What's the Best Diaper Rash Cream?

Updated on September 23, 2009

My 14 month old has fortunately not had diaper rash, until now. Usually a little dab of cream will clear up any slight redness. She is now very red and blotchy, despite using cream for days. We've tried Mustela, Lanisoh & Triple Cream. We were running low at home so switched and her daycare had a different cream so, its possible the different creams aren't helping. Any suggestions to clear up her redness and if you've had success with a particular cream? I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for your help!

I really love Sebamed diaper rash cream. You cam buy it on the internet. It changes the ph of skin to 5.5 (neutral). It was the only cream that helped my son when he had open sores and we found he was allergic to lanolin. Lanolin is found in almost all diaper creams.

Hi M.,
It could be a yeast infection. My daughter (32 months old) gets them occasionally. If no other diaper cream is responding and she's never had a rash before, it wouldn't hurt to try Lortamin or some other anti-fungal cream. Anything you'd use for a yeast infection for yourself will work, but I found the best option to be Lotramin for athlete's foot/jock itch! Sounds really weird, but it's the same medication and the cream is stickier and stays on their skin better.
Good luck! When my daughter has a yeast infection and I use the cream it improves within half a day and is cleared up in 3 days. If you don't see this kind of improvement you might take her to the doc.

Use Desitin, the one in the purple tube. It has 40% zinc in it and that is what heals the skin. I am a mom of a wonderful 2 1/2 year old boy and when he got rashes I used different ones until I started to look a little closer to the labels and realized that Desitin in the purple tub has the most zinc than any other brand. I only saw 10% in the other companies. Don't buy the expensive stuff, save it for their bath soaps and lotions, that's what makes them smell really good. Not the butt cream like my son calls it. Good luck!

I agree with the Weleda brand products in general. The calendula is great for any owies, not just diaper rash or rash prevention. But if you need something stronger, try Longs brand zinc with 40% zinc. It's thick.

I mostly try to stay away from all the mineral oil, so now for prevention I agree with everyone to dry baby's bottom, but I use plain olive oil or coconut oil as a barrier & they provide moisture. Also consider what she's eating (or if you're nursing at all, what you're eating) that could be coming out in her skin. My son had horrible rashes on his bottom. We tried everything. It wasn't until 2 months after his sister was born with horrible colic that I took dairy out of our diet. Suddenly no more colic for her and no more rashes for him.

Best wishes!

I have found Desitin to work best because it is SO thick that it stays on the rash protecting from wetness and further rubbing or irritation while it heals. It does sting a little when you put it on, but heals diaper rash pretty quickly. Good luck!

Hello,

If it is diaper rash (no harm in checking with your dr.), I'd say the most important thing is getting rid of moisture. Give her as much air time as possible. Make sure she is completely dry before applying the ointment, otherwise you will just be locking moisture in. We use baby vaseline - it's more about creating a barrier then anything else.

Good luck!

Wow...I can't believe no one has recomended Desitin! I would recomend good ol' Desitin. Its been around forever which leads me to beleive they know what they are doing : - ) I use to purple tube (thick) at night for longer stay, and the blue tube (creamy, less thick) during the day because it wipes off easier between diapers. Every baby bottom is different....also try simple "air it out" as well, good luck!

Boudreau's Butt Paste is really good. Also, if the cream isn't working, you may want to try an anti-fungal instead. We had been treating what we thought was a diaper rash on my daughter, and the cream didn't help. The daycare tried an anti-fungal and it was better in a couple days.

I use aquaphor and I love it. I bought a whole bunch, and then my baby rarely rashes. I still have a whole bunch. Amazon has it for almost 2 for 1 pricing.

Have you tried soaking her butt in warm water? That's supposed to help better than any creams. If these methods don't work, it's probably something she's eating. Try feeding her some yogurt. Maybe twice a day for a few days. Give her a chance to clear up any yeasts. Does it seem to bother her? If so, maybe consider a doctor's visit, if nothing else works.

I would also reccomend using a hair dryer on cool/slight warm setting to dry the area, its amazing you can see the redness go away as you use the dryer, your baby might be a little frightend at first with the noise mine was, but once they see it won't hurt they seem to relax a little.
Best of luck.

I know you've received a ton of responses but I'm too lazy to read them all to see if anyone has suggested it may be a yeast infection. It doesn't show like our yeast infections, it's a bad diaper rash (boys get it too) that won't go away w/o a prescription. If not, Aquafor is wonderful b/c it wipes away easily at diaper changes.

A lot of people have recommended Boudreaux's Butt Paste, so maybe it works fine for other kids. But both my kids didn't respond very well to it. It was too wet and creamy and would rub off too easily onto the diaper. My all time favorite is the Aveeno brand. It is thick and dryer and really sticks well to that rash, clearing it up in about a day or so. Of course, only apply to a dry little bum!

Having worked with children for over twenty years, I've noticed that each child reacts differently to the various creams. What works great for one child may irritate another, so you need to find the right one for your daughter. I know that doesn't sound too helpful... but, having said that, here are the ones I've found most often work well: and these are in my order of preference... Boudreaux's Butt Cream, Desitin, and plain Vaseline.

I use hydrocortizone OINTMENT (not cream) per my doctor's recommendation. Usually redness will clear up within 24 hours with it. It can thin the skin, however, so it's best not to use it for more than a few days at a time.

Hi M.,
We are just getting a yeast diaper rash to go away. Apply Lotrimin cream to totally dry skin let dry/rub in then apply a seal (desitin like cream). If it makes a difference it is probablly yeast. I like the mixing monistat idea with the lotrimin (I'll try that next time). Try not using wipes and use a wet paper towel. Set up the hair dryer by the changing table and dry her bottom before applying cream. Also, you can soak her but in a warm baking soda bath and then let air as long as possible 3x's per day. As far as a basic diaper rash, just use what ever cream you like. Lots are good. I like triple paste. I heard aquaphor is really good and butt paste. For the yeast, to seal in the lotrimin cream the triple paste did not work well enough so I tried the store brand desitin and it worked much better. It never hurts to let the Dr take a quick look so you know for sure what you are dealing with.

Hi M.,

Both my two kids have very sensitive bottoms in the first year of life. I ended up using paper towel and water instead of wipes and putting diaper rash cream with every diaper change even when there is no rashes. If your daughter's redness is not yeast infection, what you want to make sure is that the skin is dry before applying the cream. To us, it's not so much which brand of cream to use, but making sure that the skin is dry so the moisture is not trapped under the cream, which makes the rash even worse. I use a small travel hairdryer (not very strong power) to dry my kid's bottom after it's cleaned before putting on the cream. Alternatively, a pediatrician suggested using cornstarch-based (not talc) baby powder to absorb all the moisture before putting on the cream. The brand we use is Desitin, but we've found that other brands work just as well for us. Good luck and I hope the redness goes away soon.

Sounds like a yeast infection. Take her to the Pediatrician - they will probably tell you to put Lamisil Vagisil or something similar on it. My son still gets them when it's hot and he's almost 5. Put a thick slathering of Vaseline over the medication to seal it in - otherwise it just soaks into the diaper. I learned taht whenever my son was sick or on medication to mix my own concoction of vaseline, anti-fungal cream and zinc oxide(like balmex or desitin) and smear it on his butt like cream cheese on a Noah's Bagel to prevent a flare up. Also Aveen makes a nice oatmeal bath for babies that can help soothe it if it hurting her - makes a mess in the tub but really helps - good for bug bites too. ;)

Boudroux Butt Paste is the best kind that I have found---it will clear up almost immediately after 1 application. If it doesn't then she probably has a yeast infection. Combine monistat with hydrocortisone 1% 1/2 and 1/2 and apply at least 3x daily.

Good luck,

I can recommend something very simple that works beautifully. Eggwhite !!
After you clean your baby's bottom, dry it off very well. Dab on nice cold eggwhite, it is very soothing. Then let the egg white dry fully, otherwise you are locking in moisture. I bought a little fan from Longs for bottom drying and it works great :-) Once it is dry, apply a thick layer of Desitin, just to make sure there is added protection. What the egg white really does is seal the skin and prevent moisture and irritants from penetrating through. Do this with every diaper change and within a day or two you will see the skin heal.

The most crucial time to apply the egg white is when you first see the initial redness.... at this point you can nip it in the bud or butt, so to speak. ( Of course this applies to subsequent diaper rashes, not your current one ). My daughter always starts to get a rash before cutting a tooth and we do the egg white every time and the skin never breaks down as a result. It is is life saver, believe me.

I hope this helps.

V.

Please excuse me if this is a repeat, but assuming you've eliminated the possibility of a yeast infection (doc visit), the best way to clear up a standard diaper rash is cornstarch.
