Hello friends, . For the last 3 weeks Ive been having constant lower back pain that seems worse when I lay down, or go from sitting to standin,g I thought maybe I sprained my back lifting my kids, but Ive never had back pain this long.. I went to the e.r on sunday b/c I just didn't know what else to do and an ultrasound showed I have a 4 inch cyst on the back of my uterus. I asked if it was on the outside or inside of my uterus and she looked at me like i have 3 heads, so i asked again and she said it's on the outside but going in to my uterus, i don't know what part of my question confused her. So anyways she said it's the type of cyst you just leave alone unless it gets bigger and cause more problem. I asked her if there was a name to this cyst and she says it's just a cyst. Anyone been told before that they had one of these "cysts" and did it cause pain like mines? I also get a sharp pain on my right hip bone. I've had sciatica before and I don't think it's that. TIA!!

What can I do next?

You should consult your OBGYN. 4 inches is pretty big. I would have someone double check the film, just to be safe. I have one that is 2cm. After getting my first ultrasound on it, the nurse told me it was 2 inches. I have a friend who is a radiologist review it and it was 2 cm. That was about 10 years ago. I had a CT scan 2 weeks ago and it is still there, same size. Every once in a while I can feel it in there. I am told it will go away when I hit menopause.

No, I haven't. How about you call your obstetrician? Emergency room doctors are often residents.

I think it's quite possible, by the way, that you misinterpreted her "looked at you like you have six heads" expression. She was probably just formulating her response in her head before speaking.

I've had many friends with fibroid cysts IN the uterus. Some cause persistent trouble; some are just quietly there. The troublesome ones tend to end up in surgery.

I've had ovarian cysts, which can be pretty painful ("double over in the grocery store" painful) and can cause constant abdominal discomfort and back pain. I had laparoscopic surgery to scrape off a couple of particularly bad ones that persisted for months. I've had others apparently come and go over a period of a few months with less discomfort.

I haven't heard of cysts outside the uterus. I hope you get relief one way or another.

I had a fibroid on the outside of my uterous, but the doc said it wasn't causing any problems. I think the ob took it off when she delivered my daughter c-section because it wasn't there when my regular doc delivered my son.

I know my mom had them and they were so debilitating that she actually ended up in bed for a large part of time. She finally had her uterus removed and has be so happy since. But, she was done having kids. I have had several ovarian cysts and those are a pain too! Like oh my goodness pain, so I feel for you!

I would call your normal ob and talk to them. You may not even have to go in, but just let them know that you are still in pain and need to know some options. I think they can use ultrasound to break them up now. If I remember right, but I might not be. Good luck, I hope you feel better really soon!

I had one when I was pregnant about 10 years ago. It didn't cause me any problems or pain at all. My body absorbed it before delivery.

Pain on the hip bone sounds unrelated. Perhaps you should go to the chiropractor.

Good luck.

Hi Love,

Did the cyst show up on MRI or ultrasound? MRI is not the always the best imaging tool for reproducting cysts -- the diagnosis should be confirmed by ultrasound. Regardless, you should go see your gynecologist and to get a confirmation of the diagnosis. 4" is a pretty big cyst, and bears further investigation. If you've had any other symptoms like intestinal bloating, nausea, and feeling full much sooner than normal when you eat make sure to mention these to the gynecologist as well.
