good luck!!!! He's probably having a reaction to the meat. I wouldn't say he's allergic, but...I know my baby gets diarrhea (and hence, diaper rash) every time I give her yogurt. She doesn't have any problems with other dairy items, so I'm just not giving her yogurt right now.

You've gotten lots of great advice, so I'll just add that even 10 min. a day of being "aired out" is great for a baby's bottom and preventing diaper rash. Of course when your little guy is a bit older, he might just go poop on your floor, but I still do this everyday with my little one. After poopy diapers, I always make sure her skin's dry (you can fan it with a magazine or just blow on it) before I put the new diaper on.

T., vaseline works really well too. But if this rash is bleeding and raw I would not wait for another response to your post, I would get on the phone with the doctor right away. You may need something prescribed. Poor baby. :(

My daughter also seemed to get a rash after eating meat too, but I still gave her meat and now it seems her body is used to it. Anyway, the best cream is Triple paste. It is expensisve but really works

Hi T.. I have a 2 1/2 yr old daughter who has had horrible diaper rashes in the past. It might be something he is eating but make sure who are monerting his acidic intake like juice, tomatoes etc. This can be very painful when they have a bm. Also use the destin on the rash and then apply lots of powder which will act like a shield to the urine so it will not sting. You also might want to let his area get air to help heal, and also what has worked is warm sits baths.make sure you pat him dry do not wipe. If you are using wipes make sure while the rash is still there to use a warm wash cloth and blot the area to clean. You can also try using talcom powder. Make sure anything that you are using is all dye perfume free. Letting air get to the area is really the best thing it can be messy but will help. Keep him dry! Best of luck.

I always used A&D Ointment. I found it to work better than anything else. Desitin burns on open skin and doesn't help to heal it. Other than that try to keep him bottom clean and dry. If at possible let his bottom be exposed to the air. Place a water proof pad under him and let him lie on his belly and play. Alos watch his diaper, if it is even a little wet, change it. Good luck.

Just yesterday someone told me that Mylanta works great to heal the rash. Check w/your pediatrician as always, but my friend swears by it. Good luck! Poor little guy.

Keeping the area dry is the best thing. You can try using bacitracine cream. Diaper rash is like a fungus growing.

Hi there, I have recently had a similar problem, but my little boy has apparently got a touch of thrush on his testicles. I never knew boys could get thrush and we are very careful and clean, but also the teething can play havoc with their systems too. I would go to the pharmacy and talk with the pharmacist about a good cream they may be able to recomend as I live in New Zealand and our medications have different names I really can't help you much there sorry. But just know you aren't alone the other thing is when they start on meat it does change things in their gut as does the teething so it could all be playing a part.

Sorry to hear about your little guy. I recommend Triple Paste. It worked wonders on my twin boys when they were infants. Its expensive but worth every penny.

I also use Triplepaste. It's high level of Zinc helps to heal the rash. But I only use just enough to show some whiteness of the cream; not too much where it is a thick layer. I've heard something in it may interfere with the absorbency of the diaper, perhaps if you put too much on at once because it is so thick. But I've never had any diaper absorbancy issues and the paste works quickly to heal, usually in a day or 2. Good luck!

try bag balm - they sell it at pet stores - it's used for the utters on cows so the skin doesn't crack - i thought our ped was crazy when he suggested that for my youngest daughter's rash - but it cleared it up in no time at all - we were able to find it in the pet dept @ walmart - it comes in a green tin & you just put that on w/each diaper change & within a day or so it shoud be cleared up - good luck!

my daughter used to have this problem when she was teething. she would get craters on her butt and would look like they were bleeding. we even had to take her to the dr a couple of times for it.

i finally tried this, much cheaper than the triple paste or butt paste that are so popular, and it worked awesome.

Been there, done that with our toddler. It's agonizing to have to watch him suffer. The answer is AIR. The very best solution is air time - no pants, no diapers, just air. Just be ready with a towel. It's worth having to do any necessary cleanups to have that pink bum back again, along with your son's happy face.
AFTER the bum air dries, try to let him have "air time" as long as you possibly can as many times a day as you possibly can. Only then, when his bum is totally dry, apply a thick paste of whatever goop you use - we've found Desitin ORIGINAL (not creamy) or even Aquaphor work well - followed by a dusting of powder (100% cornstarch is best and a generic cornstarch powder works fine, or a powder with zinc oxide, such as Gold Bond Baby Powder) to keep the goop from wiping off on the diaper. This procedure worked for our son. Hope it goes well and you find what works for yours.

Oh your poor little guy! I don't know what may be causing the rash, but when my daughter was little we always used Triple Paste on her rashes. She would get them really bad the first year. You don't need a script for it but they do keep it behind the counter at the pharmacy so you have to ask for it. It costs about $25 but it's a little cheaper at the Costco pharmacy. It's expensive but well worth it.

My pediatrician always recommended using vasaline then ointment. You have gotten several different recommendations for that. I prefer the creamy version of Desitin. When the rash goes away, continue to use vasaline and ointment.
For now, while the rash is bothersome, I would stop using wipes, wash with a little soap on a wet wash cloth, then air dry. My neighbor once told me that he used a hair dryer on a low setting to dry his daughter's bottom when she had a rash. She loved it! Maybe your son will too! LOL Start by having the dryer far away and slowly move it closer. Keep your hand nearby to check the temperature level so it doesn't get too hot.
I wouldn't stop him from eating the meat products. His body will adjust. So... gentle wash, dry, goop, diaper, and repeat. How's that for baby directions?? LOL

It certainly sounds to me like he is allergic to something in the baby food. It may not actually be the meat, but may be some other preservative or additive to the food that you're giving him. Did you give him the same brand of food, with the same kind of ingredients both times?

Even though the rash does clear up, I think if it happens again, a visit to his pediatrician is definitely in order. If it is an allergy to some ingredient in the food, each time you feed it to him, his reaction to it will get progressively worse. If it is an allergy, you need to find out what the allergen is that's triggering it, before he has a really serious reaction that may not only cause a rash, but may affect his breathing, as well.

Giving Benedryl may help, but I wouldn't recommend doing that without being told to by his pediatrician, since he's only 8 months old. There are allergy tests that can be done to determine what is causing it, if it is an allergy, even at his young age, and the sooner the allergen can be identified the better. Allergy injections, given over a period of time, may help his body to develop an immunity to the allegen, once it is identified, so the sooner you discover what that is, the sooner you will be able to keep it away from him.

It could be more than a "rash". Strep and yeast infections cause horrible rashes on bottoms.

My son had one bad diaper rash & the doctor recommended balmex. That cleared him up right away. We still use balmex to this day & he hasn't had another rash. He is 20 months & he had his diaper rash when he was about 13 months.
