Yeast?

My almost 3 year old girl if fully PTrained, even at night. Today at bath time I noticed that her privates were red, like diaper rash red. She didn't want me to touch it. She doesn't complain about it hurting, or that it hurts for her to go potty. For the most part I let her wipe herself. She doesn't smell funny, and no discharge. I think she may have a yeast infection???
I put some rx diaper cream on it that I had gotten when she had yeast on her bottem, and I put some triple paste on top. I cleaned her really good before I did it.
Has anyone delt with this?
PS> She just finished 2 rounds of Antibiotics for sinus infection...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I gave her some lacobaciilus(sp) this moning in some milk, and told daycare to help her wipe, and help teach her how to get dry all the way on her own.
She already is starting to look better.
Thanks to every for your advice

My five year old was potty trained at 18 months, but she tends to show occasional redness also. It can be very sensitive. I avoid all bubble bath products. What seems to work is neutralizing the water with baking soda. I bought a huge bag from Sam's Club, and keep it in the linen closet. It really helps. After the bath, I have her put aquaphor lotion on afterwards. It coats but doesn't make her feel like she is putting baby paste on. It goes away quickly. I don't know why it happens, but I think sometimes she doesn't wipe as well as she should and/or she hasn't had as much water to drink lately.

Your daughter is probably much better today. If she does end up on anti-biotics again, you may want to consider Might-a-mins for her. It's a children's vitamin that she can drink that includes all of her nutrients and pro-biotics (the good bacteria) that anti-biotics remove from her system.

Get them at www.marketamerica.com/thevoiceoftruth.

Have a nice day!

Well, I haven't dealt with this in my daughter, but I get yeast infections everytime I use antibiotics. I would see a doctor. They probably have different meds than the over the counter stuff. Hope all turns out ok!

do you put bubbles in her bath water? that is very bothersom to the privite area. try using a very mild soap like dove and don't let her soak in the tub thats the worst for it. i am a firm believer in corn starch. just a dusting, it has worked for me in the past

Could be. Antibiotics can cause yeast to get out of balance and out of control. Especially since it sounds like she has had a yeast infection before, she could just be very prone to them. Many, many times when I call in an antibiotic for a patient, they request yeast meds, too, knowing from previous experience that they will end up needing it.

Also, if she is not wiping completely dry, it's just creating more of a yeast-friendly environment. You may want to help her for a few days, getting her really dry if you haven't already. I would def. call the ped and ask, but if you use the Rx for yeast, use it alone so it has the best chance of working quickly!

Good luck!

Probably what happened is the antibiotics killed all the good bacteria in her system. The good bacteria keeps the yeast in check so we don't get yeast infections. With all of the bacteria gone the yeast is now able to irritate her skin. Your probably doing the best thing for her. It should heal on its own. If not the best thing to do is talk to her doctor. There are some things you could find at the natural foods store.

It's a good chance she has a yeast infection if she was on antibiotics. Because she's only 3, I'd recommend taking her to the drs.

Have you been giving her bubble baths? Sometimes soap will irratate that area. I never give my girls a bubble bath after the last yeast infection. And not cleaning it properly.

One way to tell if it is yeast is she will have a speckled rash. If she has a speckled rash, diaper cream will make it worse the yeast will infest and start bleeding. You need to take her to the doctor. They can perscrip a cream that won't let the rash infest. And it works really well. i hope it helps

Yup...sounds like it. Certain antibiotics do cause them. Check with your doc.

That certainly sounds like a yeast infection, esp. since she just finished antibiotics. You might want to have it checked out by a pediatrician, or at least give them a call and describe the symptoms.

B. and all - I just wanted to add some experience of my own .
I was using baby powder with corn starch and made my daughter so much worse -the doctor told me that the cornstarch in the powder was FEEDING the yeast ! yikes!
You may want to look for a powder clear of cornstarch .

I would recommend getting her on a probiotic. My 2 year old son takes a multi-vitamin/mineral powder each day that also contains a prebiotic and probiotic. Here is the link http://www.shaklee.net/dorenzo/product/20635. There are many benefits to using these products, one is to boost the immune system! Let me know if you would like me to send you more information. I have many articles I can send you! ANGIE ____@____.com

Poor baby!! She could have a little yeast infection from taking the anti-biotics. Give her lots of yogurt.

Go to the health food store and get some probiotics. They have some specially for kids. That will replace the good bacteria that she lost taking the antibiotics. It's completely safe. I put it in my 4 month old's bottle after a round of antibiotics for an ear infection.

Good luck,

Check with your pediatrician...especially after antibiotics.

Just an additional note though: My girls (6 & 3 yrs) every once in a while just get a redness on the outer private area and I use Aquaphor cream after washing with warm water, which works to clear up the redness very quickly. They also sometimes get it and don't complain about pain, it just looks red. So that's what I use periodically. Also, with your daughter still pretty young, I would wipe her still. Sometimes with urine, but usually with most bowel movements, I will wet the toilet paper, so be sure all the waste is cleaned off her body. Also, they sometimes forget the "front to back" rule, so it's good to stay on her until you know she's doing it right every time.

Hi B. ~ I dealt with this in my daughter and a friend of mine suggested that I make sure she was wiping and wiping completely after she uses the bathroom. If they don't wipe well they stay moist and since yeast grows in warm moist places it is a perfect environment. Also my friends Dr. recommened changing their undies twice a day. After my friend and I did these things with our daughters neither of us dealt with it again.

Good for you for giving her probiotics. My kids love yogurt (I only buy Stonyfield Farm Organic), so they get there probiotics there, plus I'll add a probiotic powder to their drinks. There is one slight problem though, which you may have already figured out. The probiotics will definately help when she is on antibiotics, however with most probiotics (except yogurt), it will list on the bottle NOT to take them within two hours of taking antiobiotcs. So just be mindful when giving them to your daughter. Good luck!
