I am sorry if this is a stupid question, but I wonder if this has something to do with my son's stuffy nose. I have a RELI-ON cool-mist humidifer. I pretty much run it everynight in his room. I change the water every night and change the filter once a month as recommended. I clean the parts that are dishwasher safe once a week. However, I hear other mom's saying they are cleaning their's out with vinegar. How do I do this? Are you cleanign jsut the parts that are dishwasher safe with vinegar or putting the vinegar in with the water? Help please!! Again I am sorry..I know this is a dumb ?.

What can I do next?

in the day time when you are not running it. fill it with plain white vinegar and let it run for several hours. turn off and let set til cool then empty and rinse you can if you want reuse the vinegar. this will loosen any of the mineral deposits that are in the elements. it also works good for those vases in the house and ice cube trays that are not working anymore because of the mineral build up.

I do what Melissa B. Does, just let plain white vinegar sit in the bottom part and disolve the minerals for a while, then I scrub it with a toothbrush.

You just pour vinegar into the bottom part where the water would naturally go through the machine. Let it sit for about an hour. It will release all the mineral deposits, then just rinse well, being careful not to get the water where it doesn't belong. Vinegar will basically do the same thing that CLR does for mineral or hard water deposits.

Not dumb...I didn't even think to clean the humidifier until I noticed pink slimy stuff inside...DUH!!

Look at your owner's manual - it should provide pretty detailed steps on the recommended cleaning process.

I have never used vinegar. I use warm water and bleach - let it sit for about 30 mins then rinse really well.
