Severe Diaper Rash - Murfreesboro,TN

My daughter got constant ear infections, so she was always taking antibiotics which would cause horrible diaper rash. Any way I got a prescription diaper rash med. I believe it's called Nysitan, something like that! Sorry I can't be more helpful.- A.

I remember I used Boric Acid Ointment on my daughter when she was small and that was all that worked. Also, you can get diaper rash cream that has 40% zinc in it (usually it is a cheap off brand) and it works great. Last time I found it was at the dollar tree for a dollar a tube.

There is a diaper rash cream but I can't remember the name of it...."Doctor ????" Anyway, it has 40% zinc in it and it worked really well. The pharmacist could probably help you at the drug store.

Corn Starch powder is good, when sprinkled on the bottom also.

I also have a friend whose grandbaby was in this same situation and she put a cloth diaper on her, without a rubber diaper on the outside, so the bottom could get "air" and she took her out in the sunshine naked for several minutes and let the sun shine on her bottom, and it did work.

My suggestion to you is to go to the pharmacy and get some Resinol. It is an OTC rash cream but you have to ask for it. Second, give her an oatmeal bath. Let her play in it for about 15 minutes. This should really help. My son, now 3 and my daughter as well 9 months old. Both had/have bad diaper rashes. This is the only thing that worked for me. I hope that this helps! Good luck.

You need to call her DR - is the meds really necessary. Tell them what it is doing and if its neccessary, can it be changed?

Dont wipe her with wipes. Take her straight to the bath and rinse with warm water, no wiping with cloth. She will not like the water but it will not irritate any more like a wipe or washcloth would. Diaper cream recommendation is calmoseptine. Unsure where to buy it but you could probably look it up at calmoseptineointment.com

Last resort - try letting her go bottomless for a while or go buy a few cloth diapers so they wont be so abrasive.

My son when he was a baby use to do the same, we would use everything on it and it wouldnt work. We started using vasoline and althleats feet medicine. That is what his doctor said to use when nothing else was working. I was concerned that it would hurt him, but the ped. told me it wouldnt hurt. I tried useing both of these, 1st put on the althlests foot cream then the vasoline and it started working within one day. I agree not to use any diaper wipes or anything with with perfume or soap in them cause they will increase irratation... And if any time possible during the day leave the diaper off your little one for a few min after every diaper change air will help it get better faster. Antibiotics will cause a sever yeast infection every time. Our doctor prescribed Nystat (sp), it worked great healed in a couple of day. I would get a med recommended by the doctor and let her air dry as much as possible. Also, as a preventive, I asked for the diaper rash perscription along with the antibiotic. I put the cream on their bottom when they start their medicine. I had no more problems.

I have found that what worked the best for my boys was to use A and D ointment or vaseline. It seems that they formed the best seal of protection from the moistness. Try either one.

Since I haven't seen the responses, this may be redundant, but it sounds like you need a prescription for Nystatin ointment. It will clear up the rash quickly. Your MD will call it in if you just call the office.

A little about me:
Mosty SAHM to 15 month old and 4 y.o.; 2 days/week RN.

Try mixing Malox & Desitin together. It will be "goopy" but will help dry it out. Also, let her "air out" for 15 to 20 minutes at a time several times a day. It will be messy but the air should help.

Try probiotics (sometimes just called Acidipholus) - in capsule or powder - you can break apart the capsules and apply externally and give internally as well, in milk or whatever. This will balance the system - works like a charm. (Pro-biotics are the large intestine 'flora' - normal bacteria that keep the system in check...opposite of anti-biotics that wipe the body clean of all bacteria - good and bad...necessary, sometimes!) Nutrition store or good grocery will have some. - Good luck!

As a nurse who's worked in family practice as well as long term care, I've found the miracle cure for diaper rash, skin breakdown or redness from heat....it's a medication you can get over the counter, but have to ask for it at most pharmacies. it's called 'CALMOSEPTINE' (cal-mo-sep-tine), & we use it TONS in the nursing home...it really protects the skin from the burning while it heals the irritated/raw/blistery skin. It's our dirty little secret, though---the Office of Long Term Care won't let us use it as a protocol medication, b/c THEY don't approve of it. However, the nurses I work for always have a supply on hand, & we can cure MOST diarrhea-sore bottoms or excess heat rashes in a weekend--48 hours you see a major difference! You don't have to slather it on, just a moderate amount will work.
SECOND---
if the medication's giving her any diarrhea, yogurt helps replenish the active bacteria, the "good bacteria" that naturally grows in the bowel. Most kids won't like just yogurt, but you could try the "go-gurt" or any of the yogurts marketed just for kid's tastes.

There is a new Desitan that is out that has a purple lid and
it comes in a tub. That's what my daughter had to get to overcome severe diaper rash on her son which was caused by
a reaction to a formula change. This desitan is thicker and
works really well. Put it on really thick and it'll protect
the skin from the urine. Hope this will help.
She first tried the Butt Paste, then regular Desitan in the tube, but a nurse told her about the new Desitan in a tub
with the purple lid.

Hey M., I am sure you have talked to her ped. What did they say? I use something called Mela Gel. It is from Melaleuca. I put some tea tree oil on my lil ones then put that on also. Maybe you should try letting her go without the diaper on after she is finished going poop in the am. Let her bottom get some air? Please let us know how she is doing!

the best treatment I had we my kids had bad diaper rash, especially when taking meds was Lanolin cream for (jock itch or athletes foot) just rub on the red blistered areas and within 24 hours my boys were healed, just keep on the outside area, do not insert or use inside on a little girl for my boys just rubbing on their red inflamed areas, I thought this was crazy when my dr told me, but he said he was caused (the diaper rash) from a viral germ, which is what jock itch and atheletes foot is, it never failed me and they slept like "babies" when the burning was relieved.

Happy Hiney works great. You must get from your doctor b/c the pharmacy has to compound the ointment. Ask your doctor.

When I breast fed my babies, they both had terrible diaper rash from the frequency of bowel movements at first. (One of their little hinies even bled. My doctor prescribed Silvadine cream. (I'm not sure if the spelling is correct.) It is actually a prescription cream for burns and you have to follow the directions and use sparingly, but it was a life saver. It was truly the only thing that helped and I even used it as they got older when they were on antibiotics. Ask your doctor. I hope this helps.

I've found that what works well for me is to give the child a bath (using mild soap or baby shampoo) to make *sure* you got everything off, and then use cloth diapers without covers. The important thing is to let the skin breathe. You can let her go without anything on (but you'll have to clean up messes). It might be worth it to have the clean-up to get her skin back to normal. (If she sits and plays a lot, or watches TV, then you could probably just put her on a towel over a plastic sheet.)

The other option is to call your doctor and tell him what's going on (including what all you've tried), and ask for a prescription for it. I used to work for a pharmacy, and we made stuff up all the time. It was kinda like Desitin with a kick--I think we used Nystatin (which is Rx only). Rules may have changed since then, so maybe just give your local pharmacy a call and see if they have anything like that.

Sounds like a yeast infection! I'd check with her ped dr first to be sure.

If there are blisters she may have gotten a yeast infection. My 1st daughter used to get them quite often when she got a diaper rash and the dr prescribed nystatin which began working very quickly. I also realized that her diaper had something to do with it. At the time I used the walmart white cloud. After I started buying luvs she didn't have near as many problems. Also make sure you don't use wipees, the alcohol in them burns on irritated skin. Use a baby washcloth with warm water and a little baby oil if it doesn't further irritate her skin. Aveno oatmeal baths can help quite a bit also.

My doctor reccomended using aquafor lotion as a diaper rash medication. Check the label it has lots of uses. It worked wonders on my son. We also instead of baby wipes used a squirt bottle on our sons bottom and just patted him dry. He eventually out grew it but it was rough for a while.

We went through the same thing with my son and daughter. At each diaper change, coat her bottom with vaseline, Desitin and then corn starch. It's alot to put on her, but it usually works. There is also a cream you can find in the drugstores called Aquafor and it's wonderful too. Just ask the pharmacist to locate it for you. Also, bathe her in a cornstarch bath. Let her soak in it as long as possible. DO NOT USE BABY WIPES! Use a soft wash cloth when you are cleaning her. Use just mild soap and water. Wipes have things in them that will burn when you're wiping her so do not use them-even the ones for Sensitive skin. Give this a try. Hope it helps you. I know it's frustrating to see your child like this. I've been through it twice.

My daughters have has similar situations. I have found that the best remedy is to mix corn starch and vaseline (generic workds just as well) together in a container and then spread on just like diaper rash cream. With her being blistered and raw already the first day you may want to put it on the diaper around where it will be hitting her as I am sure she is sore to the touch. The corn starch is a very inexpensive and natural healer. the vaseline will help to protect her skin. You can get both the corn starch and vaseline for under 5 dollars

I worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care and we had that problem all the time. My daughter has also had problems with terrible diaper rashes that I have had to take her to the doctor for. In the NICU, we used a solution of Carafate (which is a stomach coating medicine) mixed with aquafore (like vaseline). This stuff worked wonders! But, my doctor suggested an over the counter...milk of magnesia mixed with vaseline or aquafore. I found this to be a little tricky because milk of magnesia and vaseline don't mix very well (like mixing oil and water), but I fumbled with it and it workded!!! I know it's fustrating to see your baby in pain, but give milk of magnesia and vaseline a try and let me know!

I know how you feel, this has happened to my daughter a lot. First of all, you can give her warm baths and let her soak for as long as you can, it'll sooth it. Second try to let her stay w/o a diaper for as long as possible so she can air out. Third, this has really helped us this last time, and I called our ped. to ask if there was anything we could do. They told us to mix a little bit of Maalox with Aquaphor, it'll be hard to mix but mix it well and it doesn't take much Maalox. The Maalox sooths and the aquaphor protects. Then put that on her bottom when you change her diaper. Also try to make sure she's finished before you change her again, especially if you are doing it so often. I know it sounds bad but let her stay dirty just a few more minutes to make sure you don't have to put her through changing again. Another thing you can do is rinse your diaper wipes in water before you use them to get the alcohol out of them and make them less irritating. If you have very soft cloth wash cloths you can wet those and use them instead of diaper wipes. We had to do this until Alyssa went to daycare at 11 months because wipes will still tear her bottom up if they are used too often. We have to tell them to only use them when she's poopy not just wet. I really hope she gets better soon. You can also call your pediatrician to see if there is more you can do. After reading some of the other responses I also have to say i'd be calling the pediatrician to make sure it's not a yeast infection. Is it little white bumps? Regardless it probably needs to be checked out again. One other thing you can do is feed your baby yogurt at some time during the day. We usually do it after bathtime as a before bed snack. It helps with the yeast problems.

OK, M., this is going to sound strange but try plain ol' colgate toothpaste on the diaper rash. I do know it helps burns in the kitchen and it helps diaper rashes too. Takes the burn right out. Try it, what do you have to loose except the crying of your daughter!

Hi, I hated it when my child got rotovirus and his bottom got so red it blistered. I can not remember the name of what we used, but our pediatrician recommended it. You get it from the pharmacy, but you don't need a prescription. It comes in a small box with about 8-10 packets in it. The packets are filled with a powder that you mix with water and apply as a paste or mix with the bath water. It pulls the sting out of the rash and it will usually clear up within a day. It costs about $15 for the box. If I remember the name I will respond again. You can also go to the health food store and get a bottle of powder called Ultimate Probiotic Children's Formula, it contains acidophilus and you sprinkle it in juice or over food and it helps stop the diarrhea. After each diaper change slather her bottom in Desitin ORIGINAL not creamy and change her often. Good Luck!!

When Boudreaux's Butt Paste doesn't work:
Get your pharmacist to give ($10/box of 10 packs) you some powder /asidolphelous/ and put in her dairy products. Me and All three of my daughters get yeast infections anytime we are on an antibiotic, soooo, our Doctor prescribes Fluconazole EACH time we have to take an antibiotic. If you do not suspect it to be yeast, try A&D Ointment with the diaper rash creams at walmart...it is cheap, BUT it WORKS...buy lots of it and slather it on THICK! My nurse practitioner told me that the diaper rash ointments should be used to keep moisture locked in the skin so the skin can heal. ANOTHER cream or paste that is good is DR. SHEFFIELDS (sp?) found at DOLLAR GENERAL!!! Stock up. The thicker the paste/ointment, the better!

M., To be honest, if I were you, I would schedule an appointment with your pediatrician, for today if you can. The reason I suggest this is because blisters can represent staph infection, or worse, rupture, and become a prime area for staph infection. These can become abscesses and require hospitalization. I am not trying to scare you, but if it were my baby, I would have a physician evaluate it. The rash could also be a yeast infection, which is pretty common, but will not clear up without antifungal ointment.

I have the same problem with my 18mth old. When she gets diaper rash, she gets red with blisters and sometimes bleeds from it. I tried every type of ointment out there and what works best for her is baby powder with aloe in it. It seems to give her relief and usually the rash looks better by the end of the day and gone within 2 days. Im always careful when I put it on her and make sure she doesnt inhale any of the powder. I hope you find something that helps.

It sounds like the baby may have a yeast infection from the med it took . You might try a nurse hotline or go back to the Dr.

One thing that really helps is a baking soda bath. Use warm water and put enough of the baking soda in the water that is dissolves but the water feels silky. Just let your child sit and relax in the warm water...the baking soda pulls out impurities and will start the healing. You might be able to put the same solution in a water bottle/spray bottle so it can be used when changing diapers too. If needed, do a bath in the mornings and evening until the skin really heals. Also, let the skin dry if possible before covering it with the diaper. Good Luck, there is nothing worse then when you can' help your child.

Aquaphor...is the best stuff ever. It is kinda expensive but works great on Everything, even chapped lips.
But, I would like to tell you my daughter is 16 months also, and had been put on antibiotics also and teething with her molars really bad and we thought she had a bad diaper rash last week, sounds like we went through the same kinda things (blisters, burning, screaming) and ours turned out to be a yeast infection. I started putting Monistat cream on her and it started getting better immediatley. When she saw us get that tube out, she would lay down and open her legs. Three days of changing diapers every hour and Monistat and it is almost gone. I also tried cotton underwear with rubber pants. Hope that helps.

My daughter had the roto virus last year and had severe rash like you were talking about. huggies diaper rash cream worked really good and we also got something from her Dr. Ask your ped for something they can only give you, they usually will.

I would think the first thing to do is go back to the doctor. When my child had a severe rash the doctor diagnosed it as a yeast infection (not like a grown woman)and prescribed something. It cleared up quickly. Also, if you can see that she is going to have these episodes at a certain time (for 20 minutes after medication) you may want to think about rinsing her in the tub each time instead of rubbing with wipes and changing diapers. Blot her with a dry towel and let her air out a bit. Hope this helps - it is sad to think of our babies in pain!

I tried desitin also, but when I went to put it on it just seemed to make him scream louder. You have received a lot of good advice. When my 15 month old was on medication that gave him diarrhea I had the same problem with the really bad rash (he couldn't even sit in the bathtub it hurt him so bad). The doctor told me to get Lotrimin (found in the athlete's foot section of the drugstore). It's an antifungal cream. It worked within one day.

Another note, all the other traditional diaper rash ointments made him scream when I applied them.... the Lotrimin did not burn him, it actually seemed to soothe him when applied.

Put anti-fungal athlete's foot cream on it (name brand or generic). I swear by it. That's what the Dr. told me to do. My daughter is the same age- 16 mo. and she has the same problem when she's on antibiotics. It really does work- NOTHING else did.

You may want to try some Resinol. you can read more about it at www.resinol.com / I have used it with my four little boys with pretty good results. Ask the pharmacist to order Resinol through the pharmacy's regular wholesaler. Usually this routine request is filled daily and you can purchase Resinol at the pharmacy counter the next day. Hey there! I always used Milk of Magnesia on diaper rashes. It works very quickly. Just pour a little on her bottom at every diaper change. I know it sounds crazy, but it always worked for me.

Dr. Smith's diaper ointment has worked miracles for my daughter. We also put her in the tub alot when she has a rash. The water seems to help soothe her.

The best over the counter diaper cream that I use is Balmex. Also, when I worked at a pediatrician's office, the nurses there had a standing order for Nystatin. You should be able to call your pediatrician and have them call something in. You may want to make them aware of the situation just in case she is on the verge of dehydration or may have an allergy to the medication she is taking (especially if it is an antibiotic).

Saratoga ointment. It works wonders. I have 3 kids and I always used Saratoga ointment on all three of them while they were in diapers. You can find it at Babies R Us or any local pharmacy. Hope this helps.

Your probably going to think I'm crazy but I promise you it will work. Go to a Feed Store and get some Corona. It's a lambs wool ointment. It's really thick but very water resistant. My daughter would get diaper rash really bad and we would put it on and within a day or two it would be gone completely. Please try it, and let me know how it goes. D.

My daughter also suffered from severe diaper rashes when she was younger. She wasnt able to use any sort of medication labled "cream" because it would only make it worse. Even her Dr waas prescribing her a cream because she wasn't listening to me. Thats when I tried Dr. Smith's Rash Ointment. For me it worked wonders! I have never used anything else since. Its a little bit more expensive than a well known Brand but it was well worth it for me as i hope it will be for you. I just recently came down to TN from vermont and had to buy the Ointment for a long time now as my daughter is three. However you should be able to pick it up at Walgreens. If you can't find it. Search Dr.Smiths Rash Ointment on google and a link will come up that you can purchase it from. Walgreens.com is one place i know for sure you can get it. Best Wishes J.

Have your tried Boudreaux's butt paste?? it worked for my kids. but you need to apply a good bit. also you may need to call the DR to tell him that the medicine has caused real bad diaharea and causing her to blister on her bottom and it also could be a yeast infection which would need special cream. hope everything works out in the end.

I think someone already mentioned this one,, but corn starch was the ONLY thing that helped my daughter. I could tell a difference almost immediately with each diaper change. Unlike powder, it doesn't crust up into little balls. It's very smooth and you can just shake it on.. then when you change the next time it's virtually gone...

Also, anytime you can let him play around naked the air helps... and if he's like my daughter, he will love the freedom! haha

I have this problem with my youngest son when he is given a certain kind of medicine. It got so bad that it caused him to have a 3rd degree burn on his butt! and like you I was changing it as fast as I could! There is a cream that is rx that the dr can give you. It is called Silvadine (sp?). It is WONDERFUL! I keep some at my house for things like this.

Try some Resinol, you have to ask the pharmacist for it but it does not need a perscription, my pediatrician suggested it and it is the best diaper rash ointment I have ever used. It comes in a tub rather than a tube and lasts forever. I think mine lasted almost year for twins.

Here is the cure...my son went through something similiar. It sounds crazy, but it works. Buy some regular Mylanta and rub it on her little bottom. It works the same on her bottom as it does in you belly. It will protect her bottom from the acid in urine. I know it seems strange...my pediatrician told me to do this and at the time my son's bottom was bleeding because he was so raw. He healed up in less than a week. GOOD LUCK!!!

Call your doctor. We had this problem (The skin was so irritated that it was bleeding) and our doctor called in a prescription for a compound that the pharmacist has to mix up. It worked great for us.

I would check with the pediatrician, but i have 4 children and 2 grandchildren. I learned to use a little monistat, or generic brand cream a couple of times a day. It only took a couple of days to get them well. I hope this helps.

Leave her diaper off. DO not use wipes. They make the rash lots worse. Use a warm washcloth or just put her in the tub and rinse her off.

Try Dr. Smith diaper rash medicine and when you put the diaper rash medicine on also, put some vaseline on her bottom. The vaseline should help with keeping anything off her skin. It really helped when my son had a diaper rash from diahrea overnight, the next day it started to look better. I hope it works for your daughter. Also, if it doesn't get better in a few days I would take her to the Dr.

I've had the same issue with my son (now 2 yrs old). He had terrible diarrhea that resulted in a diaper rash so awful that it bled! Our pharmacist has an amazing remedy. It's cheap. It works. Get a tube of jock itch cream and a tube of zinc oxide. mix 2 parts zinc oxide to one part jock itch cream ( do it in a dish with a q-tip) spread on the affected area. Then you take PURE corn starch (get it in the baking aisle at the grocery) and sprinkle on top of the cream mixture. DO NOT use baby powder as it has fragrance that will irritate the skin. Put on the diaper. Do this at every diaper change. The mixture will get crusty, so use a warm, wet (water only - no soap) baby wash cloth or burp cloth to very gently clean the area before applying the mixture again. Make sure the area is VERY dry before you add the cream. At bath time, add about a half a box of baking soda to the bath. This will also help dry up the rash. This has worked for us many times!!

The best thing to do is to take her back to the doctor, get a prescription medication for her rash, and then ask your doctor to switch your daughter to a different medicine for whatever had made her sick.

For many illnesses, there are often more than one medication which could be prescribed. Chances are good that there is another medication she could take which would not give her diarrhea.

My son had a similar rash a few months back. Rashes like this are really common after antibiotics and during the diarreah/vomiting bugs that spread like wildfire. All of those diaper changes can wreak havoc on tender skin.

My son was on antibiotics 5 times in 6 months before his tubes were put in and he had MANY yeast infections. The hallmark of his yeast infections was beefy red skin that was just splitting open. Sometimes with blisters. Double check with your dr's nurse and describe the rash in detail.

It got so bad one time that when I would wipe my son's bottom and pull up his legs to put the diaper on, the blood would be running down his bottom to his back. As a previous poster suggested, the doc recommended baking soda baths and patting with a vinegar water solution, but both just made him scream. Maybe if you try these before the skin is broken down too far....

It seemed like Vaseline or Aquaphor sealed in the heat of the rash making him more uncomfortable. For my two kids, what worked for one didn't for the other. For dd, Desitin (applied liberally- like a half dollar amount) and time were the only things that made a difference. For ds, Triple Paste cleared his rash. I still use it occasionally to this day, and he's 2.

Also, remember that as long as you get the poop off, you don't need to wipe off ALL of the cream at each diaper change. The less you wipe, the better.

Certain brands of diapers DO make some kids break out.

Also, check your wipes- some of them actually contain ALCOHOL!!!!!!! Could you imagine????? I always -ALWAYS- keep a box of the sensitive type of wipes in the closet just for the times his bottom is irritated.

Finally, keep in mind that you want FRAGRANCE free when choosing a cream, especially since your little one is already in pain.

Both of my kids have always had diaper rash issues. I have always used Aquaphor (at the advice of my pediatrician years ago) and it is wonderful. I also tried Arbonne cream and a zillion other things and always go back to Aquaphor. Have you ever used it??

You need to talk to your doctor. Sometimes antibiotics will cause diahrrea and he/she might be able to change the medication to something that will not cause that.

But about the diaper rash. My 21-month-old has always had VERY sensitive skin and we have had a lot of issues with diaper rash. When it gets to the point where it's blistering, there is probably no over-the-counter diaper rash cream that is going to help much. See if your doctor will give her a prescription for something like Nystatin cream. It's usually used to treat yeast infections, but I've found that it's very effective for treating bad cases of diaper rash, too. I only use it for a day or two at a time when she gets really red or starts getting blisters and once it's cleared up, I go back to A & D ointment. It's amazing how quickly even two or three applications will start to make my daughter feel better!

Resinol is THE best booty medicine out there. My daughter had a HORRIBLE time because of meds she was taking causing the same issue. Resinol cured her WORST rash over night.

My daughter is 4 now, and I still use this on occasions, but when she was a baby a friend of mine recommended using....and yes, this sounds wierd but antifungal foot cream. I use the Walmart equate brand, this is used as a treatment for atheletes foot. The active ingredient is Clotrimazole USP 1%. This stuff works great and like I said I still use it on her is she has repeated episodes of runny stool. It clears up the rash in a day in worse case scenarios, in my experience. When she was an infant she had rashes where she had blisters and raw skin and this seemed to do the trick. It worked much faster than anything I ever got from the Dr and much cheaper. Hello M., we had the same thing happen with our son. Tried two single ingredient prescriptions, lots of over the counters... The compound mentioned by another mom below was (and still is) the only thing that worked for us. It's called Bailey's Balm. It is a mixture of 3 different products mixed by a pharmacist and does require a doctor's prescription. I was told that not every pharmacy will do it, but the two Walgreens in my area did. This isn't a 'daily' paste. It's used only when there is a visible rash until it clears completely, then you will go back to using your normal every day over-the-counter creams. Good Luck.

If you were given an antibiotic and your child is continuously having diarrhea, she may be very sensitive to the medication....you should let her doctor know.

For the rash...open to air is the best thing. This may be hard if she is still having lots of loose stools, but will help a lot. During this time, cloth diapers are the best without plastic pants. Also try using Aquaphor on the rash. It is a petrolatum based ointment that I have had a lot of success with.

And don't forget lots of hugs and kisses...I found this is useful too.

How come you haven't been back to the doctor to tell him this? Or even phone his Nurse? He is probably allergic to the prescription, so tell the doctor or the nurse. There are lots of other meds they can prescribe for the child. And if she still has the pain, don't put a diaper on her, let her air out her bottom. Put her in a place, where she can have a soft white sheet under her, that you can wash. Think about it? How would you like to be uncomfortable?

Bless her heart! It sounds like it may be yeast related. Give her yogurt and even pick up some powdered or liquid acidophilus from the health food store. You can call the Dr. and get some Nystatin cream, or something similar, or my doctor always had us just use some monistat cream for yeast infections on the area. Hope that helps!

I had the same problem with my second daughter on a few different medicines. One time it was so bad I thought I might have to take her to the hospital because we were out of town and her bottom was so raw it wouldn't stop bleeding and she was screaming she was in so much pain. I called my pediatrician and she said to stop giving her the medicine. She also recommended a cream to use on her bottom but I am sorry I don't remember the name now. (It was a few years ago). I would talk to the pediatrician and see if there is a milder medicine you can use, we were finally able to find some that didn't have the diareah in out dd. To help heal the rash I was told to let her go without a diaper as much as possible. We had an all carpet house so we spent lots of time in the kitchen or whenever she was in the highchair I took the diaper off. Hope this helps and I am sorry your daughter has to go through this. I feel your pain.

My son had a really bad diaper rash and his pediatrician recommended Aquaphor. It worked great!!!!

I used cornstarch on both of my boys, and it always looked better with every diaper change...plus you can just shake it on them and you don't have to touch them at all. Good luck, I know how it feels to have your baby in pain and you feel helpless.

My 19 month old son has problems with severe diaper rash at times. I have found that when it gets that bad, with little open blisters, I will use an antibacterial cream and put it on real thick. Then I sprinkle a bunch of corn starch to coat it. Just regular corn starch from my pantry. The corn starch helps the moisture from coming into contact with the skin. Once I get the blisters looking better, I will rotate my diaper rash meds...A & D, Balmex, Antibacterial cream, and even sometimes Bag Balm. Plus if I have to change many dirty pants within a short time frame, I always bathe him to clean his bottom real good instead of rubbing it with the wipes...Good luck and Bless her little heart! My daughter has the same problem when she was younger. She has to eat yogurt with live cultures, this will reduce the diahrea. Live cultures sounds gross I know but its in almost every yogurt just read the labels. They make a prescription diaper rash cream, you should be able to CALL your pediatrician and have them call it in for you. (They should not have to see her for that) Every time we get put on an antibotic I pick up yogurt and it really helps. Good luck!!!

I have the best cure for severe diaper rash. My son was born very premature and in and out of the hospital on medications that caused him to go to the bathroom alot like that and one time i gave him a juicey juice or something that he had an allergic reaction to and it done the same thing to him that taking medications does to people. It gets rid of the good yeast in your body. I SWEAR BY THIS. It will get rid of the blisters also and it not only works on infants it also works on those that are bed-ridden.

Use a warm cloth to clean their bottom and instead of using a diaper rash cream get LOTRIMIN FOR JOCK ITCH(yes that's right) It cost like $4-5.00 per tube but it is not thick so it goes on very easy and it does not burn them when applying, then keep corn starch on hand and sprinkle it in the diaper, because it absorbs the moisture and keeps baby's bottom dryer. Apply lotrimin to bottom and corn starch to diaper until it is cleared up. This was and still is to this day the best thing I've used for diaper rash or chaping from medication on babies or adults. My daughter used to get rashes a lot when she was on antibiotics and she would end up with a yeast infection. Try some yeast cream from the store (you might call your pediatrician first). Hope it helps!!

Pure cornstarch right out of the box can help sooth a burning bottom. Pat the cornstarch on alone or over what type of cream you have. My daughter stops crying instantly when I apply the cornstarch and within a day the redness is gone. Now any time I notice she even gets a little red I apply the cornstarch. It's better than the baby powder that has cornstarch in it.

Does your child drink juice? My sister little girl drank juice and it gave her diahera. She took her off the juice that she loved and changed her to water and kool-aid for a few day, until the rash cleared up and then tried it again. She now gives her the juice only in moderation. My son has very sensitive skin and gets rashes frequently. We found Resinol to be the best solution to the problem. It is not on the shelf at any store. You must ask for it at the pharmacy desk. It is no longer a prescription medicine. I buy it in bulk to use on any rashes and it can be used as an ointment for burns and cuts. It is the miracle cream for children, especially infants. Suggestion: Put it on before she goes to bed at night. You will be surprised how it keeps the rash away. It also clears up a rash within a day. I would not be caught without it now.

Possibly try giving her some yogurt....it won't help immediately; however, it may help neutralize some of the acidity of her poop & urine. My 2 year old likes the go-gurt kind...I put them in the freezer and she eats them like pop-ice/flavor-ice popsicles. Plus they feel good to her teeth (2 year molars). Check with your pharmacy about Happy Hiney & Nystatin-they are really good when used together.....baking soda baths are very soothing, too. Try no wipes and just wet cloths for a while. Check with the doctor to see if there is an alternative to the medicine....which I am sure you have already done. Sometimes it makes you wonder which is worse-the illness or the cure.

have you tried resinol? You purchase this from your pharmacy. It's not rx but they keep it behind the counter. I had a similar issue with my 2 yr old and this worked wonderful. apply the resinol - do not rub completely in. then apply a layer of zinc oxide cream - do not rub this in completely either, let this stay white on the resinol; this just helps add a little more protection for the skin. My son looked much much better the next morning.

Try to rinse her off with lukewarm water and nonirritating soap instead of usng wipes when you clean her. Then pat her dry and let her air dry a little before putting on another diaper. Of course, if you really wanted to, you could use cloth diapers until the rash heals. I tried every cream on my sons when they were younger and nothing worked better than slathering on the Desitin to the point there was just a paste of it on their bottoms after doing the above. Hopefully, once the medicine is stopped the diarrhea will as well.

Butt paste worked real well for me, though it sounds like you've tried most everything and have gotten a lot of great suggestions from the other posts. Try giving her bottom as much air time as possible, try cotton panties that are thicker in the middle so if she has an accident it's not all over the floor (or just regular cloth diapers). A baking soda bath or cornstarch should ease her discomfort and do that a couple of times per day.

When one of my kids gets diarrhea and it irritates their butt I will slather on Vaseline at every diaper change to help protect their skin. So when they use the bathroom again it doesn't further irritate it and most importantly it doesn't hurt them when they go.

my daughter had the same thing she would even get big sores that would bleed it was miserable she did not want to sit on her but because it hurt so bad and i finally found somthing that worked it is called triple paste it works i even use it on myself when i get a heat rash under my breast when i work out you can get it at walgreens or target

hi my daughter had a bad diaper rash few months back and the dr gave her vusion sp? and it did wonders cleared it right up...you can call the dr and see if they will call it in they usully will without seeing her and let her go around without a diaper on for a 30 mins or so at a time that helps too

I would double check with your pediatrician or his/her nurse just to make sure you're child doesn't have a yeast infection. In my experience these can be hard to clear up. You might also want to make sure she doesn't have a urinary tract infection if peeing is causing so much pain. It sounds like you're changing her diaper quickly which helps reduce the irritation. If you can let her go without a diaper some to allow air to get in that may help, too.

Our daycare has a recipe for a home remedy they call Happy Hiney - it's equal parts of Desitin, lotrimin (can use generic - it treats the yeast), and vaseline. Then add just enough Maalox to make it creamy but DO NOT use any Maalox with peppermint b/c that can cause it to burn, only regular Maalox. You can then store it in a Tupperware container. We put it on pretty thick when our little one gets a diaper rash and the rash is always gone the next day. Good luck!

I have a son with VERY sensitive skin and we have battled diaper rash like you wouldn't believe. I mean his would get to be so bad that they were bleeding, and like you I had tried EVERYTHING, even the super expensive stuff. This may sound strange, but the miracle cure I found was Crisco. Cheap and EXTREMELY effective. Why? Because think about it, what can get through Crisco? It's like a wonderful layer of protection, and because it is vegetable oil, it is soothing, too. You can always try the mixture of vasaline and cornstarch, which has been known to work for generations and I have even had pediatricians tell me to use it, and it did work, but not as effectively or as quickly as the Crisco. I promise, use it every single diaper change liberally for one day, and the very next day you'll see a difference. Sounds crazy to be greasing your kid up like a pig, I know, but hey... if it works! It's infinitely better than crying and miserable pain. Good Luck!

Could be a yeast infection. Call your pediatrician's office and describe the problem to the nurse. They may call in a prescription for it.

I am assuming that your daughter is on antibiotics. My son does the same thing when he takes certain ones. He would literally blister on his bottom and scream when you would change his diaper and have to wipe him clean. I put a mixture (about half and half) of hydrocortisone cream and neosporin. It took a couple of days, but it finally went away. This tip came from the pediatrician. Hope it works!!

I went through this with my son, My doctor recommended he eat lots of yogurt, it made the diarrhea go away. Hopefully that can help with the rash too. Yogurt will help, try it if she isn't lactose intolerant. Best of luck!

The best thing i have found for a severe diaper rash such as the one your describing, is to keep it as dry as possible first and foremost. The next thing i recommend is to go to walmart and get some beuxdrex (boodrow) butt paste. It works wonders. Also another thing i have used that works is to let the bottom get air to it as much as possible and to get some ordinary household cornstarch, brown it really well in a frying pan, let it completely cool and use it on the bottom everytime you change a diaper. Just as if it were baby powder. Let me know if any of my suggestions work.

Provided it isn't a yeast infection I like Gold Bond Baby Powder (NOT regular Gold Bond) it has to be the baby powder. I think WalMart carries it over near the pharmacy section. I like it b/c I don't have to wipe something on their bottom and make them scream! My son will actually ask for powder when his bottom is bothering him now.
I also liked Resinol.

I got a sample of Flanders Butt Cream from Walgreens. It is wonderful. I had the store manager order it for me. It was about 6 or 7 dollars but it is worth the money. Everytime we have had a diper rash, it clears it right up. Sometimes even the next day.

have you tried bag balm? i know that sounds gross, but i have a 2yr old and that is what my pediatrician has recommended since birth and we have had really good success. if you can't get it at walmart, try a farm store. it come in a pretty green square tin.

I sympathize for you because this happened to my son when I was pregnant with my daughter. The dr called in RX diaper rash cream as well as some over the counter medication called TRIPLE PASTE! The cream treats the rash, and the triple paste basically coats the behind so no more moisture can get to it. It is the best thing ever. My son's behind actually bled from the rash it was horrible. The diaper rash cream is called Nystatin. If you call most dr's will call it in for you. Also soak her in warm water. One last thing and this was not fun..if you can let her go with out a diaper for a while. Trust me this was not fun, but it helped just letting some air get to the spots. I am really sorry you are having to endure this..my son was about 23 months old and I thought I might have a nervous breakdown. GOOD LUCK and I hope you daughter gets well soon.

Have the doctor check to see if it is a yeast infection... they look like a bright red, raw diaper rash and hurt like hell... my son was prone to them when he had loose bowels. the only things that work for that are a prescription cream and powder. the other creams didn't do anything but hurt him. if the doctor says it is a yeast infection, use the cream and powder and put him in either a cloth diaper with no rubber pants or a simple pair of loose underwear. worked within a couple of days for my son. if you can't afford the dr visit, you can try vagisil... works the same way , and then dust with corn starch! good luck!

Hey, My favorite diaper rash cream is "A+D Gold Standard of Protection" it comes in ointment and a cream. I think you can find in health and beauty as well as the baby section at Wal-Mart. I would also use a lukewarm washcloths to wipe her bottom instead of baby wipes. When she is napping I would put a towel under her and let her air out! Putting a small baby wash cloth or a reg. one folded small over her front will help her from peeing everywhere. Also if its not too cold in the house go with out pants. The more layers we have over the diaper the less the diaper breathes. Hopes this helps and her bottom is better soon! Trying to get yogurt down her will help balance her out. If she wont eat yogurt try to make a smoothie. I take a little mik, vanilla yogurt and frozen yogurt icecream. You could also put some banana in there or her fav. fruit. Blend in the blender. Joseph thinks he has a treat when he gets a smoothie. He has no idea I'm really trying to get yogurt down him
Oh, one other thing I do. When my son is sick and I see the signs of diarha I lather that bottom with diaper rash cream before I even see signs of a rash. Diarha and rash seem to go hand in hand. Hope this helps in the future.

Sounds like she has a yest infection rash only thing i have found that worked on mine was to let em go without a diaper corse mine were little and wernt mobile have her lay infront of a fan air will help it to dry up take her to dr and get ointment for it is only other way ,for diarea put her on a bratt diet Bread rice tea toast those all help with diarea

I don't know it it has been suggested already or not, but I've used Burt's Bees Baby Bee's Diaper Rash ointment on my little boy and granted little boys don't tend to get diaper rashes as bad but it helped alot. I tried desitin and Johnson and Johnson and the sprays and the one that helped the most was of course the most expensive but worth it. Even though he is out of the diaper rash stage keep it around for sunburn emergencies too.

My daughter started having pretty bad diaper rash.. Her pedi. gave us a prescription for a ointment called Bailey's balm. I would wash her bottom off in the sink at every diaper change with luke warm water, then let her just play in her room for a while with no diaper on, then apply the balm when I knew she was very dry. That is the only thing that worked for us..

I don't know if you have found a remedy yet, but I wanted to let you know that I had a similar experience when my daughter was in diapers. I am an Arbonne consultant now and wish I had the products then, but I did not. I am sorry that it did not work for you. I do suggest trying the Arbonne ABC baby wash and ABC oil. When I had this problem though, I contacted a pharmacist and they gave me a diaper rash cream that they made in the pharmacy (similar to the Boudreaux Butt paste). We also let her go without a diaper and lay with a heat lamp over her. This seemed to work! Avoid using baby wipes, and use warm wash cloths. Hope this helps!

I see that you already have a ton of good answers, but I like to put in my two cents, lol. My second daughter had diaper rash really bad, from her bowel movements. She would just go every time you wiped her or anything, it was ridiculous, and the rash would blister and bleed. It was bad. We used alot of the aveeno oatmeal products and Boudreaux's butt paste. The doctor recommended A&D but it didn't work as well for us. Nothing ever got rid of it completely until she stopped pooping as much, which wasn't until she was 6 weeks old.
We also kept her diaper off as much as possible.

Have you tried to put some corn starch on her. That has worked for me when my boys where little . My youngest would get red with blister's as well and they would open up and I would just use corn starch on his bottom and with in a couple of days he would be healed

If this finds you still struggling with diaper rashes and blisters, I offer my recommendation that I had to use on my daughter, she had the same problems you are listing! I tried everything, just as you have, even all the prescription things too, but what I found worked the best for my daughter was the Aveeno Oatmeal bath stuff, lotion, and cream! It did not burn her as badly as all the others had, and I saw improvements overnight in her private regions! Also another thing I used too is petroluem jelly! Yes, that's right, I would apply it after I put on the cream after I let her soak her bottom in a nice warm bath with the oatmeal in it for 20 to 30 minutes.....the petroluem jelly works as a shield, the chemicals in the urine and fecal matter did not stick to her skin helping it clear up! I also used wet towels or paper towels rather than wipes as often as I could, even when she didn't have a rash, I also found doing this lowered the number of rashes she would get too! I pray that you have found a cure that helped your daughter! If my advice helps, I am glad to have been of assistance! God Bless!

My baby girl got a bad diaper rash after getting her chicken pox vaccine. It was awful! Like you I tried everything I could think of. A friend of mine suggested letting her go without a diaper or at least in a pair of cotton training pants without the plastic cover. Was it a little messy? Yes! Did it work? It did and in only ONE day the rash was so much better. I hope this helps you.

I would call her doctor and let them know what is going on with your child. I f all the things you have tried havent helped....then maybe she needs a differant medicine. This one may be too strong for her.

Mix maalox with aquaphore! I keep a tub mixed up at all times! It will cure the worst diaper rash over night!!!! Sounds crazy I know but it will work!!! Also try cloth diapers until the blisters are gone. That papery feeling of diapers can be very uncomfortable on raw skin! Let her run around the house in a t-shirt and no bottoms too. Yes there will be a few messes but the "air time" will promote healing and dry it up.

I use phisoderm baby bath. You have to ask the pharmacist for it behind counter at walmart. Everytime child has a bad diaper dip them in a phisoderm bath and gently rinse off.

When my oldest was little, her doctor recommended ILEX which you may have to ask your pharmacist to order. It does not require a prescription but you may have to request it since I have never seen it out on the shelves. ILEX is a thick paste in a tube and you spread it very thickly. When your child has a wet or dirty diaper, you will just lightly wipe the area covered with ILEX - enough to get it clean - but the ILEX should still remain - it is so thick that it literally has to be peeled off - but it sure does the trick in protecting their skin.

Your child more than likely has a secondary yeast or bacterial infection. You will need to call your doctor for an antibiotic (ex. Bactroban) or use an OTC antifungal like clotrimazole (Lotrimin).

Generally if a bad diaper rash develops after a child has been on antibiotics it is a yeast infection-just the same as if a female is on a strong antibiotic and develops one-except the child gets it all over the diaper area. vagisil cream works but you can also get a prescription from the doctor. It usually starts as small, extremely red spots or blisters and then progresses to the point where the skin may peel or slough off. the other main thing is to keep the area as dry as possible, but without treatment (antifungals) it will not get better on its own.
