Diaper Rash! Help!

Hi:
The craziest thing happened this weekend. My daughter was fine on Saturday morning and then, I changed her before her nap and noticed a super-red diaper rash that seemingly came out of nowhere! It's a bad one...I've never seen anything like it. Nothing like sores or anything, but just really bright red and obviously very painful. She doesn't even want to sit down! We've never had severe diaper rash before (thankfully) so I don't really know what to use on something like this. We have Bag Balm and Balmex but neither one seems to be helping at all. What do you recommend? Do you have any other tips? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow, thanks so much for all your great tips! I was a little freaked that it might be a yeast infection (I didn't even know babies got them!) and I looked it up online. They said the way you can tell is that, with a yeast infection, the redness appears in the cracks and creases....a regular diaper rash usually just affects the part of the skin that's exposed to the diaper. So I checked and the redness was only on the outside. Went to the store, bought the PINXAV and within 2 days it's improved tremendously. Also doing a lot of airing out! Thanks again!

You have a lot of responses, but you could probably use all the help you can get. My daughter had really bad daiper rash when I was breastfeeding and again when she swallowed too much pool water. The thing that worked best and sounds a little strange is:
1. Wipe her with cotton balls and baby oil.
2. Dab on Mallox
3. Then put crisco (the lard like stuff) on her bum. I know it sounds weird. It works as a great barrier and has oil in it.
This was a miracle. Hope it helps

Its probably a yeast infection. You can treat it with a topical ointment that has Miconazole or Clotrimazole (Monistat, Lotrimin) Regular ointments won't help, they make it worse by keeping the area too moist. Keep her clean and dry down there. You may need to switch her diapers too. My daughter had yeast infections when we used the tighter diapers on her (pampers cruisers) but when we switched to the looser ones (pampers baby-dry) the infections stopped. The baby-dry diapers allowed more air to circulate in her groin area and stopped things from being too warm and moist, which is what causes the yeast to thrive. If it is a yeast infection the ointment should clear things up quickly. Good luck!

Hello J., The best thing I have found for diaper rash is corn starch, I know it may sound silly but it really works. It come in a box, just put some in an old powder container or use an old clean baby food jar, put some wholes in the lid, put the corn starch in it and sprinkle it on the childs bottom. you should see a huge improvement that day. I have 3 children 9,6,and 5 I used it on all their diaper rashes. let us know how it works out for you!

Advice from a mom in my moms group. Several ladies in my group have used this and claim there is nothing like it!

"THE BEST DIAPER CREAM RECIPE

My kids get BAD rashes with teething. The red open sores kind. My friend gave me the best recipe that works like magic. I always have it on hand:

The key is to not change any ingredients, it has to be these specific ones:

Aquaphor (real thick petroleum jelly) It is pricey
Original Desitin (the purple one, not the creamy in the blue bottle)
Maalox (yes, for upset stomachs)

Mix in three equal parts. I mix the Aq and Des first, then add the maalox. I usually do a little less maalox because I want it to be nice and creamy.

After a nice bath (throw a little baking soda in there) make sure his bum is completely dry and lather that on. Overnight, you will be amazed at how healed it is.

Use it after all diaper changes.

You will love it."

Hi - This has happened to me a few times with the twins. First, if you haven't yet stop using wipes they make the rash burn use a wet rag or something like that until it clears up. Also, we found this stuff called Pink Salve (or something like that) if you ask the Rx at Marc's I think they have it....this stuff is the best. Finally, leave your babies diaper off as much as possible because the air helps dry the rash out.

I know this sounds crazy, but try putting vaseline on it...LOTS of vaseline. I always put vaseline on my kids before bed at night and they hardly ever get any kind of a rash. Vaseline will giver her instant relief...it acts as a barrier on the skin to keep it from getting irritated....it should help her right away. Also let her bottom airdry for about 10 minutes....and wash her bottom with plain water and a washcloth instead of diaper wipes until it clears up. I hope it gets better soon : ) If you don't notice an improvement in a couple days, then call your doc bc it may be yeast...but I'll bet the vaseline works perfectly : )

good luck!

Hi J.,

I'm not sure if you already got these answers, but here is my advice...Our pedi. recommended using a mixture of Aquaphor cream and malox. I think it works really well, plus w/the malox it helps with the pain. I also really like Desitin. I hope your DD starts feeling better soon.

I used to use pink salve. You can get at the drug store, ask the pharmacist, it is behind the counter. Black container with gold writing if i remember correctly??? If it does not get better soon call your doctor, it could be an external yeast infection. Also she could have ate something that did not agree with her and her urine or feces is strong and irritating her skin. Make sure she drinks plenty of water to flush out her system too!:)

I too have dealt with a yeast diaper rash with my infant. After rounds of treatment with Nystatin cream from the Doctor, I finally got fed up and decided to go the natural route (which I'm more inclined to go with anyway). I did a bit of looking and found that tea tree has wonderful antifungal, antiseptic and antibiotic qualities. I purchased this product: http://www.amazon.com/Derma-E-Tree-E-Antiseptic-Creme/dp/...

Within three uses of the product, the rash is almost completely gone. Needless to say, I am very happy with it. From all that I had been reading, I also found that many use it to treat athlete's foot and facial acne as well.

Hope this helps!

Try using the Destin ointment on that rash. When my daughter was sick, she developed a nasty rash that would not gop away and she hated sitting down on her bottom also. We finally called our doctor and she called in prescription and told ust to use the destin ointment not the cream, because it would stay on here bottom longer. Well i hope that helps!!!!

My daughter was born with sensitive skin and CONSTANTLY was breaking out into diaper rashes... 1st thing I did was took her to the doctor who diagnosis eczema and a food born yeast infect that began to burn her skin to the point of light bleeding. I gave her Lots of cool baths, light layers of A&D lotions (Bag Balm and zinc based lotions were too heavy for the severe cases and the A&D is much lighter and vitamin based. We had even used straight from the shelf vitamin E oil) and cloth diapers. Occasionally we would give her a small dose of Tylenol as directed by her doctor to ease the pain and discomfort she was having.

We had to learn what she was eating that caused it to flare up, and that was a task but it proved to be beneficial to prevention ... and the cloth diapers were her only salvation as they allowed her enough air circulation where the plastic tight fitting disposables did not! I wish you luck and comfort for you're little one!

I like A&D ointment for existing diaper rashes. I've found that Desitin and the other Zinc oxide products are great for preventing a rash, but that they are too irritating on a rash that has already developed.

If possible, the best thing is to leave the diaper off as much as you can. The fresh air really seemed to help my girls.

Mix a little Aquaphor diaper rash ointment with some Maalox mint liquid (the stuff you take for an upset stomach). The Aquaphor helps the skin to heal and the Maalox takes the sting out of the diaper rash.

It sounds like your daughter may have a yeast infection. My 1-year-old had a diaper rash a few months ago that sounded exactly like this one. Here's what worked for me: I got a vaginal yeast infection cream, one designed for women with yeast infections (not the kind used with an applicator, but the kind meant for external itching). Apply the yeast infection cream first, then apply a layer of zinc oxide-based diaper rash ointment. You may even want to use a light sprinkling of corn starch powder--that helps the ointment and cream stay in place.

Diapers will need changing every hour to provide as much relief from wetness as possible. Also, if possible, let your daughter go diaperless at least once a day. (I used to have my daughter go diaperless after bowel movements--I would lay down receiving blankets and vinyl-backed cloths on the floor and just let her play there for about an hour.) You may also need to change her diaper in the middle of the night.

I know this sounds like a lot of work, but yeast infections are a bit more resilient than typical diaper rashes, and they need a more concentrated effort. My daughter's rash faded after about five days, after which I eased up a little--I didn't change her diaper in the middle of the night, and I didn't leave her diaperless as long. After another week or so you'd never have noticed there was a problem at all.

Good luck!

Hi J.,

I am a mom of four boys. Whenever we had a rash the rash creams always seemed to make it worse. The best advise I can give you is frequent diaper changes. Even though disposable diapers can hold a lot of fluid, it still lies against the child's body. Frequent changing will assist in keeping your child dry and will allow her bottom to heal.
I hope this helps.

I know I am going to spell it wrong but Pink Saav was our savior. We tried everything on my son and after trying balmex, triple paste, a&d, aveno, and who knows what else...the pink stuff was the best. Be careful not to get it on clothes because it will stain but it kicked that diaper rash out in no time. We saw HUGE improvement in less than 12 hours! I get mine from the pharmacist at Giant Eagle. They keep it behind the counter...it's that good! Good luck...

You can try Pinxav. You can get it at any drugstore, but you must go to the pharmacy. It is great to keep everything off her butt until it heals...caution, it will stain everything it gets on too!

Also, Arbonne ABC Diaper Rash cream is great too! It will help heal, and prevent, and does not stain. It is creamier and more soothing, but will take longer to get as you have to order it on line or through a consultant (2days?) and the other you can run up Walmart or something and get.

My daughter is notorious for this and these are the only 2 products that have worked for her at all!

When my son had diaper rash I would use either a TON of Vaseline or a TON of A and D ointment, NOT creamy. I would use a lot because when they pee it will repel off. If you are still using wipes stop and use a wash cloth. Even if the wipes are unscented they will still irritate the little butt, use a warm washcloth. If at all possible, let her go without a diaper as much as possible, if she doesn't move around a lot at night, that is best because it is for such a long time.
Godd Luck!

Go to any store that has a Pharmacy and ask them for it. You don't need a prescription, but they keep it behind the counter. I personally go to Marcs and buy it because it's cheaper than Walmart or Target. It's only $4.00 a tube and it works wonders. Just put it on liberally every time you change her diaper and she should be fine. I hope this works for you. Please email me and let me know how it goes. N. H.

First thing you want to do is remember what she ate or drank on Saturday. My daughter ended up being sensitive to citric acid. It is my understanding than many kids are...she couldn't have anything citrus until she was potty trained. Next...NAKED TIME. Fresh air is always best. Put a couple towels down in the crib and let her sleep naked. Also, if you find that diaper rash ointment isn't working...put vaseline on her if she has to have a diaper on....this will create a barrier between the skin and the dirty diaper. Good Luck.

J., go to CVS and get Pink Salve (it's usually kept behind the counter) and Lotramin (yes it's for feet). Either alternate putting on the pink salve and then the lotrimin or mix them together. It'll clear it right up in a day or 2. My dr. told me to do this years ago and my sisters and I swear by it. Pink Salve is the BEST diaper rash ointment around if you ask me. It's a bit more pricy but it's worth it. Oh, I also use Caldesine powder instead of baby powder. I've been using it on my daughter since she was born and she's only had diaper rash twice. Again, my sisters and I swear by this. This you can also get at CVS but it's out on the shelves usually.

We love A & D Ointment the best. Two of my four children often get horrible (open sores with bleeding) diaper rashes, and it seems to clear it up everytime. I also use it as a preventative at bedtime each night. The other thing that has worked great for us is cornstarch. Just cover the affected area with a thin coating of dry cornstarch. I thought my MIL was crazy for recommending this, but it worked! Make sure your baby doesn't have a yeast infection before trying anything though...in that case you'll need a prescription (or our doctor recommends Lotrimin cream). These have worked great for us.
