My 38 month old son says that he sees dots when he closes his eyes to go to sleep. Has anyone dealt with this before? Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? Thanks.

What can I do next?

I've always seen dots, too. I used to imagine they were atoms. I guess a lot of people have this! Please don't worry about it.

Sounds normal... I know I see them on the back of mine. Also your son might be looking too long in light bulbs or other light sources; it will burn temporary spots into the eyeballs which may startle him if he doesn't know what that is.

I thought that was normal too :) I see colored dots, dark blue, redish... not like polka dot dots. That's just light passing through your eyes or your eyes reflection the transition from light to dark (if that makes sense).

you mean the show on the back of your eyelids ;) !! when my son cant sleep i tell him to focus on the show on the back of his eyelids and tell me what he sees. pretty soon he's asleep. tell him to squeeze his eyes tight then relax and see how the show changes!

If you pay attention when you go to sleep, you'll see the same or similar thing. I believe it's the rods and cones in your eyes (they pick up light and enable us to see pictures). I think it happens more when it's very dark.

Me too.
If you close your eyes... and concentrate... and look at your eyelids( well your inner eyelids)... then yes, you can 'see' dots.
I used to do that as a kid, and imagine it was stars and what not.
I thought it was normal. Even now, as as adult, it happens.
Right now I told my daughter to close her eyes and tell me what she sees and she said "YAH uh huh, and I see color dots too!...." because well we are in a well lit room right now.

It happens.

UNLESS... what your child is seeing.... is something else.

Yes, we all do. Also, has he been staring directly at lights? Don't do that--it burns holes in the retina.

I have it too. I asked about it once since I also tend to see "floaters" and was told it is normal. It has to do with the light passing through your eyes or reflecting off your eyes. If I put a cold cloth over my eyes, it is sometimes almost like a kaleidoscope type image usually--which is what made me ask in the first place.

I used to see dots when I was a kid. I don't think it's anything, as long as it's not scaring him. (Long story as to why they scared me.)
