The last 2 days my coffee has tasted really BAD. I don't have the best coffee maker, but I've never really cleaned it either. I was just wondering if I could clean it or should I just replace it?
Hello K., I asked my sister what she does to clean the coffee pots in the coffee shop she works in and she told me, salt and ice water and then wash with soap and water after. she said that should help if not she said to clean the coffee maker with a coffee maker cleaner you can get from any store. It will come in a little pack.It cost about $2 to $3 or use white vinager and water ( half and half ) about a cup each run it in the maker as if you are going to make a pot of coffee. You may have to run it many times to clean it really good. Then plain water a full pot after that. Hope this helps. T.

Try running through a pot of white vinegar (this removes the oils from the coffee which are left behind and start to smell and taste bad) and then just plain water. You can do this once in a while to keep it fresh.

Looks like you have a lot of responses but I clean my coffee pot with vinegar. I just fill the water tank with about a cup of vinegar and the rest water then I let it run through a normal cycle. I do a few cycles of water only after the vinegar cycle to get the taste out.

Try cleaning it with white vinegar. Just pour a cup or so in where the water goes and let it run through it's process. It may stink up the house, but it will get all that coffee build up out of there.

If you haven't cleaned it at all, I would take a full 10-12 cups on distilled white vinegar (use your coffee carafe to measure it), and run it through and make sure you have a filter in the filter basket. After it's done, run a full carafe of water through, then run another full carafe of water through to make sure you don't have any vinegar aftertaste in your coffee. You can dilute the vinegar with water, but I don't recommend it being as you haven't cleaned it yet.

Epinions says:
To clean your coffeemaker first you need to put a filter into the filter basket. If yours is the kind that doesnt take paper filters disregard this part. Then pour an entire pot of vinegar into the pour spout where you usually would pour the water. Turn your machine on. If yours has a clean setting use that. Wait for all the vinegar to drip down then pour it out. The vinegar will also act as a deodorizer for your drain. Next run two pots of water through to flush all traces of vinegar out. You will notice a definite difference in your next pot of coffee!

Don't throw it away. Try this, it's SO simple! Take a bottle of white vinegar and run it through the brewer. Then follow it with one or two cycles of plain water to rinse. That's all you need to do to clean it up and coffee should taste much better after that!

I've always used vinegar. Just put it right into the coffee pot and brew it. It does stink really bad but it works. Then you will have to brew just plain water through it once I always do it twice just to get rid of the vinegar but it really does work.

Try running a couple Tablespoons of vinegar through it with about a cup of water per Tablespoon of vinegar. Then run just strait water through on another cycle. That should help to clean it on the inside and get your coffee tasting better.

K., Run a cup of white vinegar with the rest of the pot filled with water through your coffee maker. Turn it off half way through the cycle and let it sit for awhile and then restart it. Leave a clean filter in the coffee maker when doing this.
Run a few full pots of water through it after until you cannot smell the vinegar anymore.
Have a great day...

you might try running a cycle using vinegar, the acid in the vinegar will eat away at any buildup. I do this to mine at least once a week, but I have well water, so there is a lot of mineral buildup. Also, you can srub the actual coffee pot out with vinegar or using about a tsp. of salt, and using half a lemon as a "scrubber" which really works! Good luck :)

I always run vinegar through my coffee pot to clean it. My mom always did that, I'm not really sure what it does but she always did it. After I run vinegar through I run two pots of just straight water to get the vinegar out of it. Don't know if that will help, but i guess it's worth a try.

You can run some vinegar and water through the coffee pot. After you run the vinegar and water through, do another brew with just water to get the vinegar out of there. Works perfect. I usually do this every 6 months with my coffee pot.

Your best best is to put ice-cubes in it, a little bit of water and salt. I worked in a restaurant for over 10 years and that works the best (you can use vinegar also but this way with the lemon you don't have that vinegar smell all over). Just swished it around for a little bit, dump it, then clean with a paper towel. Run some water thru it then let it air dry. After that it should be ready just like brand new! I do this at home also. Just make sure that the pot is not ice cold before you start using it only because if you try to make coffee and it is ice cold, the pot can break! Have a good day.

Try running vinegar throught the pot (just like you are brewing a pot, but put vinegar instead of water, and no grounds!)
After the vinegar has gone through, run water through the pot to rinse the vinegar. That should help.

Try cleaning it first. All you have to do is run plain white vinegar through it. Try half white vinegar and half water, pour it in and turn it on just like you were making coffee. Then run plain water through a couple times to get the vinegar taste out. Heating the vinegar like that makes the smell pretty strong, but it's effective.

Hi K., yeah it is a good idea to clean the coffe pot out. If you put some distilled vingager in the water container and no filter, let it run thru 2 times then run clean water thru it 2 times. It doesnt have the most plesant smell but it cleans it out really nicely.

You can clean your coffee pot, you don't have to replace it. At the grocery store probably in the isle that has the coffee and things, you should be able to find a cleaner. I think it's called drip it?? that works really well for me.

There is something that they sell in stores that you can run through your coffee maker. you can also clean the pot part out by putting icecubes and a bunch of salt in it and swirling it around. It will take the scale off the glass and make it nice and shiny.
Course, if it is really bad, you could scrap it and spend the $40 for a new one too I suppose.
Good luck!

I do not drink coffee myself, but my MIL does and she runs white vinegar through it to clean it. Also, you'll want to run clean water through it after the vinegar so you don't have vinegar tasting coffee. If you have not cleaned the coffee maker before maybe do this a few times and if it doesn't do the trick, get a new one.

Fill the water resevoir about 1/2 full of vinegar and turn the coffee maker on. Run it through several times each time with a clean filter. Rinse the machine by running several pots of clean water through it. It makes the kitchen smell like vinegar, but it really works. Much cheaper than the "clean your coffeemaker chemical solutions" that they sell.

if you have never cleaned it out, you may have to do this a few times: run cool tap water and vinegar (atleast half and half mix) through the coffee pot, letting it do it's whole cycle. sometimes you have to do it a few times, and i do this atleast once a month to keep my coffee tasting good. i managed a coffee roasting co.'s retail and coffee serving shop, and we did this with french presses, airpots, coffeemakers, EVERYTHING!
hope this helps....

Hi K.,
You could try to clean it, that may help. We have really hard water at our house and in the past when I have cleaned coffee pots soon after they die. So now I tend to go with really cheap pots and just replace them when they get yucky.
Have a great day!

Coffee makers should be cleaned regularly. They grow mold and other bacteria that could be harmful, not to mention make coffee taste bad. If you have never cleaned it, my advice would be to buy a new one (can get a cheap one for 10.00 at Walmart)because the mold in it may not come out now. Once a week Clean it like this:
Remove Filter (unless it is a reusable one)
Add vinegar to the water reservoir until 1/4 full. Fill with water until full.
Run the coffee maker.
Turn off the coffee maker, let cool for about 10 minutes.
Run the vinegar and water mixture through the coffee maker again. Let cool for another 10 minutes.
Run plain water through the coffee maker; let cool for another 10 minutes, repeat.
Hand-wash the carafe and filter basket in soapy water.
Good luck!

Hi K.,
Fill the water reservoir about 1/4 way full with vinegar (3 cups worth if it's a 12-cup machine, 2-1/2 for a 10-cup, etc.), then water the rest of the way. Run it through twice, then discard. Fill the reservoir with clean water and run that through to get rid of any residual vinegar. That should do it for you! Hope this helps.
