HI have a question/inquiry for anyone that could help me. I want to go back to school and get my certification or degree in medical billing/Medical transcriptionist. I job that I have read that I could do from home and it is a growing industry. Does anyone have any experience in this or can offer some direction? All of your help and assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I strongly urge you to get in touch with actual companies that hire in this feild to make sure that there are in fact jobs. To be honest I have a feeling that there are not. So make a list of all the companies that you would apply to. Then call their HR departments and ask them what their requirements are and their hiring outlooks. Just say that you are considering a career and would like some advice. And also try to speak with a couple people who are actually doing this to get their thoughts.

I don't know about this field specifically, but I'm in NJ. I would check the area community colleges. My best friend got a 2 year degree that qualified her to work at a different medical job. I had another friend who did medical billing without specific training (she had some college education in another subject area).

Please do a search on this here. In the past few weeks I've seen numerous people asking about this - and it seems like the answers say that this is *not* a growing field, as more work is being sent to foreign countries or done by technology, not people. So please do a search - there's been a lot of good advice provided by other people that might help you make your decision.

transcription is a shrinking field. I personally would do a Executive Office Administration. I'm going to school for it and even though it's a job I could have done with out the degree, I learned a ton about different programs and I am taking a medical terminology class so i could go work for medical office.

Hi J.,

Well, more power to you! I was a medical transcriptionist for years and found it very fulfilling work. Of course, your spelling, grammar and terminology should be impeccable. (Spell check won't help you here ;)
If you enjoy working with numbers, then billing is probably easier. I worked in all the specialties, even nuclear medicine, and the good thing is they have medical dictionaries to help! One drawback is the dictation, I found. Some doctors speak so quickly or are otherwise careless in their dictation, you have to be careful you get it right. But it's a great career for working from home.
Good luck to you!
