Maybe your dishwasher isn't draining all the wash water out and the leftover water is turning. You should probably have it looked at. Normal dishwashers won't grow mildew. The gross thought is that all your "clean" dishes aren't really clean.

A third vote for bleach. Spray it in like someone else suggested, then run the rinse cycle of even a full cycle with the dishwasher empty. Your dishwasher might not be draining properly, so watch for water sitting in the bottom after you run it. Otherwise, just leave it open for about an hour or so after each time you run it to let it dry.

Run a cycle with a little CLR in the empty dishwasher on very hot. This will also remove any lime deposits. If you can't find CL, you can use lime-a-way, but CLR works better.

Bleach works, but I was told that if I had a dishwasher that required a rinse agent, I had to use it. Otherwise, mildew would form.

Sounds like a draining issue. About once a month I use the Jet-Dry dishwasher cleaner. This seems to break up and dissolve any mineral deposits causing the drain to be blocked (although I'm going to try the CLR treatment listed below this month). And about once a year, my DH dismantles the dishwasher and gives it a thorough cleaning (we use our dishwasher a lot!). And I started putting in 1/2-cup white vinegar whenever I run the washer, it really gets the dishes clean and streak-free. And if I'm cleaning any plastic-ware, I add another 1/2 cup during the rinse cycle and it removes any residual odors (even the soapy smell).

Did you try spraying it down with bleach? After you've emptied the dishawasher, leave it open to dry completely.
