Worst Diaper Rash Ever!!!

My son has had diaper rash on amd off for the last couple of weeks. He gets it whenever teeth come in and he has 2 at the moment coming down. We have been using balmex with success, but it seems to be not doing the trick anymore. My son cries whenever we change his diaper now. We let him run around "unfettered" after baths so he completely air dires, but his bum is still red. Has anyone had this problem? It hasn't been so bad that we've had to go to the doctor, he said it's from teething anyway. Anyone got the wonder cure for this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who posted on this!!! I can't believe how many people had the same problem. I loved that I got home remedies and over the counter stuff. When all was said and done, the lipton tea bath and the triple paste worked awesome. Thanks again from the bottom of Marik's bottom!!

Ooh, poor little bugger. HOpefully by now it's better, but I found that wipes irritate more. I reverted back to when was just born, warm water and napkins. There are nonsoap cleansers too that you could use in the water.

Try putting Maalox on his bum before you diaper him. The extra saliva from teething makes him have watery poops which cause the rash. The maalox with counteract the acidity and keep it from irritating his bum. Once the teething stops, try Triple Paste to clear it up.

My 16-month old daughter had the worst diaper rash a couple weeks ago also. Is yours son's bright red? It is possible that it is fungal. I would call your doctor's advice line. Our doctor told us to use lotrimen (regular strength) on her bum 3-4 times/day. The other diaper changes we were told to dab Maalox on her bum after it was completely dry. Once the Maalox is dry you cover that with Vaseline or A&D (nothing with zinc because it is harder to rub off after each diaper change and can cause more irritation). Instead of using wipes, use water in a spray bottle and clean with soft tissues.
This treatment cured my daughter's rash in about 24 hours. She was in such incredible pain prior to this it seemed like a miracle when it finally cleared up. Good luck!

Hi M.! My name is S. and I have a 15 month old daughter who always gets a diaper rash when she has a tooth coming in. Just a couple of weeks ago, she had the worst one yet. I did everything you did, but also used this soothing bath treatment by Cottontails. It dried up the rash and was gone in a day! I highly recommend this! I also used the balmex night time formula which seems to be thicker than the regular one, and I used wet paper towels instead of wipes and have since changed to pampers sensitive wipes. Good luck!

Never had the problem with a diaper rash due to teething . . . but we have had really bad diaper rashes before where we couldn't even put a diaper on at all. Our Doctor told us to get Calmoseptine you can get it behind any drug store counter . . . it cost no more then 10$ not too sure on the price. It’s pink and works great. Hard to get off your hands, so I suggest using rubber gloves. Good luck with the teeth, and I hope this helps with the butt end.

I know this is going to sound weird but when my son had the most terrible diaper rash when he was about 16 months a nurse told me to use maalox on his bum. Out of complete desperation, I did and it gave him such relief. He had the diaper rash from taking an antibiotic which changed the acidic quality of his urine etc. Good luck, I know how hard it is to watch little ones in such discomfort!

M., my oldest son had this too. He is 16 now! We had to give him more water (to make his urine more diluted) and after 2 visits to his pediatrician, they gave us a special cream to use. It worked! I don't remember the name of it. Just let him go "bare" whenever you can and change frequently.

Little Remedies makes a diaper rash spray - the only place I've ever seen this is at Hannaford Supermarket. Rubbing ointments on can sometimes be very painful to a child since most are very thick and you have to rub them over the area. This stuff is great because it's liquid and you just spray it on. I'd try that during the day and the A&D ointment at night when your son is going to be in the diaper the longest. Also, add a little bit of baking soda to the bath - it helps sooth the diaper rash.

Hi. Try Aquaphor; It's made by Eucerin. You can get it at Walmart and Babies R Us. It has always worked on my kids and is great for chapped lips and noses when they have colds. It's a little pricey so if you like it, get it at Babies R Us in the giant tub--more for your money. Good Luck!

Hello M.,

I same thing happened to my daughter when she was teething. The Pedi office gave us this great rememdy and it worked great.

Lotrimin cream ( antifungal cream)
Balmex
Hydrocortizone Cream

Put all three on at the same time or you can buy Triple Butt paste, which is all 3 in one tube, it can be purchased at any pharmacy, Target, or Walmart. They also suggested that we only clean her bum ( after every diaper change) with cotton pads or cotton balls soaked in baby oil, do not use any wipes until the rash is cleard up. I hope this helps, like I said it worked great for my daughter.

Good morning. My daughter, who is 18 months, would get terrible diaper rash when she was teething. Her little bottom would be bright red, and she would scream when i would change her diaper. She goes to daycare on Thursdays at Open Arms Childcare in Southwick, and several of the staff there had recommended letting her soak in a warm bath with 6-8 teabags in it. Just plain old lipton tea. I thought it was a crazy idea, but was despirate. I bathed her twice a day in the tea and used regular A&D and noticed a difference after the first diaper change. Overall, it took about 48 hours to completely clear. Good luck!

it costs a little more but i found two ointments that worked better than others: california baby and aveeno. The aveeno has the colloidal oatmeal in it just like the bath soak--other ointments made my sensitive girl scream. My best freind swears by the california baby, it is supposed to have soothing ingredients as well. commercial wipes hurt both my sensitive girl and my friend's baby, but we found using a spray bottle with some water and lavender oil and cloth wipes helped clean up messes with less pain. Not as easy, but was so hard listening to them scream!! You should def avoid ANY products with alcohol as it will dry their skin further AND sting when applied.

Good Luck

He looks hilarous but it does work. His rash was so bad last week his could not attend daycare. Today rash looks better. I hope your sons rash gets better soon. Jenn

Hi M.,

My 15 month old daughter experiences the same thing. She always gets a rash when teething.

When Marik has a bowel movement I would recommend only using
a wet papertowel with a liitle bit of Dove soap. I'm not 100% sure but I believe Balmex contains mineral oil. If so, mineral oil in any skin care product will suffocate the skin, therefore it's not penetrating in to the skin and you will not recieve any benefits from the product. I use Arbonne Baby Care diaper rash cream on my daughter. It's a botanical product so it's made with the finest ingredients from the earth. The great thing abouth their products is that they have a 45 day money back guarantee so if you don't see results, you get your money back, imagine that.

If you want to hear more, feel free to give me a call ###-###-####.

Good Luck.

Hi M....I know you've had many responses to your question, but thought I'd put my 2 cents in as well!
My daughter was going on 2 weeks with a diaper rash when she was about 4 months old. It had nothing to do with teething though. We had tried EVERYTHING....bag balm, aguaphor, A&D ointment, Desitin etc... The only thing that worked was Boudreaux's Butt Paste. We put it on and saw results as soon as her next diaper change. When we bathed her we used Johnson and Johnson soap and we let her go around diaper-less as much as we could (only a few accidents!)...Good luck!!

Both my kids have very sensitive skin. I use original Desitin for their diaper rashes. It is the only thing that works for them. You also might want to try using wet paper towels while he has the rash. The wipes could be irritating his skin. If he has little red spots he might have a yeast infection and need ointment from the doctor.

I have the answer to your prayers! Boudreux's Butt Balm! or Dr Doody's Butt paste, the balm you can find in CVS or Walgreens, it's thick and white and works unbelievably (My son's bum was bleeding it was so raw and it turned pink in one day!), the Dr Doody's stuff is prescription (call your ped!) but it's basically the same.. the script is not cheap! I think it was over $30 not covered by insurance, but a little goes a long way and it works! the stuff otc is about $6 a tube, but it's small - but it too goes a long way.. I don't even use Desitin or Balmex anymore because of this stuff... I mean it REALLY works!!!

I found that with my daughter, she would cry when I used Balmex because it contained zinc oxide. My pedi said to try A&D Ointment without the zinc oxide (it is available both ways). I bought the CVS brand and it seemed to do the trick. I just make sure she is air dried prior to applying the ointment. It seems to make the redness go away and she does not freak out whan I apply it. Also, I was told that oatmeal in the bath can sooth a sore bum. It is kind of messy cleaning up the oatmeal afterwards, but did not bother her. Just be sure not to add any baby wash or soap to the water until your baby's bum heals. You may want to sponge bath him. Also, when wiping him, try to pat unstead of rub. Also, do not use wipes, use a cloth or a soft paper towel with just water. Wipes (even the sensitive ones) hurt the bum when a baby has a rash. Lastly, doing the BRAT (banana, rice, apples, toast) diet may help make his poops more solid as to limit the loose stool, causing the rash. Good luck.

hi M., i have a handicap lil one. when he was little & very sick. he had horrible rashes on his poor lil bum. the local hospital made up this stuff called butt paste. its regular desitin cream(2oz tube),nystatin powder(10ml), & stomahesive powder(10ml). you can mix it all up in a small container. its very thick. you apply at first thick. clean off at each diaper change with a wet cloth(no soaps), the re-apply. keep it thick until you see an improvement. then just a thin ammount. this worked miracles on his lil bum. if you or your pediatrician need the hospitals # to get further info. i'd be glad to give that to you. you doc may need to get perscriptions for the stomaheisive & nystatin. but i'm not sure. the hospital always makes ours for us b/c i dont have time. i hope you can get this for your lil guy. its a very wonderful mixture of stuff that does wonders. take care & good luck to the lil man. luv always C.

HI JESSICA,
I'M A 23 YEART MUM TOO. MY SON, NOAH IS 29 MONTHS OLD WE HAD NEVER REALLY HAD A PROBLEM WITH DIAPER RASHES BUT MY GIRL FRIEND'S DUAGHTER (WHO WAS BORN A MONTH APART FROM NOAH) HAD REALLY BAD DIAPER RASHES. THIS IS WHAT WE FIGURED OUT BY READING DIFFERENT BABY BOOKS AND TALKING TO PHARMASISTS.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO BATHE BABY EVERYDAY....I'M NOT SAYING YOUR NOT BATHING YOUR BABY AND THAT'S WHY HE HAS A RASH. BUT, WHAT A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T KNOW IS THAT BABY SHOULD NEVER BE IN THE BATH FOR MORE THAN TEN MINUTES. IT DRIES OUT THE SKIN AND MAKES IT SUSEPTIBLE TO GETTING A RASH. LETTING YOUR LITTLE BOY RUN AROUND AND AIR DRY IS GREAT BECAUSE THEN YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT LINGERING MOISTURE FROM HIS BATH. BUT AFTER HIS BATH MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY USING JUST BABY POWDER (THE CORN STRACH KIND OF COURSE) RATHER THAN GOUPING HIM UP AND BLOCKING IN MOISTURE.
ONLY USE THE BALMEX AFTER HE'S POOPED AND EVEN THEN ONLY PUT A THIN LAYER ON HIS TUSH BUT PUT A LITTLE MORE AROUND THE ANUS. I THINK THAT DESITIN IS BETTER FOR RASHES; I EVEN USE IT ON MYSELF IF I GET RAZOR BURN. ANYWAYS, WE USED IT ON THE FEW RASHES MY SON HAD AND IT CLEARED THEM UP ALMOST RIGHT AWAY. THERE ARE A FEW DIFFERENT KINDS OF DESITIN AND I THINK THAT THE ORIGINAL OVERNIGHT CREAM IS THE BEST. JUST BECAUSE IT SAYS OVERNIGHT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN'T USE IT IN THE DAYTIME, YA KNOW?
IF HE HAS A RASH THAT IS EXTREMELY BAD YOUR DOCTOR CAN PRESCIBE YOU A SALVE WITH STRONGER MEDICINE IN IT. IF YOUR DOCTOR HASN'T OFFERED DON'T BE AFRAID TO JUST COME OUT AND ASK HIM.
AS FAR AS HIS RASH BEING LINKED TO HIS TEETHING I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF THE EXTRA STRESS ON HIS LITTLE BODY ISN'T MAKING HIM A LITTLE MORE SENSITIVE.
I HOPE YOUR LITTLE GUYS RASH CLEARS UP, I KNOW HOW MISERABLE THAT CAN MAKE A BABY.AND WHEN BABY IS MISERABLE MUMMYTENDS TO GETA LITTLECRANKY AS WELL.
GOOD LUCK

M..... I have something that WILL work to give your son relief from his diaper rash. It is a non-toxic, natural lotion called Renew... and I have a large bottle here at my home (Wentworth) that I would be happy to get to you.

Basically, the two products that you are currently using contain large quantities of toxic chemicals, petroleum based products and other things that you probably can't pronounce. Renew contains natural vegetable based glycerin, aloe and tea tree oil (natural antibacterial and skin soothing/healing properties). It is an incredible product, and something you may want to give a try.

If you are interested in it, send me a private message, and I will happily arrange to meet you somewhere and hand it off to test out.

My son also got diaper rashes when he was teething...I read somewhere online that teething can cause 'drool diarhea' from all the excess saliva that babies produce and swallow when teething.
I always used Butt Paste, and it cleared up within a few days. If it doesn't clear up, perhaps you could ask your pediatrician if a prescription of Nyastin might help.

It is relatively in expensive and really works! I would also use it when my hands and feet would crack in the winter. Slather hands or feet then put rubber gloves on hands or plastic bags on feet, wear for a couple hours or overnight if possible. I would be pletty well healed after one application. Good luck with your Boy! Poor little bum =(.

Hi M.,

I have a son that is 9 months old. He does not get a diaper rash often, but when he does it is BAD. I use a product from Arbonne. It is all natural and is wonderful. The actually have a whole baby line you can look into. Anyway, I put it on him and the rash is gone by the end of the day. I love it!! You can purchase it online at Arbonne.com. If you have any questions, let me know.

Hi!
You could try Triplepaste. It is an over the counter paste. However, you have to ask the pharmacy to order it. It is some what expensive, but well worth it. It worked wonders on my daughter after and during anibiotic use. If this doesn't work, or maybe first you should call the pediatrician and they will give you a Rx for it. Good luck and i hope it clears up!

I know how it is to have a baby get those really bad rashes. My daugther use to get them (she is 5 now) when she was a baby/toddler. I used a combination of ointments to clear it up, so lets see if i can remeber what it was. I used bag balm, triple paste(wal-mart has this), neiosporin (spelling?), and I beleive the other was a type of hydracordisione(along the lines of benedryl). You would apply these one on top of each other but use the hydrocordisone, neiosporin, triple paste and then the bag balm. I hope this may be of some help to you.

My oldest son used to get that too. What type of diapers are you using? Huggies were the worst for him, so we switched to Pampers. We also used A&D ointment with just a light layer of baby powder over the ointment. If that didn't take care of it completely, it certainly brought it down to a tolerable level. I learned through the years that it's best to keep a few different types of rash cream/ointment on hand. For some strange reason one type might work better than another one week, then vice versa the week after that.

Hope that helps!!

Wow - I was all ready to give my advice but you women have already given tons! I think though that your best bet at this point would be to have him looked at to make sure it is not a yeast infection as putting regular diaper creme on it could irritate it if it is. I also swore by the A&D ointment - not the cream - the greasy stuff. Someone mentioned the zinc being difficult to wipe off - that's true and if the skin is raw it can take some skin off with it.

Diaper rash is horrible for them. The hospitals use "Butt Balm". I saw this brand at Target when I was there a few days ago. It must be the same. I know its not fun to clean up accidents but you should consider letting him be diaper-free for longer periods of time throughout the day. Blessings!

Try using fragrance free wipes (or water on a cloth), then let it dry completely, or pat dry with towel. Then put bacitracin on it and balmex over it. The bacitracin might help heal it up, while the balmex will hopefully help protect it. Hope his little booty feels better soon.
