Advice on Buying Children's Wooden Table and Chair Set (Not White)

Hi everyone -
I've been searching online for a good quality wooden set. I don't want to spend more than $150 - even that is pretty steep! We have a small fold up metal leg table with wipeable top, and fold up chairs - but it's just not sturdy enough for my active second son!
Many reviews have had trouble with set up because holes for screws aren't aligned properly etc. I have explored Lipper and A+ childsupply brands - rectangle about 48l x 24w x 22h, and then chairs - definitely want cross bars underneath connecting the legs so legs are steady and hopefully won't break. I am happy to look at other mediums instead of wood if someone has an idea.
Please help with suggestions or other brands I might look at.
Thanks a tonne.

Hi C.,
I just went through the ordeal of looking for a table and chairs for my 3 year old because he liked to eat on the coffee table. All the ones at the stores were expensive or had bad reviews. I searched on Craiglist and found and very nice wooden table with 2 chairs. It has a train, airplane and bus painted on it and my 3 year old son loves it. I paid $50.00 but had to drive to Deerfield to get it. It was worth it.

Check Ikea. We got one there really inexpensively, and it held up wonderfully. And I put it together myself, no problems with assembly, whatsoever. And they had a few to choose from.

I found an awesome table at a local antique store for around $10. It had a nice solid top that wrapped down a bit so there were no sharp corners. I bought two old Sunday school chairs and cut a few inches off the legs so they were the right height, and painted everything to coordinate. It has been great. You could try that and just make something that works for you.

IKEA!! We got a small wooden table and chair set from there last Christmas, and it's very sturdy! They have several cute options.

I have a set from Ikea that's molded plastic & very sturdy. They have round & rectangle tables in a few colors (blue, pink, greens) as well as chairs & stools. Can't remember the name of the line, but it's easy to find! Good luck. :)

Another vote for Ikea! We have this one: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60153702

Have had it for four years and my kids are very active. They literally climb on it and I have had no problems. My paint job is different, and has suffered because we do a lot of crafts on it. But it's still really sturdy.

We didn't get the wooden chairs though. We had other ones and they didn't hold up to sticky fingers and paint so we got the Mamut: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30168644 I am shocked how sturdy they are. I have a sitter who is on the heavier side and I found out she had been sitting in these with the kids! Still fine (and she was told not to sit in them!)

I got one from costco, and it is great. It doesn't have cross bars, but it is really sturdy and was very easy to put together.

I got the white one for my 5 year old daughter last year. We needed a able to put her dollhouse on and its very sturdy. I think it comes in several other wood finishes. I also had it shipped to store to save on shipping.

I'd say Ikea too, even their really cheap one -the white laminate table top & seats and unfinished wood. I painted the wood with some acrylic paint and am considering doing chalkboard paint or that new magnetic paint on the the table top. We've had it for 3 years and I've caught my son (age 4) kneeling on the table and I've (bad mommy LOL) used the chair as a step stool before.

there are a few options
1. buy a sturdy wood table off craigslist and then cut the legs down so they are the right height for a kid's chair, this should cost you only about $25 to $50. Look for a table that has 4 legs, not a pedastal table.

2. check craigslist - enter "daycare" into the search box with for sale as the category, every week or so stuff comes up and I've seen both tables and chairs on there many times.

3. Check out IKEA but you have to go in person and feel the items cause there is a huge variance of sturdiness
