My DD of 5 1/2 months has a relly bad rash that seems to be painful when she goes number 1 or number 2. I have been using Aveeno and that has worked well in the past but doesn't seem to be working this time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks again to all you Mamma's out there, you are real angels! I used the lotrimon and got some A & D ointment and the rash is almost gone! She is once again my happy little girl!

Aww, poor little thing. My son has gotten some bad ones too but here's what I did that worked GREAT...
Give her as much "air" time as possible- no diaper on.
Don't use any medications, creams, lotions, etc- most of them contain harmful ingredients that we can't even pronounce.
When it's real bad use unpetroleum jelly. It works like vasoline (providing a layer of protection and soothing releif) without the dangers of vasoline & mineral oil that is bad for baby.
For maintenance, you HAVE to pick up a jar of organic coconut oil!! The stuff works wonders!! It is sold in cooking sections at grocery stores. Coconut oil is antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial, and an antioxidant!!
All those "baby" products out there are generally not safe and if mothers really knew what was in them and the harm they cause, I'm confident they would never buy another bottle.
Take Care!

It's most likely not just diaper rash, but a yeast infection. My pedi said if it's just red, it's diaper rash, if it's blotchy, it's most likely a yeast infection, which is very common when babies take antibiotics, and you'll have to get a perscription cream to clear it up.

I agree that it is VERY likely a yeast infection and can be very painfull. Gently clean and coat area with an ointiment that is for yeast infections, Lotrimin AF is great.
I have an in-home daycare and deal with this a lot.
I have also found that if you give a spoonfull of Yogurt with each dose of meds that it helps prevent or reduces the chance of yeast infections. It also helps with the loose bowels that is caused by some antibiotics.
Hope this helps

I know it's been a few days and you have great suggestions. It is definitely yeast. If you take her to the dr tell them you want Nystatin ointment. It's made for yeast and only one of two doses will fix her up. My DD had a huge yeast infection from antibiotics and was miserable till I got the right medicine.

You have gotten great advice but also it helps with mine if I don't use the baby wipes while the rash is still there. Just clean the bottom with a wet washcloth instead and instead of wiping, which can be really painful for them sometimes, just try to dab it until it is clean. Also as some others have suggested, keep their diaper as dry as possible even if it means changing her every hour and if possible let her bottom air out (no diaper). Usually knowing in advance that this happens to my kiddos too, I always give mine yogurt (check with your pedi on how soon you can give it to your daughter) while they are on the antibiotic and also treat their bottom before the rash develops.

Sometimes my baby had a yeast infection, sometimes he didn't. I think Dr. Smith's is the best by far if it is not a yeast infection. If it is yeast the Dr. Smith's won't clear it up, you'll have to use the lotrimin or get an Rx for nystantin. Also, the probitics suggested by another mom will really help. I've had great luck at Sprout's getting help with that when I wasn't sure what to buy. We bought one for babies that you can just put a tiny scoop of powder in their milk or food once a day. Good luck.

It could be that it is a yeast infection and not a regular rash. My boys used to get them after taking antibiotics. The Dr told us not to use any cream with Zinc Oxide because it actually feed the yeast. He suggested that we use A & D ointment. If that does not clear it up you may call them and see if you can use a anti fungal on it to see if that helps.
Of course lots of changed to keep her really dry will really help.

We had the same issue. The doc actually prescribed some cream, so you could go that route. It didn't work for us any more than regular diaper rash creams. Our best luck was soaking in warm water (no soap), air drying, and then using plain vaseline or protroleum jelly (splg?) then diapering. Also, frequent diaper changes, even if not wet/dirty, and reapply vaseline seemed to help.

My daughter just finished amox. and had a yeast infection from it. She will often get them with any antibiotic she is on. It is easy to treat, but you also want to be certain it isn't something other than a yeast infection. If it is a yeast infection, lotrimin, twice daily is what our pediatrician has us use. You can get nystatin or vusion, but hey are more expensive options that require a prescription. When we apply the lotrimin (just regular lotrimin), we apply a thick layer of diaper rash cream on top of it (we like dr. smiths or triple paste, but A & D works as well as others...and it is more to keep the lotrimin on there longer). I agree with the pro-biotic from the refrigeration section....we like SPROUTS as it is the closest to us.

My neighbor's twin boys had bad rashes and Cook's Children's Hospital recommended Dr. Smith's to her.

It could be a yeast infection, Every time I have had to take antibiotics I get a yeast infection. It doesn't always look like one and can look like a diaper rash. It is very easy to have a build up of yeast in your body and not know it. I had all kinds of health problems due to the amount of yeast I had in mt digestive track. You can go to any health food store and get Probiotics and take them on an empty stomach each morning. They make them for babies, I have been taking them for the last 2 years and have cleared up a life time of problems. My daughter gives baby ones to her dog every day who has an immune deficiency and the dog has not been sick since. Look up the info on Probiotics and see what it says about your immune system and the effects of an overgrowth of yeast in your body. Good luck. L.

LOVE Dr. Smiths, Triple Paste and Boudreaux's.. but when my son (8/26/08) had surgery and IVs with lots of antibiodics, he had a TERRIBLEdiaper rash - so bad, I thought it would end up bleeding.
The trick for us per our peditrician, was to wipe his bottom with washcloth that was wet and had soap suds from an antibaterial soap and then rinse with wet/no soap cloth and pat dry. Then we put on Lotrimen (yes, the fungus creama for foots & such) with vaseline on top. This helped tons. I would always wash with the cloth (stay away from your wet wipes) and then find myself starting to alternate between the lortimen/vaseline mixture & Triple Paste.
The Triple Paste and Dr. Smith's are a bit expensive, but I've always uesd Dr. Smith with my first two and added Triple Paste & Boudreaux to my choices when changing the baby daily.
Good luck,

Put it on liberally on any rash during every diaper change. I am amazed it usually works overnight.

MY grown daughter has a drastic allergy to amoxicillan, dating from an experience in high school in which she was exposed, through wearing a brand-new birthday present, a white fluffy terry-cloth robe immediately after a shower, and all the places where the robe touched her damp warm skin erupted into a huge, horrible, expanding rash, one that itched and stung like bee stings for weeks. Took her to a doctor, who pronounced it a chemical burn and gave her steroids to turn down the volume of the overreaction, which gradually subsided. From that time on, she's been unable to take amoxicillan, getting a comparable rash each time a prescription was given, and began to realize that she must avoid it like the plague.
If your baby daughter has already reacted to it, clearly you need to never give it to her again. Who knows why the reaction? But Amoxocillan is clearly a bad drug for some people. Bless her heart!

A yeast infection is very common after being on antibiotics because the good bacteria that normally wards off this fungus (which is ever present)is killed along with the bad bacteria. Have you ever tried butt paste? I have tried all kinds of diaper rash creams and this one is my favorite. It gets rid of everything really fast. It seems though that your kiddo has a yeast rash (because the antibiotic wipe him off of his natural skin bacteria that keeps nasty rashes like this to spread). If the butt paste doesn't work try to put natural yogurt on his bottom and leave him without a diaper for a few minutes and then wipe the yogurt off and use the cream. The yogurt is good for yeast rashes.

MOst likely the rash is a yeast infection. Antibiotics mean "anti-life" so it doesn't discriminate against the bacteria in the body whether it's good or bad. So, it threw off the balance of the bacteria in the body and it made a prime opportunity for yeast to take over. If you're still breastfeeding, start taking a good probiotic ("pro-life"), which can be found in any health food store in the REFRIGERATED section. If your daughter is eating solids, introduce her to yogurt with active cultures, which are probiotics. Be sure to buy yogurts from a health food store like Whole Foods. Most yogurts these days contain neurotoxins like Aspartame (nutrasweet) and Splenda. These two are detrimental to your baby's nervous system (and to everyone elses for that matter!!) This will help her regain the normal balance of flora within her gut. Also, to help with the current rash, I like California Baby's diaper cream. It contains essential oils that combat and soothe rashes like this. Lavender to help soothe and tea tree oil is a gentle yet effective killer of yeast. HOpe this helps!!

The very best diaper ointment I've found is Desitin Original (with 40% zinc oxide) Most other creams only have 11% or less zinc oxide. I tried Arbonne, Burt's Bees, A & D, Vaseline and several store brands, but none of them would work for a really bad rash. My son had a poopy diaper almost everytime we changed him when he was little. The Desitin Original was the only cream thick enough that would stay on & take away the redness. He had it really bad a few times where the skin was bright red & he would cry to be wiped. The rash went away within a couple days. I would put it on pretty thick & put on some baby powder so it wouldn't rub off on the diaper. You might try rinsing her off in the bath tub with warm water & a really mild soap while it's really bad. That will keep it cleaner & won't irritate the skin like wipes. It could also be related to a yeast infection which I do not have experience with, but hopefully the Desitin would help soothe her skin too.

Plain sugar free yogurt with LIVE ACTIVE CULTURES. Has to have the active cultures. Smear it all over her diaper area and let her air out on a towel as much as possible. Don't wipe it off.
Antibiotics can cause yeast infections by killing off all of the resident bacteria - thrush, and a nasty diaper rash in babies. The probiotics (good bacteria) in the yogurt compete with the yeast for food and put things back in normal balance.
After your baby is on solid foods, plain yogurt by mouth helps with the diarrhea and the diaper rash and can help prevent thrush during antibiotic treatment.

WOW< you got lots of responses....my daughter did the same thing even when she would teeth.....the lotrimin is a great suggestion and also keep on hand DR. SMITH'S diaper ointment. Buy it at walmart...white square box....around 7-8 dollars but is the BEST stuff I ever found. The rash/blisters are nearly gone after a days use. GREAT Stuff.
Hope that helps.

Are you sure it is diaper rash? It could be a yeast infection which is very common in women after taking an antibiotic.
OR - Are there blisters or anything that looks oozey? My daughter got a 'loaner' diaper from our lung Dr.'s office, once, when we locked our keys in our car. And within the hour she had what our Pedi called a CHEMICAL BURN from the diaper itself. It lasted for WEEKS! and was extremely painful for her and had very bad blisters. (We only use Earth's Best natural diapers)
Our Pedi had us stop using wipes, and use washcloths with plain water until it was gone. And, of course, we have never used any 'traditional' diapers ever since.
I don't think the regular diapers are so bad, it's just that our daughter was used to the others and it was a shock to her skin.
Good luck!

She may be allergic or sensitive to amoxicillan. Talk to your doctor about her diaper rashes. Allergic reactions aren't always necessarily hives. That's probably why the Aveeno isn't working. You may also want to try Aquafore, it is less irritable for them since it doesn't have any perfumes or alcohol. Good luck!

This is a SURE fire answer. GEt probiotics. I got one (sorry i can't remember the name). My pediatrician told me to give him accidophilous, and when i asked for it at the health food store, they immediately knew what it was for. The owner gave me a probtotic in powder form, or you can break open a capsule. Put some on the spoon (1 tablet) and pour amoxicillan over it as you administer. ALSO, use powder directly on babies bottom. It is not diaper rash it is a yeast infection that looks like rash. I couldn't even wipe my son's bottom when that happened to him. IT worked wonderfully. i passed it on to people to use on diaper rash and it worked! Works for adults on medicine if they develop yeast infection. Absolutely safe...it's what you find in yogurt but in stronger form!! And most yogurts don't have the live cultures of probiotics in them! go to a health food store.

Sounds more like a yeast infection than diaper rash. Call her pediatrician. They should prescribe something like Nystatin for it.

What Cindy C is correct. Get a cream that you would use to cure antifungal. my Doctor did this when my son had exactly what your little one has. Every time you change your baby's diaper put this cream on it and let it dry then follow it with vasaline to coat it. Here the deal with diaper rash creams they are think and hard to clean off when you change a diaper so the ras gets worse avoid the diaper rash creams and do what Cindy C has stated it works wonders. the vasaline is line a clear coat and will clean up easier and acts as a layer to prevent urine and poop from touching the skin. Good Luck.

for future reference, DR Smiths is awesome!!! ITs a little pricey (looks like it at least since the container is small) it lasts forever though and works miracles!! I was told to use it when my son came home from the hospital with his horrible NICU rash.
